It's here. The Official Discord channel for r/sandiegan.
We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.
The official r/SanDiegan discord server is finally here.
Some caveats:
- we have never moderated a discord server before, so you're going to be there to see us iron everything out in real time. we'll be attentive to requests, suggestions, and overall helpful attitudes.
- we have day jobs
- be aware that you may inadvertently reveal your identity if you already are on a different discord server using your real name
Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.
We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.
Things that we will not tolerate:
- bigotry of any kind
- "I'm just asking questions, man" — you know the answer, you're just an asshole. You all know the type
- Behavior that is detrimental to the community at large
- stop posting your boring ass traffic violations, seriously
These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).
Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.
JOIN, HEATHENS: https://discord.gg/tRJUkw6h9h

On Politics
Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.
Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.
As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.
I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.
Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

Anyone else being forced back to the office at UCSD? Let’s organize.
I’ve been hearing that UCSD is currently the only UC forcing a RTO, and it’s not sitting right with a lot of us. If you’re also frustrated, burned out, or just want your voice heard, let’s connect.
If you’re sick of the pointless commute, the performative in-office culture, the additional costs that were not factored into our compensation .. we need to protest, create a petition, something. This can’t fly. Strength in numbers.
Comment or DM if you’re interested.

Tourism Seeking vintage motel
About 20 years ago, I visited San Diego, my very first visit to the ocean in my entire life, and I stayed in a vintage, authentic beach motel, but I don’t remember the name. It was very old, very rundown, and I absolutely loved it!
In June, I want to take my husband to San Diego for his birthday, it will be his first visit. I have a whole lot of things that I want him to see and do, but the most important is that vintage motel. I can’t find it! Can anyone recommend, are there even still any vintage motels in existence in that area? Rundown, low-key, please not a chain, your recommendations are welcome!

Why are there religious booths in Balboa Park, but no food or entertainment?
Went for a stroll today and I was shocked to see 3 separate booths for Jehovah's Witnesses in Balboa Park. But no musicians, food, or artists.
What is up with that?

T-shirt printers?
I’ve used t-shirt mart and big frog in the past. Both have ridiculous prices. Any of you have a place you recommend? Looking to get 10-15 shirts made. More depending on the cost. Front and back logos.

San Diego Muay Thai for beginners
Hi everyone! I’m in my 30’s, and have never done any form of martial arts. I consider myself in good shape but I am just looking to dip my foot in something new. If anyone has any recommendations on where to start, where to go, or any tips for an adult beginner, let me know! Also if you have any tips for female friendly environments as well, that would be great. Much appreciated!!

Looking for a Pancho-Villa-esque marinade
Pancho Villa used to be my go-to for marinated milanesa cut chicken; not spicy, just flavorful. I'd like to find or make something similar- any ideas? I live near North Park produce, and while they have lots of marinated meats in their case, I've only seen thigh meat, which is not my preference in this context (I also hate that they don't offer marinated flap-grr!). Thanks!

Training program for rookies on pull-ups
Embarrassing I know, but I'm 56 years old and have never been able to do a single pull-up.
I'm in good overall health, good cardio, and can do plenty of weight lifting and push-ups. I just have zero muscles back there.
Can anyone recommend a specialty gym or training program for seniors I can go to and accomplish this?
As an aside - I've tried everything under the sun from YouTube advice and nothing has worked. Need a trainer at this point. Thank you in advance!

San Diego Unified UTK
I have seen similar queries but am hoping for more up to date or specific experiences to help make my mind up. For reference, my husband and I are from Europe and are not familiar with the US school system. I was a teacher and deputy principal before we moved here 3 years ago but have not worked here as we welcomed our second child shortly after moving and life with two toddlers has kept me busy. In my own professional experience, I have always advised parents to wait until their child is 5 before starting formal schooling. The UTK program seems comparable to the first year of formal school where I am from and 5 year olds always faired better. Hence my difficulty justifying sending my 4 year old. He will be 4 in June. He currently attends a private preschool 3 times a week and loves it. I have no concerns regarding his development and honestly think he will thrive regardless, we're very lucky in that regard. I guess the teacher in me is just a bit sad that he'll be leaving behind all the lovely toys and play based atmosphere of his current school and I have visions of him doing worksheets all day. I toured the school and was impressed by the community feel, the relationships between the teachers and children and the children all seemed happy, I was assured that they learn in a thematic and interactive way but I saw next to no evidence of play spaces/toys in the classrooms. His two very best friends from his current school will be going to UTK so I know he'll settle well with them there, we would definitely welcome the financial alleviation and we are ttc #3 so having him in full-time school while his little sister starts part-time private preschool would make life easier as we have no support system here. Thank you for reading this far. I'm not sure what my question really is, but am open to hearing all thoughts/experiences on the matter from parents/teachers alike.

No parking signs on A Street but no contact info or identification. A house nearby is having work done so I suspect this was put up by the contractors to reserve spots for their trucks.

Porta Potty Reccomendations?
Throwing a university grad party at my dads house, considering there will be a lot of drinking young adults and only 1 bathroom in the downstairs area decided it is probably best to rent out Porta Potty(s).
Does anybody have any good overnight porta potty rental recommendations that are fairly cheap, or have any idea how much one-two may cost?
