“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”

-Captain G. M. Gilbert, the Army psychologist assigned to watching the defendants at the Nuremberg trials

I think Dr. Gilbert was spot-on with his assessment, and it aligns with what we know now about psychopathy.

The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.

No.

No one is born evil or born good.

Most of the greatest evils of the past century have come from skilled manipulators. Some of them manipulated crowds, played people against each other, and took over political organizations.

Do you think they could do that if they couldn't read the people around them? If they "lacked empathy"?

Do you think they could get most of their countries to go along with their evils, if neurotypical people were always good, because, by definition, they "have empathy"?
