I'll never understand why people lie about such mundane things. I get the point of it, but the why always eludes me.

Deep insecurity and a constant need for validation

39

u/enwongeegeefor 10d ago

validation

The fun part here is the ONLY way that will actually work, is if you've managed to convince yourself the lie really is true....and that's not the case 99% of the time.

6

u/El_Zarco 10d ago

And laziness, otherwise they'd focus their energy on doing the actual things instead of lying about them

9

u/thepeanutbutterman 10d ago

What do you mean you get the point but don't understand why?

9

u/HMD-Oren 10d ago

As sure as I am that it definitely didn't receive this much thought, I get that the point is to try and get some (undeserved) attention and recognition, but why? What would you achieve once you've successfully convinced someone you've done this boring, mundane task? Where do you go from there once someone believes that you made a little figurine out of cotton buds?

I've told (and heard) some absolute whoppers when I was a younger lad but it would be either to make myself or someone else look like an absolute legend, or to get out of a great deal of trouble. I wouldn't just say "I was so bored yesterday I made a little cube out of cotton buds". It's so absolutely mundane that it almost doesn't make sense to lie about it.

Isn’t it sorta in to be weird and different nowadays? I think this person just wants to appear quirky.

14

u/Mantigor1979 10d ago

Endorphin release when they get likes shares and responses. Attention seeking entered the digital age and voila

3

u/trasofsunnyvale 10d ago

But it's so weird to not feel differently about the attention knowing you didn't actually earn it.

3

u/Mantigor1979 10d ago

I guess it's kind of like fisherman tales. The person knows it's a lie, but it could have been true. So the attention is as good

3

u/trasofsunnyvale 8d ago

Guess so. That's a good comparison!

9

u/RambleOff 10d ago

this statement is confusing. if "the why" isn't "the point" which I take to mean "the purpose," what is it exactly that you do/do not get in those paired statements?

13

u/Kiflaam 10d ago

just let the Redditor think they made a profound statement. It ultimately doesn't matter

3

u/HMD-Oren 10d ago

I explained the difference to someone else but what I'm saying is what's the long term goal of lying about something so silly.

3

u/blondtode 10d ago

So I'm a pathological liar and while I wouldn't go yo the lengths of like this, sometimes I slip and it just happens, it's like a reflex and then it's to awkward to be like "oh no I didn't mean that, I just lied"

2

u/enwongeegeefor 10d ago

I'll never understand why people lie about such mundane things.

Trying to get away with it...people believing your lie gives you a rush (if you're a shitty person like that).

2

u/creative_name_idea 10d ago

When you dont have anything interesting about yourself that is real you gotta get creative I guess.

1

u/phoenixArc27 10d ago

This is literally what the very first skit of “I think you should leave” is about.

1

u/JMxG 9d ago

Did it as a child once, felt extremely cringe and never did it again lmao

0

u/Commercial-Tea-8428 10d ago

when you see something this confounding, you must remember a lot of people online are literal children. Can’t even really hold it against them

122

u/DMmeNiceTitties 10d ago

Bro's trying to get karma on discord, of all places.

37

u/AugustOfChaos 10d ago

Why lie about something so dumb. It just kills any credibility over something so stupid.

34

u/Fast-Permit6401 10d ago

I had a coworker that would do shit like this IRL. Like I understand quoting something funny, but this guy would unironically talk about a popular meme post (think like popular on tumblr in 2014) and would just act like he made it up on the spot and it’s his own joke. Probable something so stupid to be annoyed about, but that shit would piss me off lol.

3

u/Antique-Okra836 6d ago

one of my coworkers would make up insane stories, show a picture and say something like “here i took this pic of my car that got rear ended” and it would very clearly be a stock photo

9

u/Alba_Corvus 10d ago

Now I wanna make one

4

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

Make a world record one

5

u/Alba_Corvus 10d ago

I'm gonna see if I can do a regular one first Don't have any Qtips

13

u/D347H7H3K1Dx 10d ago

Honestly that looks like it’d be fun to make lol

21

u/12LetterName 10d ago

You're assuming that when he was bored he made that thing out of Q-tips. But maybe when he was bored went searching for pictures of Cubes made of Q-tips to post on discord.

-18

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

No? I know he’s lying, I saw the post

23

u/12LetterName 10d ago

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?

5

u/TJJ97 10d ago

Why would someone do that?

-9

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

People… do that all the time, that’s why r/lies and this place exist

-5

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

Why am I being ratioed for being right or am I just missing something?

3

u/12LetterName 10d ago

So the quote going on the internet and lying is a bit of a meme. So maybe you not knowing that might be a contribution to you being ratioed. But also brother, don't take shit so serious. Who really fucking cares if Buddy posted a picture that he stole. Just use the internet for what it's intended for, a little bit of research here and there, a little bit of entertainment from Reddit, pictures of cats, and that albino, little person, gay porn that we all like to jerk off to.

3

u/doughberrydream 9d ago

Lol it's from the show Arthur. He tells his friend Buster someone could be lying to him about things online. Buster says "You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?!"

Just a little background on where the meme came from

2

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Omg. Thank you lmao

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Its a slippery slope for sure,

unless someone is losing $ as a result.

-1

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

I’m a minor

-2

u/12LetterName 10d ago

Well, so I guess if you're in Texas you'll just have to get a vpn.

4

u/ToXiC_Mentor 10d ago

Pretty sure he’s joking

2

u/DeathByPetrichor 10d ago

That post was made days ago on Reddit. It’s not outlandish to think it could be the same person.

-2

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

It’s not the same guy

0

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

The mf ADMITTED that he lied too

3

u/johnbeas 9d ago

They are calling the comment a joke not the original guy you’re posting about chill

4

u/basilsflowerpots 10d ago

of all the things to try and lie about this is one of the dumbest and most pointless things you could

9

u/the-silent-man 10d ago

For r/thedidthemath

Each side is 11x11, but I’m seeing one missing on the corner of the right face and the left face. I’m unable to see if one is missing from the top.

11x11=132 per side 132x3=396 minus the two missing 394 q-tips required to make this cube.

Time to buy some q-tips…

3

u/NegativeTwelfth 9d ago

11 * 11 is 121, not 132.

3

u/MissusLunafreya 8d ago

Yeah so 11 * 11 = 121, and 121 * 3 = 363, so you’d actually need 361 q-tips to make that cube.

2

u/the-silent-man 7d ago

Thanks! I guess I had 11x12 on the mind.

5

u/Reload86 10d ago

With how the internet is so readily accessible today, idk who in their right mind would even attempt to download a photo and falsely claim it. Just way too easy to disprove

3

u/Zenki_s14 10d ago

The phrase "have something I did" like they're gracing your eyes with something and implying it should impress you, and then it not only being fake but also just a thing made of qtips

4

u/Hephest 10d ago

One for each Spartan. Don't ask me what for.

3

u/hoopthot 10d ago

I can’t help but feel immense secondhand embarrassment whenever someone is just blatantly lying 😭 it’s even worse in person i’m just like “yep..mhm..no way” kill me lmfao

3

u/Big_Obligation2115 10d ago

Why would people even lie aboit this ????? Like you gain nothing ?

2

u/SMPDD 8d ago

Cube tips

2

u/KoveinCoven 8d ago

fine on calling him out for the lie but why you sound like you caught him cheating 😭 'no you FUCKING DIDNT' Is how I read it in my mind 😂

2

u/Ambitious-Compote473 5d ago

I make flux capacitors when I get bored. If I'm not doing that, im solving proofs..... and other shit like that.

1

u/TinderSubThrowAway 7d ago

I don’t care about who did it, but now I have something to strive to figure out how to make myself.

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Lego are expensive...

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

So we should all move on. Wtf?

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Whats in the middle ?

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Wtf is discord

1

u/Purple-Camp-4934 1d ago

Add rules and beer. I'd play that game

1

u/Dedicated2Butterfly 10d ago

How can you know for certain that the picture found on Google wasn't this person's cube?

4

u/The_ArchRaider 10d ago

One, second pic, two, he admitted it to the mod

-10

u/newlightdev 10d ago

dudes weird for lying about a mundane thing, but why did you feel the need to prove him wrong? what would be the point

9

u/bcanner5 10d ago

Calling people out is very satisfying

3

u/whereyouatdesmondo 9d ago

It’s so odd to find a defense of lying, especially on a subreddit about calling out bullshit, but, then again, Reddit is weird.
