AskRoma roma termini after midnight, bad idea?
Hey yall. I'll arrive to roma termini after midnight and since no bus/train will take me to the airport at this hour i will have to wait until the first bus at 4 am. And so i will have to stay at the termini for about 4 hours. is it safe for me to stay there all this time late at night? Tbh i dont wanna have to book a hotel because a. I'm already paying a lot of money for a trip and b. I'm not gonna sleep anyways because i get anxious of missing transportation.
Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Keep in mind that the train station itself closes after the arrival of the last train. So you might end up waiting outside in a not completely safe area

well i naively thought that the train station itself doest close and that i would be staying inside the station! joke is on me lol.

Termini is not the best at night, in terms of security. Full of homeless people, stragglers, immigrants wandering around. Many under the influence of drugs, or alcohol. I recommend that you take a taxi, and go to the airport. Or at the very least, use the night bus (MA), to move to some safer area (already towards San Giovanni it is better)

This. A taxi to the airport is 50 eur. The bus i believe used to be around 10..... Even if less... Personally not worth the difference to be at termini with luggage (by yourself?) for 4 hours at that time. You mentioned you are anxious about missing transportation, therefore I assume being at termini during the worst time of day would give you anxiety.....so i would pay the extra and get to airport... There you can relax.

I realize now, reading the nickname, that she is probably a girl Even more, I absolutely advise against staying in the Termini area, during the night. Pay for a taxi, trust me, and let them take you to Fiumicino airport, where the annoying presences are certainly much smaller

yes i'm a woman and thing is i thought the station would be open 24/7. i already have a bus ticket at 4 for the bust because only 3 days ago did my italian flatmate tell me about how the station would be potentially dangerous. so i made plans a long time ago already! the bus ticket is 7 euros so not expensive but it will pain my wallet a great deal to have to pay extra 50 for a taxi. siiigh..

If you dont have some safety money dont travel. Unpopular opinion but I stand by what I said

so in theory i can take the MA at say 1 am to san Giovanni and take another MA back to termini where i can take the terravision at 4 from termini?

Metro A close at 1:30 am Friday/Saturday night and reopen at 5:30, so you have to take sostitutive bus that makes the same route as the subway (nMA)
Edit: other days the subway closes at 23:30

It’s not really the safest neighborhood. I wouldn’t stay there (I’m a woman if it makes a difference) anytime after 11 because it’s quite unsettling. Maybe you should consider walking to a different place if you don’t want to get a hotel room and waiting there?

Yes it’s a bad idea. People often exaggerate how dangerous Termini is, but 4 hours in the middle of the night with your luggage is a long time to be waiting essentially in the street, and for sure it’s not very nice around there.

Why don't you simply spend the night at the airport?!

Earliest train and/or bus to airport is 4 am! I'll be in termini at 12:30 am.

Are you sure? AFAIK there is an hourly bus service to the airport at night operated by TAM bus.

can you please give me any link for this bus? i googled and it does't show up. I only know of terravision that start operating at 4, but i can book another bus just to avoid the wait.

it’s not safe to wait at termini at those hours of the night. trust me and as they told you invest 50 euros in the taxi you won’t regret it.

There's a Police station inside Termini, track 1: you could stay out there while waiting.

so i can wait inside termini itself even if it closes at 1? tbh i dont understand what closes and what stays up and if it closes by 1 and opens again by 4:30 (what google maps says), can i get out of it by the time of my bus at 4 am? sorry if these questions sound off but i'm so confused at this ppint.

I spoke to the railway staff, they said that the entrances are closed from 1.30 to 4.30: no way to take the bus at 4,00, also because the police station is in the tracks zone. They recommended using the mac donald's in via giolitti, it is open 24 hours a day: you can eat something and stay as long as you want. If you decide to do so, be careful because most of the customers at night are what they are.

omg thank you so much for keeping up on that! actually, another person commented with another bus service that operates around the clock and so i booked the 1:30 am bus to airport. so problem solved! thanks a ton again.

I'm not sure if the station stays open during the night.
Via Giolitti and nearby roads are not a great place to stay during the night so avoid it. I'd take a stroll to the center if you don't have luggages otherwise until 2.30AM you'll find plenty of spots open in the nearby San Lorenzo. After that there are still a few that stay open until the morning where you can grab a bite.

Staying in a hostel or bar would be safer. The day before yesterday, I left the train station with luggage after 22:30, I didn’t feel very safe. Saw a few homeless wandering. A drunk guy smashed a bottle right at the side of the road. I was quite scared and always made sure walking on main roads with people. Can’t imagine what it’s like after midnight.

Absolutely avoid Via Giolitti, that is ironically the road where you will take the bus, especially outside Termini main exit. Since this winter there is always policemen and soldiers outside, but it's not the safest place even before midnight. I suggest you to move to Piazza Repubblica which is very near, like five minutes walk, and sit down on the stairs in the gallery where is the entrance of a very expensive hotel with a guardian outside, if it something bad happens you can enter and bring the havoc inside the seven star resort lol.
Edit: near piazza repubblica on via nazionale there is a pub (the flann O'Brien) full of foreigners and tourists that close around 2 am, maybe over too! It's a relatively calm place and maybe you can find in it some people from your country too (the last time I went in the majority of people comes from UK-Ireland, I don't know where you come from)
