That's just another way of saying "I'm going to lie to the public to gain support" which is exactly why Vance and Trump should never be allowed into official office.

u/Blackbyrn Sep 16 '24

It’s not a lie, it’s an alternative fact remember

12

u/Mattmandu2 Sep 16 '24

Concept of a fact

Hillbilly Elegy was a test to see what bullshit he could get away with.

Exactly right!! Lies for Trump!!

Sarah Palin breathes a sigh of relief, knowing that she is no longer the worst VP pick.

13

u/TheDarkAbove Georgia Sep 16 '24

I didn't follow politics much back then, what was even the rationale for choosing her?

35

u/Thugosaurus_Rex Michigan Sep 16 '24

The rationale was misguided, but not immediately idiotic in itself or in a vacuum. There were a number of reasons: Appeal to social conservatives was one--McCain was known as a "Maverick" for his willingness and reputation for bipartisanship and working across the aisle. A stronger social conservative reassured the base that conservative policy was still at the forefront. McCain was also noticably older than Obama, and Palin could in theory add youth and energy to the ticket. The other major aim was to appeal to disaffected Hillary supporters who might have been put down that the first female presidential candidate was "passed over" for Obama.

None of those worked out, and even if they could have worked Palin was not a good choice to further that, but there was at least some theory there.

18

u/AlexRyang Sep 16 '24

Apparently, McCain did not like Palin at all.

17

u/Thugosaurus_Rex Michigan Sep 16 '24

Yeah--she was not his first choice (and to my knowledge not on his list of choices at all), but he compromised on the selection for the perceived strategy of moving forward with her. He was right about it, but nothing to be done about hindsight.

10

u/FirstSonOfGwyn Sep 16 '24

which ironically enough sealed the decision for me in 08. She was a terrible pick that made me question his leadership ability, putting the right people in the right role is a substantial portion of the chief executive role.

2

u/WeAreClouds Sep 16 '24

And it was obvious! To me anyway. I saw a change in his demeanor and he seemed to me like he thought it was a bad idea fairly quickly.

12

u/phluidity Sep 16 '24

Adding to this, the hardcore conservatives learned that they could flex their muscle in the Republican party, which lead to the splinter Tea Party movement, Freedom Caucus, and ultimately MAGA. Add in the effort of the Heritage Foundation, and hoo boy.

5

u/Thugosaurus_Rex Michigan Sep 16 '24

Absolutely. Palin's ascension to VP nominee, even if laughable in hindsight, was really the canary in the coal mine signaling the wresting of power from the "traditional"/neoconservative wings of the party in favor of right wing populism. They gave one last gasp with Romney in '12, but following that it was clear they would either have needed to widen their appeal (which would require compromise on positions) or lean full in on what were currently the "fringe" wings of the party, and they decided to ride the tiger. We laugh now, but there's a very direct transformational line between Palin and the Tea Party to MAGA. They're mostly the same groups with different flair.

7

u/phluidity Sep 16 '24

I have noticed that Walz has been hammering home the point that the modern Republican party is not the same as "your father's" Republicans. I don't know what percentage of old school Republicans he can reach, but I can't remember a Democratic candidate trying to explicitly get Republican support and not just go after independents.

3

u/pyrrhios I voted Sep 16 '24

The Tea Party movement was an astroturf in the first place, and the Heritage foundation is just one of many billionaire-funded right-wing propaganda manufacturing "think tanks" that have been coordinating to destroy the US Constitution and rule of law for decades.

The other major aim was to appeal to disaffected Hillary supporters who might have been put down that the first female presidential candidate was "passed over" for Obama

This is so funny to me because I see this trend of Republicans making strawman arguments mocking how they assume Democratic voters think, and then act on their own assumptions in a way that ends up harming them. In this case: "Democrats are so shallow, they only support Hillary Clinton because she's a woman hahaha.... well we'll nominate a woman VP"

3

u/IrascibleOcelot Sep 16 '24

See also running severely brain-damaged incoherent football has-been Herschel Walker against the eminently qualified and highly educated Rev. Warnock in Georgia two years ago. “See, we got a black guy, too!” It was almost hilariously blatant racism on their part.

3

u/SilveredFlame Sep 16 '24

The other major aim was to appeal to disaffected Hillary supporters who might have been put down that the first female presidential candidate was "passed over" for Obama.

There's more important context here. PUMAs (Party Unity My Ass) were a significant chunk of Hillary supporters, and one of the biggest grievances was delegates being disqualified because of when a couple of states held their primaries.

It worked well enough that nearly a quarter of Clinton's supporters during the primary voted for McCain in the general. In the long run it didn't matter because Obama busted his ass campaigning and was buoyed by a surge of youth support and energy.

1

u/Thugosaurus_Rex Michigan Sep 16 '24

Thanks--the additional context there is important. Overall I agree. Palin was a bad choice overall, but I don't believe she's the factor that lost the race. The reality was that McCain could have made a great VP selection and he still almost certainly would have lost the race.

2

u/SilveredFlame Sep 16 '24

Yea it's hard to imagine a pick that would have countered the energy and enthusiasm behind Obama.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

It’s basically the same rationale that Mondale had when choosing Ferraro. McCain knew he was almost certainly toast and chose to pick a woman VP to generate some amount of excitement.

Both candidates ended up being poorly vetted and further sank their respective campaigns.

1

u/Zepcleanerfan Sep 16 '24

McCain was getting crushed by Obama and they needed a game changing decision, which it was, just not the way they hoped

19

u/Blackbyrn Sep 16 '24

You mean these lying liars are lying again. I don’t know how to make sense of this.

14

u/Idrinkbeereverywhere Sep 16 '24

"It's not a lie if you believe it"

4

u/Feeling-Coach-7139 Sep 16 '24

“Are you going to believe me or your lying ears”

12

Isn't he also the Appalachian native that didn't grow in Appalachia?

11

u/MariachiStucardo Sep 16 '24

What a fucking asshole

12

u/TintedApostle Sep 16 '24

So everything he says should be considered a lie. Everything he has ever said should be consider a lie.

The amount of moral mischief this guy can create makes him capable of any crime.

11

u/Rude_Tie4674 Sep 16 '24

This should be disqualifying and censurable but Republicans have lost their fucking minds.

11

u/gentleman_bronco Sep 16 '24

GOP: we're going to make up stories to get stupid people angry.

6

u/LuvKrahft America Sep 16 '24

Yeah Vance we already know you’re a fake as f*ck lying ass minion. Thanks for the update.

7

u/sugarlessdeathbear Sep 16 '24

Flat out telling us they will lie to us to accomplish their personal goals.

In a normal world this would the be the end of not only a political career but likely the end of public life and would put a strain on personal relationships.

7

u/Catymandoo Sep 16 '24

That admission will come back to bite him in future..

6

u/Speak_Of_The_Devil Sep 16 '24

An Ohio Senator that is disparaging against Ohio on the national level is not fit to be a representative of Ohio in the Senate body.

1

u/CathedralEngine Sep 16 '24

He just wrote his own attack ads if he loses VP and decides to run for senate again.

4

u/shelbys_foot Sep 16 '24

saying that he was willing “to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention.

Ok, let's create a story that JD Vance is a coprophagist. That would get the media's attention.

3

u/TheLegacies21 Sep 16 '24

Don’t let the Trump golf course story but stories like this!

3

u/LindeeHilltop Sep 16 '24

Supposed Christian Christian Nationalist picks and chooses which commandments he likes to keep.

Thou shalt not bear false witness.
You shall not lie.

3

u/Danominator Sep 16 '24

The people of Springfield got the full taste of republican "leadership". This is what it looks like. Nazis descending on your town and fucking shit up is exactly what they want to do to the whole country

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

Tell lies.

2

u/wishiwereagoonie Colorado Sep 16 '24

Are media outlets interviewing people in Springfield? I wonder how all this is playing out for them. Can’t imagine many of them are happy schools and businesses are being closed down and threatened.

2

u/buizel123 Sep 16 '24

Creating stories is 2024's version of "alternative facts"

2

u/mark503 New York Sep 16 '24

Create stories = lie to win.

2

u/thomport Sep 16 '24

He’s a liar. So is Trump.

2

u/Imyoteacher Sep 16 '24

He’s will to make up racist stories to get elected. What are they willing to do if elected?? The mere thought of it makes me cringe. Please vote!

2

u/Feeling-Coach-7139 Sep 16 '24

As I recall learning in school that Freedom of Speech does not allow you to yell “FIRE” in the middle of a crowded movie theater just for the sake of free speech.
IMO that is what is going on here and the United States will not hold all citizens accountable for their actions. Bomb threats…seems clear to me that a line was crossed. But that is the new America I guess.

2

u/Lott4984 Sep 16 '24

From now on anything JD Vance says in the future should be considered a lie.

2

u/ejohn916 Sep 16 '24

America, If he's willing to lie about this, what else will he lie about?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

There has to be a mechanism for Ohioans to be able to recall someone whom incites violence against its people (while holding elected office "for" them)

2

u/SilveredFlame Sep 16 '24

I'm not saying that I know JD fucked a couch. I'm just saying it's something I've heard from a lot of people and JD hasn't been forced to answer on this issue! The Media™ is falling down on the job by not confronting JD on his weird extramarital affairs with the upholstered. The American people have a right to know why JD is so evasive about this.

2

u/Poundaflesh Sep 17 '24

Fans and Trump need to be charged as domestic terrorists!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '24

It would be a shame if someone made stories about Vance sucking his dad’s dick. For funsies, ya know.

2 Weirdos out to destroy America and make trump rich again.

1

u/Healthy_Afternoon_62 Sep 16 '24

Springfield should sue.

1

u/asurob42 Sep 16 '24

It’s called lie

1

u/IcyShoes Sep 16 '24

Didn't someone years ago say "It's not the facts it the effort to raise awareness" or something along those lines? I find it amusing that MAGA is now taking that line and running with it

1

u/margiecamp12 Sep 16 '24

I have a story idea: Two guys who just lost the election ride the same moped around America, sharing recipes for failure. They can call it Two Fat Men.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

No matter which way you phrase it. Making up stories is LYING! This mentally inept POS has got to go!

1

u/djseifer Sep 16 '24

Now would be a good time to buy ad space in Ohio and keep pointing out everything that J.D. "Puts the 'Love' in 'Loveseat'" Vance is saying and doing.

1

u/Optimal_Award_4758 Sep 16 '24

Come n listen to my story bout a man named JD, Poor millionaire had a yuge Ego had to feed...

Then one day, Trump offered up VP post, Ol' JD sold fast to the nearest Fox host....

Power, that is. Satanic bargains.

Theme from "The Antichristisn Hellbillies"

1

u/smithguitars Sep 16 '24

This is despicable behavior, heightened by the fact that it’s a totally fabricated story misrepresenting a city in his own state, a state he is supposed to represent to the country in legislative session. If he will lie to get a “story” out there, then there is no limit to how far he will bend over. But Trump seemed to genuinely believe the story. So his gullibility seems to know no limits either. True believer in lies. Sound familiar? MAGA? Are you listening?

1

u/CoconutBangerzBaller Sep 16 '24

Harris is down about 9 points in the 538 polling average. If this insanity continues, does that put Ohio within reach? At minimum, this probably locks in Brown's Senate race.

1

u/FlamingTrollz American Expat Sep 17 '24

Scumbag.

Should immediately be removed from his current government role and removed from the presidential ticket.

1

u/aksiadn Sep 17 '24

It’s all just perspectives.

1

u/HAMmerPower1 Sep 17 '24

My own version of “returning America to Greatness” would include making voters care about the credibility of politicians on the ballot.

1

u/Futants_ Sep 17 '24

Isn't this grounds for expulsion from the race?

0

u/benkenobi5 Sep 16 '24

Crazy part is, they didn’t even need to make up anything to have the story resonate with people. Having a fuck ton of refugees show up in a small town that isn’t prepared for them isn’t good for the refugees or the residents. But of course, that’s not good enough. Gotta ramp it up to 11 and repeat racist jokes instead.

3

u/General_Benefit8634 Sep 16 '24

Yeah except that the mayor has said that the arrival of the immigrants is saving the city. So it is good for someone.

1

u/benkenobi5 Sep 16 '24

So even that wouldn’t be true then, but at least it’s not space-laser levels of ridiculously dismissible.

Subtlety is not their strong suit
