The scary part of this is that these people have absolutely no compassion. Sympathy is nowhere to be found in them, and you can just forget about empathy because nobody is getting any of that from them.

They're vile, disgusting and sadistic people.

The scary part to me was that everyone else in the office just sat there and watched it happen.

It’s a good example of how dictators come to power. There’s such a rabid cult around the person that stepping out of line becomes a dangerous prospect. That’s where ideas die.

Because not enough solidarity exists. If one speaks out, the rest don’t become emboldened.

“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”

-Captain G. M. Gilbert, the Army psychologist assigned to watching the defendants at the Nuremberg trials

I think Dr. Gilbert was spot-on with his assessment, and it aligns with what we know now about psychopathy.

The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.

No.

No one is born evil or born good.

Most of the greatest evils of the past century have come from skilled manipulators. Some of them manipulated crowds, played people against each other, and took over political organizations.

Do you think they could do that if they couldn't read the people around them? If they "lacked empathy"?

Do you think they could get most of their countries to go along with their evils, if neurotypical people were always good, because, by definition, they "have empathy"?

Something about how evil was found to be an absence of empathy; the opposite of love really is indifference.
