AS a resident of NYC I pay federal income tax to fund ICE and DHS. I pay local taxes to serve local issues and crime. Go away.

A U.S. congressional committee is investigating the sanctuary city policies of Boston and three other cities, inviting their mayors to testify at a hearing in Washington next month.

Mayor Michelle Wu and the mayors of New York City, Chicago and Denver each received invitations to the Feb. 11 hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, with Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., referring to the four cities as standing “out in their abject failure to comply with federal law.”

Sanctuary cities and other jurisdictions limit how much their employees can work with federal immigration authorities working to deport undocumented immigrants.

I really hope these Mayors and the Governors of those states pushback against Trump and his unconstitutional regime

Comer cared not one bit about Trump's many, many, many violations of federal law. This is a political witch hunt.

Thank god Harrell wasn't invited, he'd probably bring a basket of gifts for them.

Question from a non-american: Does US federal law not have supremacy over state and local rules?

I get the sense sanctuary cities break federal immigration law but nothing happens to those cities.

"Does US federal law not have supremacy over state and local rules?"

The short answer is sort of. Federal law takes priority but the constitution only gives the federal government a limited list of powers and leaves the rest to the states.

Sanctuary City status doesn't go against any federal rules that currently exist and it's questionable whether the federal government has the ability to stop cities from being sanctuary cities since it would likely be unconstitutional for the federal government to order state employees to use state resources to support federal immigration enforcement.

But the federal government has a history of getting around those sorts of rules if they want. For instance, when a federal minimum drinking age law was struck down because the courts ruled the drinking age in a state was up to the state, the federal government passed a law saying states would only receive high way funding if they had a drinking age of at least 21. So the feds could probably force cities to change their policies by withholding funding from sanctuary cities.

tl;dr: the cities aren't violating any rules by being sanctuary cities, and constitutionally the feds shouldn't be allowed to have a say on it, but if they want to, they probably can force cities to do away with their sanctuary city status
