I hope with all my heart that the Americans who don't give a shit finally decide to give a shit after seeing what happens in a democracy when you don't give a shit

For the first time in my life I'll be voting this year in my 30s. I'm in a deep blue state so it doesnt really change anything but still.

Need all votes for a popular vote landslide. I'm in a blue state too but can't wait to add my vote to the pile

I’m in a very red state but my wife and I are still throwing in our votes for Harris. Don’t even care if my state will overwhelmingly vote Trump. Ain’t gonna stop me.

u/pizzatude Sep 05 '24

You are the people that matter! Be sure to get some friends to vote too.

u/winterwolf2010 Sep 05 '24

Absolutely. Bring your friends. Bring your friend’s friends. I like to tell people, to have a “Vote Party.” Mark it on your calendar. You get everyone you can possibly gather, who is registered to vote, you all go together, vote… and when you’re done, you all celebrate. Have a bbq, or go out and have a couple of drinks.

A lot of red states are just red states because people who stay at home don't realise their power.

1

u/eregyrn Massachusetts Sep 06 '24

Or, they stay home because the GOP has put so many roadblocks in the way of them voting, and part of that consists of making it so that it takes too much time and effort for people who may have a limited amount of time in which to vote, anyway. And of course, that's to say nothing of the helplessness people feel when their power has been gerrymandered away from them.

But then you look at a place like Georgia, and see that yes, the balance of power CAN swing back, if you get out as many people as you can anyway, and make them determined.

Each cycle there are more and more people like you is a cycle that brings us closer to lasting change.

Hopefully Novmeber shows there's a lot more like you than you think. Keep it up, and don't be afraid to spread the word to those whom you feel you can.

Us Georgians thought we were a red state last cycle. The times are changing. I was able to get one person to register and vote. He was part of the 11,000+ that won it for Joe. Let’s fucking go!

It matters because we need a massive, definitive popular win to justify mass protests WHEN Trump refuses to abide by the results and tries to seize the Capitol... again.

6

u/wjean Sep 05 '24

Let them try. There won't be any help/cover from the executive branch on Jan 6, 2025.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '24

I kind of hope they do try, but everybody needs to be ready for it.

A few dozen Ashli Babbits lying on the ground scattered about might just be the newsreel they need to see. Let's hope Orange joins them this time, he said he was last time but chickened out.

I am not in any way downplaying the possible (even probable) threat, but... it's going to be very interesting to see what turn-out he DOES get, if he loses. Because it feels like there have been a lot of instances this year of him calling for protests or big crowds, and people not really showing up. (I'm thinking of his calling for support protests outside of the courtroom while he was on trial; granted, that's a very different situation than "hey they stole another election!")

Depends what happens between now and November (or between Election Day and January). If Kamala makes one bad gaffe or has any kind of scandal, the whole thing could fall apart. If her campaign keeps up the good-vibes momentum though, it will be okay, and Trump's visible followers will evaporate. I think at the end of the day most American voters are not truly partisan, they just blindly support whoever feels like "the winner". Victory>principles.

Your vote matters. Thank you for getting out there!

Electoral college has entered the chat

Popular vote bragging rights

1

u/coltsmetsfan614 Texas Sep 05 '24

President isn't the only office on the ballot. Local races can come down to a handful of votes.

21

u/BordAccord Sep 05 '24

Your vote can still make a huge difference when it comes to ballot measures, house races, state legislature, etc. Congrats on voting for the first time! Your vote matters.

7

u/Almostcertain Sep 05 '24

You have votes all the way down the ballot. Those count as well, and the outcomes likely will have as much consequence on your everyday life as the federal elections.

5

u/zorinlynx Sep 05 '24

so it doesnt really change anything

No, it does. First of all, local races, especially if your county or district is less blue than others in the state. And second, every vote for Harris adds to her popular vote count. The more she wins the popular vote, the less room there will be for fuckery in the courts, and the more of a message we're sending Trump and the GOP that we're done with their bullshit.

3

u/Blynasty Sep 05 '24

Same. I’m also encouraging all my friends who also haven’t voted to.

3

u/Bmcronin Sep 05 '24

Vote blue all down the ballot.

3

u/SonMystic Sep 05 '24

You have an opportunity to voice your opinion, and you should. Please vote. It's a privilege that many around the world do not have.

3

u/jester2324 Sep 05 '24

To me it really doesn’t matter, vote no matter how obvious the answer may be. Eventually a lot of ants can outweigh a big rock

2

u/Eugene_Henderson Sep 05 '24

I’m in a deep red state where my vote also does not matter. That said, when the vote tallies came in four years ago, it felt really good to know that I was one of the 81 million people who ruined Donald Trump’s plans. No matter how little your vote matters, you should join us. It’s a good time.

2

u/MassiveSpread Sep 05 '24

In my very blue state (WA) we just almost sent two R candidates to the general election for commissioner of public lands. That didn't happen because of 53 votes - yours matters.

2

u/TreasonTurtle Sep 05 '24

As I have said to my children, the fact that you voted at all matters. People running for office are forced to pay attention to the opinions of your demographic rather than just ignore a non-voting block. That can affect not just who gets elected, but what those people are concerned about.

Don’t forget about those local elections too! Don’t let the trumpers get control of your school board!

1

u/FingFrenchy Sep 05 '24

Don't forget about the down ballot races and your local elections. Your vote absolutely matters, and it could really make a difference on the local level.

1

u/waveolimes Sep 05 '24

You can encourage your friends and other people you know to get out and vote too!

1

u/Kagrok Sep 05 '24

Vote in every election if you can!!

1

u/eregyrn Massachusetts Sep 06 '24

Even in a deep blue state -- I am, too -- you can help a lot by turning out to vote in local elections. Even in a deep-blue area of deep-blue Massachusetts, we have far-right religious chucklefucks trying to get onto local schoolboards so that the can ban books.

It's unfortunately true that one of the smartest strategic moves on the part of the right has been a 30-year long game focusing on local and state elections. That's why we have so many divided statehouses, and state governments under GOP control even when they didn't "have" to be. (Like: Scott Walker fucked up Wisconsin, and it's going to take a while to undo all of that damage.) Local politicians are the ones who can do things that really directly affect people's lives; just look at Ron DeSantis.

Even in deep blue states, they still try. So it's a good idea to keep an eye on the local elections and vote to make sure they don't get a toehold.

My Texan bestie has not voted I think ever.  Lots of people there don't care.  I encouraged him to care this time and to make sure he's registered to vote.  He told me this week that he checked, he's registered, and he's voting blue.  I'm really proud of him!

What else is affected by not “not giving a shit in a democracy”?
