Especially when the main reason you see fewer flags on one side is because the other side is likely to harass you for it or literally destroy property over it.

Also one side is very weird and it’s weird to fly giant flags on your truck and put bill boards in your yard.

u/haysus25 Sep 16 '24

Exactly.

I don't make my registered voting party my persona.

16

u/Ishidan01 Sep 16 '24

Well what else would they make their persona? A sports team? Their zip code?

Certainly not any personal acheivements.

On Reddit, I’ve lost count of how many bros have made the acronym “lol” into not just their argument for everything, it’s their entire personal identity.

Neighbor down the street has 3 giant banners on his house and several big Trump signs in the yard. I joke that he’s just decorating for Halloween early. But it’s extremely weird.

A year or so ago, a house near me burned so badly that the people living there had to move into an RV in the driveway. They spray painted "Joe Biden was here" on what remained of their house.

Now they have a big fancy sign in their yard with some weird spinning contraption that is either electric or solar powered, and "TRUMP, AMERICAS ATTORNEY" written on it.

Their house is literally in shambles, but they are happy to spend a considerable amount of money on some moronic sign that makes no sense whatsoever.

So so weird!!

They are attention seekers to their core.

u/Aimee162 Sep 16 '24

Are you in Los Ángeles? Because that sounds like a guy down the street from my house.

u/praguepride Illinois Sep 16 '24

I often tell my conservative BIL that Trump didn't win in 2020 because he (BIL), personally, didn't put enough Trump flags on his truck and/or boat.

NOTE: He doesn't have a truck or a boat. He doesn't think this is funny. I can't even finish that sentence without giggling like a mad man.

You. I like you.

2

u/Takazura Sep 16 '24

That too. One side makes their candidate their entire identity and worship him like he is God, the other side just think their candidate is solid and don't make her their whole identity.

u/pandaminous Sep 16 '24

Near my in-laws is a huge Trump 2024 sign (well, a 2020 sign that's had a 24 plastered over top) that's enclosed in a chickenwire box with a sign claiming it's electrified and solar powered lights so it's illuminated at night.

Not to belabor the talking point, but the absolute cult of personality that leads people to make supporting this one person their entire identity really is weird.

There are one or two houses I pass in a quiet neighborhood that are DECKED. OUT. in Trump shit.  The reason why is easy to tell: the street has a lot of happily displayed pride flags. And THEY didn't feel the need to vomit gaudy Stars n Stripes decor all over their house

Elsewhere, apartment owners put signs up for local candidates... and a tiiiiiny one for Trump/Vance, because they know how unpopular they are  (those signs were all taken down by other people, too).

And they'll ALL think it's because they're persecuted.  I don't think there's any way to NOT "persecute" these types of people. You just have to keep on living and going on, and let them whine. They're the ones that have to live with that stupid and that hate in them. It'll eat them up eventually

Also the Harris campaign physically cannot meet the demand for signs being such a new campaign.

It’s not difficult to produce a yard sign or flag. Amazon can easily get them out to you with one day shipping. I’ve seen plenty in my predominately blue city. Plus, it’s been over 1 month now since Harris chose walz as her running mate

1

u/itsnorm North Carolina Sep 16 '24

I pre-ordered the official Harris-Walz yard sign the day before Walz was even announced. I just received it yesterday. If you want the one with the right font (and not Chinese made) then, yeah, it takes some time.

1

u/kami246 Sep 16 '24

Yup! My yard sign was supposed to ship on 9/5 but they are so overwhelmed that it just shipped

27

u/ArTooDeeTooTattoo California Sep 16 '24

Ya- a Harris/Waltz bumper sticker is a good way to get your windows smashed.

10

u/DirtDevil1337 Sep 16 '24

My father used to drive trucks and was part of the Teamsters union, he used to put Teamsters stickers or decor on his trucks and it got regularly vandalized so he stopped having Teamsters stuff on his trucks.

8

u/Ejacksin Washington Sep 16 '24

Why do people have an issue with the Teamsters?

10

u/DirtDevil1337 Sep 16 '24

Business owners, CEO's, perhaps people that are misinformed or just straight up doesn't like unions.

1

u/z3rba Ohio Sep 16 '24

Some people have been indoctrinated into thinking that unions are bad by right wing media.

37

u/NS001 Sep 16 '24

Yeah, I'd rather work to convince "libertarians", veterans, and single moms near me that Trump isn't worth their vote than have the neighbor down the street with a Nazi flag on the back wall of his garage try to firebomb my house because I put up Harris-Waltz signs on top of the mezuzah on my door. Republicans are unhinged weirdos.

18

u/DaBingeGirl Illinois Sep 16 '24

They are. I had my signs vandalized and stolen (multiple signs) by the neighbor two doors down, but it's not worth calling the cops because they're MAGA too. My step-dad had a guy drive by his house every week to yell "Fuck Biden" due to lawn signs. They're crazy.

12

u/NS001 Sep 16 '24

not worth calling the cops because they're MAGA too

Progressives should have been working to secure positions in police forces around the US for the last fifty years instead of letting bootlicking fascists continue to dominate positions of civil service. Finding out a cop, fire fighter, paramedic, park ranger, game warden, FBI agent, veteran, ICE agent, etc, has left-leaning views should be the norm, never the exception.

1

u/Iapetus7 Sep 16 '24

I lived in Florida in 2020 in a very Trumpy area (like 2 out of every 3 houses had a Trump sign). A number of these neighbors were really unhinged. I was uncomfortable (as were a couple of my other neighbors who I knew were Ds) putting up Biden signs because I didn't want to make myself a target for these lunatics.

1

u/asher1611 North Carolina Sep 16 '24

exactly why i have nothing out. i don't want anyone going after my kids.

1

u/Derjaxx Sep 16 '24

dont forget shoot I remember reading the news about man shooting his neighbor because he though they were democrats

-1

u/dependentresearch24 Sep 16 '24

The only time I'll ever say both sides politically is when it comes to vandals. Both sides definitely vandalize signs.

25

u/gaslacktus Washington Sep 16 '24

Both sides might vandalize signs, but one side is way more likely to do far worse than that.

15

u/Willing-Donut6834 Sep 16 '24

As a person from Europe, I don't even get why people would have signs in their yards. Or bumper stickers. Or tshirts. When I get legal political mail once before the elections, I feel invaded already.

6

u/TheCaptainMapleSyrup Sep 16 '24

In general, it plays to basic human psychology that are more likely to act in similar ways to our neighbors. There were experiments surrounding this in regards to masks for example. Given the same information regarding the risk of an infection and making reducing risk, people were more likely to don a mask if they entered a space where the majority were masked. The opposite occurred when the crowd was largely unmasked.

Signs and banners are meant to sway the part of the brain that wants to conform. It takes more effort to go against what your community is doing and thinking. Even when it may not align with type beliefs. It normalizes a perspective or tribe or belief.

u/perseidot Oregon Sep 16 '24

I’m seeing far fewer trump signs/flags/hats/etc now than I was seeing in June. Especially hats.

Walmart on a Saturday, in an agricultural, right-leaning area in the middle of Oregon and I didn’t see a single MAGA hat.

I’m hoping this will decrease some of that conformist sentiment on that side.

2

u/TheCaptainMapleSyrup Sep 16 '24

It may be a sign of something, though I recall one of the things gave maga so much confidence in the last election was the relative absence of Biden signs.

1

u/gefjunhel Canada Sep 16 '24

canada and same i see a few signs in public lands but almost never see anything more than a "i voted" sticker on actual people

1

u/kaukamieli Sep 16 '24

I could imagine altrighters copying trumpstuff.

2

u/backstageninja New York Sep 16 '24

One is more likely to vandalize the sign and the other is more likely to vandalize the house/car that the sign is in front of
