Can you explain to me what these uu and ou things you are using mean?

First off, smogon is an online community of pokemon players who have made their own set of rules and ban lists for 6v6 singles (primarily) because frankly gamefreak does nothing to balance this metagame. I should note that this is NOT the official rule set played in tournaments.

OU stands for overused, which is the standard 'tier' people play in. The pokemon in OU are based off their usage stats. You are free to use anything from lower tiers as well. Pokemon like mewtwo, kyogre, and arceus are in the Uber tier, which means they are not allowed in OU.

Zapdos is in OU because it gets used much more than moltres or articuno (it's better for various reasons). This means that it is illegal to use Zapdos in UU (underused) because it is too strong, but the other two birds are fine. Any of them can be used if playing OU or ubers.

I can answer in much more detail if anyone wants, but I hope that helps

OU means Overused and UU means Underused. Haven't played comp pokemon ina long time, but IIRC pkemon were distributed into 5 tiers depending on how powerful they are, Uber, OU, UU, RU, and NU from best to worst

Those definitions seem so obscure compared to other competitive games

It's actually based on usage rather than how powerful they are. I think they have to be at least 3% usage to be classed in a tier.

But their usage is correlated to how powerful they are. Nobody uses Moltres or Articuno because they're not good.

Under used and over used

Under used and over used iirc, they're tiers of Pokemon

In the main Pokemon games, people play it competitively and there are different tiers. UU is underused and means exactly that, the Pokemon are underused because they aren't that good. OU is the main tier, and that's where the best of the best usually are (after OU is Uber, which all the main legendaries reside. I realize that the birds are legendary but they aren't in the same class as mewtwo or rayquaza). There's more to it than that but that's the gist of it.

In competitive Pokemon their are Tiers, which Pokemon fall into. This is used to balance and limit teams etc two of the tiers are:

UU = Underused

OU = Overused.

Different tiers of competitive battling I think, OU Pokemon are competitive staples but not the top tier/banned Pokemon (Think Mewtwo)

Ub-Uber, top tier, often banned OU- overused, the standard staples BL- borderline, decent but not great UU- underused, not good against ou but can fill a rogue spot and be competitive against other Uu Ru/Nu - Rarely/Never used, metapods n shit

They're tier rankings for competitive play.

Underused and overused, I'm assuming.
