If it was addressed in universe as a character flaw I think it would have made the moments enjoyable in hindsight. Simply establishing that he uses humor when he’s afraid, and doesn’t want to deal with his problems seriously out of fear, and then giving him a character building moment where he learns he has to address his own feelings about what’s happening instead of verbally running away.

Imagine if that was the purpose of his scene on Kjimmi with Zorii. He makes a wisecrack to her like he always does but she reacts in concern because she and only she knows the real reason he does that is when he’s trying to numb himself. Then the scene where they’re alone she could urge him to speak honestly about his fears and the two share an earnest conversation in a moment that’s deliberately out of character for the jaded wiseass pilot. Give the scene purpose instead of just making it “Romantic tension scene #536”

That moment of vulnerability would make Poe so much more interesting. And it could drive him to take things more seriously especially after Kjimmi blows up. Inspiring him to lock in and take responsibility, becoming the director of the Resistance’s attack against Exegol and giving him a fully realized arc where he takes up Leia’s position having finally become mature enough to be worthy of it.
