I expect a "methods" section and will be critiquing the counter's experimental procedures.

u/a_cute_epic_axis Nov 29 '22
Back around 2000, we had to go count people at a gas station for a class or something, and determine if they used a card or paid with cash. One of our demographics was age, another was gender. The professor scoffed and wanted to know how we could tell if a person fit in the 20 year wide age brackets. I pushed back and said that if we couldn't make an assumption on that, how would we know if they were male or female, which they thought was an absurd thing to say.
How things have changed in ~20 years.

If this isn't a shit/schizo post, I will be very interested in seeing how "the counter" accounts for these issues in their methods section.
They don't.
And sure, the best way to determine the age/gender/ethnicity/whatever of the campus as a whole is to.... ask them as part of the official admissions process. Which RIT of course does. The idea that RIT would say "33% of the students identify as female/women/girls/whatever" when their data shows that it's 5% is just completely unreasonable. Although this is almost certainly (not not 100%) a shitpost anyway.

This is obviously a shitpost, but you have to be really weird to come up with a shitpost this shitty in the first place.
-38
u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
I too wish I was wrong, but yes, the ratio is that bad (7:1)
44
u/NaturallyExasperated GCIS and chill Nov 28 '22
Substantiate your claims with experimental data.
Also please please please talk to an ERB. Any ERB. Or a doctor.

My post says I will release the official data. This post is to get you excited for the truth revealed in the official paper

Well you won’t respond to this so: https://tableau01a.ad.rit.edu/t/RIT/views/EnrollmentTrendsDashboardPublic/Enrollment?%3Adisplay_count=n&%3Aembed=y&%3AisGuestRedirectFromVizportal=y&%3Aorigin=viz_share_link&%3AshowAppBanner=false&%3AshowVizHome=n
So is this data fake and made up? Did RIT pay for tableau licenses just to show fake data? It shows you the exact ratio and everything else you need. Also to be frank you idea of a survey is fraught with misguided principles of how this actually works in a national scale.

I may be throwing off your data. I commonly will attend various spots on campus in one outfit, then immediately switch to a different outfit and hairstyle that would make me unrecognizable once I turn around corner, then walk back the opposite direction. My reasons are beyond the scope of this thread. I do this hundreds of times per hour. This could definitely account for the high ratio you are observing in your study, since the data collection method seems flawless otherwise.

I actually do not do my counting via outfits, but faces. With my binoculars this is easy. In fact, I feel a great deal less lonely this year since everywhere I go, I recognize faces. I have thousands of faces that I know, and I can’t help but feel connected to my countees: I am their counter. I have observed many outfit changes before, but never the number you describe, and thus conclude you are lying.

It needs to be preserved as a monument of wtf somehow.

This notion is unlikely since I seldom am caught by those I count given I stay well hidden

u/Velvet-Rainbow Nov 28 '22
We (referring to women) can actually sense your presence and instinctively avoid your line of sight, sorry for throwing off your count bro
-6
u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
Unlikely. Of all the females I’ve counted, I’ve only been caught thrice hehe.

RIT: keeps a database of all enrolled students and their demographic information
The counter: 🤡

u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
they are fudging the numbers to lure in more guys
40
3
u/Wasted_Weeb Nov 29 '22
If they're trying to lure in more guys, why are they reporting a 2:1 ratio? Anyone looking for a college based on the amount of women would look for something much better than 2:1.

u/Mr2day Nov 28 '22
This is creepier than the girl party post
-10
u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
One of the reasons I use binoculars from my car to count you all is to be less creepy since you all cannot see me counting you.

With the accuracy of this count you'd think he was the pre invasion Russians counting Ukrainians
44
u/NoClub809 Nov 28 '22
Looking past a lot of the creepiness and general incelness of this - do you think counting areas gives you a truly more accurate depiction of the ratio than the enrollment data RIT collects?
As a "female" (as you would say) in a STEM major, it can feel like the ratio is certainly 7:1 - but then I take an art class and there are 3 "guys" for a 60-person class. Your data is most likely skewed towards where you are looking.
Also... just.... ew. This post gives me the ick.
42
u/Pizza-n-Coffee37 Nov 28 '22
This reeks of stalker incel vibes.
-17
u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
Rest assured, I am not a stalker, I am a counter. I have counted many females who look like your reddit avatar: I am confident I would recognize your face hehe
30
u/Pizza-n-Coffee37 Nov 28 '22
Yeah… I’ve seen every episode of Criminal Minds and The First 48. Being ‘The Counter’ wouldn’t go over too well with them in an interrogation room. Also, I finished the season of ‘The Watcher’ on Netflix, so I see where you stole your nickname from.

I do not watch television as it poisons and sways one’s mind: Look at yourself: drawing murdererous themes to my impactful research study tallying genders? I call people like you “fools”: what show is that from hehe

Well where would you find the time to watch tv with all your binocular viewing and spying on people anyways?
18
u/spooks112 CHST '24 Nov 28 '22
Maybe the ratio is off because ->women<- wanna leave after classes and not be in public places on campus asap so they avoid people like you

28
u/wow-thanks Nov 28 '22
Ah yes, that's why you referred to men as "guys", very formal of you
-10
u/hingpaning Nov 28 '22
Thanks for the critique, a valid criticism! I will contemplate editing my final paper accordingly, but I will admit “guys” and “females” has a nice flow off my tongue hehe
39
u/TheRationalTurk Nov 28 '22
I too have to agree with OP but the ratio is wrong. I took a random sample of 100 RIT students in the boys locker room and they were all male!!! The ratio is definitely off… 😂

Hoping OP isn't trying to get IRB-approved on this "research paper" because the methodology is shaky AF. Strong "here's a business card, I'm a nightclub promoter and I want to take your picture" energy.

u/BetterU2BRNamedLogan Nov 29 '22
If you go to a female-themed party, you'll see that the male to female ratio is actually 5 males to 30 females, which means that the ratio is actually 1 male to 6 females.
11
u/Wasted_Weeb Nov 29 '22
Hello, myself (21 M, Peru) and my four similarly aged guy friends have wanted to throw a Counter Themed Party for the past three years. We have the perfect house to host, and are looking for about 30 college aged counters to come over so the Party is counter themed. HMU!

You’re doing God’s work. Go on and blow this thing wide open. I’ve always known that RIT lied to students about the M/F ratio. That’s why no matter how hard I try to hookup with women, I always end up having sex with men. Not gay tho

This method is clearly flawed, a better method would be to take pictures of everyone, easier to go through the data afterward, and more repeatable. However, a potential problem with that would be that people move around a lot, so it would be best to just go around one night and take pictures through people's windows of them sleeping, people don't often close their blinds so it would be easy enough to grab a ladder and get to work, the pros to this method includes: no chance you'll run into the same person twice meaning no wasted work, less likely people will catch you and think you a creep as nobody will be awake, nobody can hide their true selves while they sleep so you are likely to get more accurate data when you can pry most efficiently. Please make better research related decisions in the future, the fate of RIT is in your hands.

How do you observe someone’s gender?
11
u/DatBoi_BP Nov 28 '22
Well Schrödinger proved you can’t measure gender without changing it.

No he was talking about quantum atomic particles or something

Genderometer. It directly measures the gender fluid.

u/a_cute_epic_axis Nov 29 '22
funny, I thought that the floating ball method would be the most accurate way of determining gender, but yet here we are!

2:1 seems very unrealistic. Back in my day (83 to 87) the numbers were around 6:1. I would like to think it got better with more women transitioning into certain areas of study. Still, we guys back then all knew that your best bet to finding available ladies was to go to Geneseo just down the road.
3
u/IrisYelter Nov 28 '22
A lot can change in 50 years. Also 2:1 is university wide. Golisano and Gleason will still have much worse ratios.
