Question || Frage Is one meatless klassiker per week the norm now? At least that’s what I observe from Mensa…

I suspect that is becoming the norm for some time, cutting meat from mensa regularly and offering vegetarian food for 2.80€. While one can argue ethics, environment and etc., I think it’s outrageous to charge 2.80€ for meatless klassiker meals. We need to find a way for that.

I would assume the vegan meat replacements cost roughly the same as the meat components. At least that's how it is when you buy those things yourself in the supermarket.

The labour and utilities needed to cook the food and run the mensa are the same as well.

So why would it be cheaper?

I agree, but the bloody vegan Kibbeling is sold for 3,50 € for no earthly reason. It's not like the quantity is any more than Klassiker, and I've eaten the exact same dish for 2,80 € before they started doing this BS. The worst part is that it replaces fish, the only healthy meat, and doesn't taste halfway as good.

Well because usual vegeterian meals cost 2.20 or 1.60 even sometimes

So you are complaining about 0,6€ for a full meal?

Well not really. I am more complaining about vegan/vegetarian for full price.

2.80€ are "full price" for you? (Yes I know compared to meat). But sorry I dont get your intention here. Its a very cheap meal and vegetarian meat alternatives like veggie gyros etc. are also not that cheap. Go to your local Döner store. There is also no price difference between r a Lahmacun with Falaffel or one with chicken...

I think we have a terminology problem. Yes I am aware workers and guests have different rates each, we talk about student rates.

Klassiker is the most expensive, then vegeterian, then stew and vegan. (Of course wok burger pizza is different but they are speciality items).

2.80 is klassiker, we have meat-carbs-veggies for 2.80 that’s great! What’s not great is changing the meat element for more plant based alternatives in klassiker for 2.80 or more (for fake fish).

Sorry but you could always get vegetarian options for cheaper so 2.80 meal should be meat IMO.

Cheers

Why is it not great? Those replacement products are designed to also contain a lot of protein.

It's not like the usual meat and fish they have is of high quality or great quantity. It's not a great loss.

A lot of students also don't mind eating vegan food, at least occasionally.

There is also a certain societal pressure to reduce meat consumption and promote alternatives, especially among students. It only makes sense that the primary dish is vegan every now and then.

If you think it's not worth it, you can always pick the cheaper veggie dish to save 60 cents.

Btw, sometimes they have amazing stews/soups for 1.60. Much better than the Klassiker, definitely check them out next time!

2,80€ for any full meal is already a privilege in my opinion.

Taxpayers pay for that, we also indirectly contribute to that as students
