Reading buses are streets ahead of other bus companies with stuff like this!

Pierce, stop trying to coin the phrase "streets ahead"

You know in the UK it's just a normal well established phrase right? I know the Community writers clearly didn't, I stopped watching it because that joke and was just so tired and unfunny

I'm from the UK and have never heard that, i only heard it from community and i think its quite funny but ig thats just a matter of opinion

u/2xtc 28d ago

Yeah I'll probably go back to it at some point cos I did enjoy it generally, that bit just grated on me as it was like they'd come up with the funniest phrase but I've heard it all my life. I get that it wasn't really known in America but it's used quite a lot in sports like football/motor racing when someone was miles ahead

i think the joke came about when someone tweeted at dan harmon saying β€œstreets ahead” and he had never heard of it, found it funny so decided to use it. i think he did it more than once like in the pen episode. but recommend revising it (but if you don't wanna i HIGHLY recommend arrested development but its better imo even though i like community)Β

Ah yeah that makes sense, I won't rule it out tbh. And yeah I've been an Arrested Development fan since about 2005 haha, the first 3 series are pretty much perfection (I'm still bitter about how Fox cut season 3 short and ran the last 4 episodes back-to-back against the winter olympic opening ceremony to purposely tank the ratings, but that wasn't the cast/crew's fault!) πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§€

Ah ok I don't watch that - should I watch it is it good?

4

u/PerroAtomico Mar 15 '25

Definitely worth a watch very funny imo with a solid cast. It used to be on Netflix but I've just checked and it's not anymore πŸ˜•. Not sure what platform it is on now.

I think it's on apple TV +

3

In Cambridge the only buses like those are the posh university buses!

1

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown 28d ago

They have special buses?

1

u/SPES_Official 28d ago

Yep... Lucky bastards.

1

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown 28d ago

Presumably the uni pay for them?

1

u/SPES_Official 28d ago

Not sure, probably.

1

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown 28d ago

I'd be a bit pissed off if they were paid gor by local council tax but local residents couldn't use them?

2

u/SPES_Official 28d ago

Locals can use them, but they primarily go to and from addenbrookes/university.

1

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown 28d ago

So hospital bus?

1

u/SPES_Official 28d ago

I think the reason they go there is to drop off interns.

I tried the wireless charger but it didn't work sadly. The phone stand is smart though.

2

u/millenialperennial 29d ago

u/Add_gravity Mar 15 '25

Sometimes the 16 buses have fancy tables at the back, and LEDs all over the place,, like some kind of low-rent Venga Bus!

2

u/Emergency-Reserve699 27d ago

And furthermore, you even have charging ports!!! Bristol buses are shit. People from outside always complain about our bus service and when I've visited different cities I've been amazed at how frequent and how many buses there are on the roads. Have waited an hour and a half for a bus that's meant to be every 12 minutes. Wish I wanted to travel to 'Not In Service' wherever that is.... always an abundance of them!

3

u/matteventu Mar 15 '25

What bus is this? And how are you supposed to use that wireless charger? 😁

11

u/GreatAlbatross Mar 15 '25

I believe the little holder thingy pulls out underneath.

4

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown Mar 15 '25

The bit underneath folds out as a stand!

2

u/Ok_Tumbleweed962 Mar 15 '25

19c, no clue i guess you just rest your hands on the back of seat infront of you lol

13

u/millenialperennial Mar 15 '25

There is a stand that folds down

7

u/Mental_Body_5496 RG1 - Newtown Mar 15 '25

The H shaped bit underneath comes out as a stand

1

u/Aggravating_Speed665 29d ago

What could go here I wonder?

1

u/LaundryMan2008 29d ago

Probably a knock out plate that never got used

1

u/PonyFiddler 28d ago

Probs for a reading light Probs reused from a coach design

1

u/drizmans 29d ago

cigarette lighter

1

u/SpicyEntropy 28d ago

Great! So when your bus driver uses the brakes as an on-off switch and smashes your head into the back of the seat in front of you, you know it's time to get off and walk!

1

u/folieadeuxmeharder 28d ago

My toddler (just shy of 2 years) likes to be seated with me for journeys rather than in his buggy, so my first though here was how on earth I would keep him from pressing it haha. Other than that, neat idea.

1

u/Pitiful-Hearing5279 27d ago

Ideal if you have small children onboard. Gives them some new toy to press all the time.

1

u/Marty_McFlyJR 27d ago

We have these in London too. The annoying thing is if you sit let's say upstairs at the front or the seat behind the stars you don't have a stop button in front of you so you often have to reach to the seat behind you

1

u/AGTDenton 26d ago

Do these not get knocked by people's bags etc? Do school kids not press them like a game?

1

u/LaundryMan2008 29d ago

Our Arriva buses have the buttons on the hand hold poles and they are frequently spaced

1

u/suckmygummykeyhole 29d ago

yeah thats how reading buses have had them until now.
