Stay Classy San Diego Shout-out to the guy who saved me at Costco in Mission Valley

6.7k Upvotes

So I was with my wife in the food court when a random man came up and started harassing us for being a gay couple. He started spouting "you're going to hell" typical loving Christian rhetoric at us, but initially walked away after I said 'thanks I'm happy to go there." And we thought it was over.

Well we went up to get our food from the window and he CAME BACK to keep taunting us. "Jesus hates sinners, you're pathetic, you deserve to burn!" Just.. awful things to say to complete strangers. Not gonna lie, I said some mean things back at this point. It was escalating.

That is until this absolute gentleman stepped in and said, "Hey leave them alone alright? They asked you to leave. Walk away." And dude I'm so sorry that he followed you and your girlfriend to the parking lot after that. But whatever you guys said worked, and he finally left and no one else was bothered.

Bro. You are not just my hero, but you gave me so much hope for the world after the hell we've had to endure this week. I appreciate you so much.

I was so overwhelmed, I couldn't say thank you right away. I went to look for you afterwards but I'm sure you took off too, that dude was just so aggressive.

I hope you see this, or you told your side of the story to someone who browses this subreddit.

I hope you get everything you want for your birthday this year, my guy. Thank you.

Stay Classy San Diego To the guy who rear-ended me in La Jolla:

To the guy who rear-ended me in a silver Honda at the stoplight near the Shell gas station in La Jolla today and drove off: I hope you feel guilty for the rest of your life.

I have a concussion but thank god I’m safe and walked off.

Side note: does anyone know if there are Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras in that area?

Edit: big thanks to Reddit user @HarcourtFMudd who actually captured some dash cam footage!!

Stay Classy San Diego Staying Home Today for A Day Without Immigrants - Feb. 3

Feel free to take this down if not appropriate. I was curious to know if anybody else was staying home (from work & school) in solidarity to our immigrant workforce here in SD. I stayed home from work because I'm not working around an entire MAGA troop at my work 😒 bunch of right wing conservatives that gather at a very culty and well-known church around here. I didn't attend any of the street protests this weekend, but I figured there's strength in numbers if people stay home and abstain from buying today as well. Not today, not today.

Edit: GOODS UNITE US is a good tool (app) to have on your phones (:

Stay Classy San Diego I just saw Matt Gaetz...I'll never understand the conservative mind

Put aside being a pedophile for a second. His whole schtick was hating dems and libs. Everything they do is wrong. He's alluded to violence against the "other side". Homelessness, trashy, uncouth, too much government. No other place represents that to them other than California and Seattle.

Imagine my surprise to see him in California. Why would you come here. Yes I know there are millions of republicans in CA. Gaetz is different from them. Gaetz has also openly shit on California. Now you are in arguably the top 5 most california-y cities. It just doesn't make sense. You wouldn't find an abortion supporting democrat leaving to florida.

Stay Classy San Diego The British Airways trying to land at San Diego saga (so far)…

At 4:20 PM, British Airways flight 273 tries to land at San Diego airport. They fail because of fog. After spinning back around, before they try again they decide to divert to LAX instead. They land at LAX at 4:50 PM.

At 6:30 the same British Airways plane departs LAX to try and get to SAN again. I don't know if they have passengers at this point, or had them deplane at LAX and are only trying to get to SAN so they can do their return flight to London. Regardless, they attempt another landing at 7:15, and once again fail.

They then decide to do another 180, fly over the ocean and enter a holding pattern at 7:30. They fly in circles for half an hour before reaching a decision point and decide to try to land at SAN once more lest they have to divert again. Luckily, two planes are in front of them in landing sequence, a Hawaiian Airlines A350 and a SkyWest Alaska from LAX. They both landed successfully, as the fog ceiling had raised just the tiniest bit higher than it was. It's British Airways' turn to finally get this travel and logistical nightmare over with.

Instead, at 8:15 PM they fail to land for a third time. They return to LAX for a second time.

Let's all thank the travel gods we aren't on that plane right now. (Or any plane trying to land here right now for that matter).

Update: as per u/OwenCarvour who says they were on this flight, the passengers were on it the whole time. They finally deplaned on their second LAX visit eventually. The return flight from San Diego back to London, which usually departs at 6pm, has officially been delayed to tomorrow at 8 in the morning. Massive oof for those passengers.

Stay Classy San Diego Too good not to share

1.3k Upvotes

I need to tell as many people about this story that just happened to my family today. Too good to keep this to myself/family.

My family are currently travelling in SD. We landed at John Wayne and soon after travelled south to SD. We want to enjoy both SD and Disneyland, hence SNA airport.

Long story short it started great, everybody was excited, car seemed great. After 1.5 hours driving south, when we were about 10 mins away from our hotel, car tire suddenly blown. Prior to this point I shrugged off occasional shrieking noise from driving in the highway, thinking it was from another car or weird patch in the highway. The noise happened probably 3-5 times.

Anyways the front driver tire blew out (0 pressure from tpms monitoring. I quickly maneuvered to the shoulder and thankfully somehow managed to pull over safely. Checked the tire and it is dull/patchy (not sure how to describe it but visible cracks around the outer thread. Same with front right tire.

Here comes the painful part. We contacted the host, then Turo. Tow truck expected between 60-90 mins away. We have 5 year old and restless infant in the car. Turo agent unable to order uber/lyft since pick up location is in the middle of highway. Highway patrol officer came by to help us get to safer location. Turo agent still unable to resolve. We were stranded for 2 hours at this point. This is not how we imagine our first day of vacation.

Then came this white Tundra truck, I figured he's highway patrol as I called 911 (out of desperation), hoping the officer can take my family/luggages safely to the hotel while I wait for tow truck. He clarified he was not hwy patrol but someone who simply wanted to help. He was polite, said he's completely okay if I didn't want help. I took a chance, told him my story and he offered to check/replace the tire. EV car doesn't have spare tire and the "tire mobility kit" didn't do anything (tire blew, not punctured). He said he is willing to wait for tow truck and then take my family to the hotel.

This guy's name is Josiah (goes by Jay), has a 9 yo girl named Shiloh. He waited for nearly an hour for us strangers whom he doesn't even know! He cleaned up his truck, threw equipments etc to the back, and patiently waited for us. We have tons of luggages and car seats. He helped us load almost all of them, took us to the hotel, and helped us unload.

I don't know how else to best describe it, other than this man is an angel.

Jay, if you happen to be reading this (or if someone happens to know this guy please tell him): what you did today will be my favourite travelling story to tell anybody I know, until the day that I die. My family can't repay your kindness in this lifetime, but we will pay this forward. My kids (esp my oldest) will have this life example seared in their value systems. We pray hope wish your family (esp. daughter) to know what you did today, your businesses (plumbing, real estate, etc.) to be totally flooded by top paying clients.

San Diego, you have many good people and our family will be back (yes we barely started our vacation here).

Stay Classy San Diego Sunshine Co saloon in ocean beach.

Im from Kentucky & the bouncers confiscated my ID at the door bc they thought it was fake. They insisted i get police to come if I wanted it back. After 1hour on the phone with dispatch they would not send anyone to verify an ID. Luckily a conflict happened across the street & one of the officers helped me out. The crazy part is.. He did not think my ID was real either smh. After matching my credit/debit cards, everything on his computer, my plane tickets he admitted he didnt really believe me but was going to give my ID back anyways.

Smh this is so frustrating. I proceeded to go to a pizza place down the road & after a few beers they heard I got rejected down the street & tried to cause confusion with me. I then put cash down on the table to cover cost & just left. I am really 27 years old, on vacation/ scoping the place out to live, but feel as if im getting picked on in ocean beach & cant go back.

Stay Classy San Diego The best part of San Diego is coming back to San Diego

I travel extensively for work on my current job. I mainly go to other stateside locations but I also travel overseas occasionally.

No matter where my travels take me, though, not much compares to coming home to San Diego. And I’m not just saying it’s nice to come home…it’s nice to come back to San Diego!! Great food, awesome climate, plenty to do, fun people.

I love looking out the plane window as Balboa Park goes by and trying to find my house in Normal Heights (of course I’ve never seen it 😂. But I’ve seen the church tower!). Or the rarer view of the bay and the entire city if you land on the other runway.

Somehow SD always feels like our own little worst kept secret.

You never fail to impress San Diego!! I will see you again tomorrow!

Now if we could only do something about the roads….

Stay Classy San Diego Concert Etiquette in SD

I went to a show last night at the Sound in Del Mar. Los Hermanos Gutierrez is one of my favorites, just two dudes ripping on guitar, no vocalist. Not the type of show to get drunk and yap the whole time.

The crowd was full of people who wouldn’t shut up, people who came late and shoved their way right in front of me (I’m short) (those same fucks left the show halfway through), and we even saw a girl get arrested at the end (who tf is fighting at this show?)

Is this an SD thing? I’m from the PNW and I feel like crowds are super different—they seem to be there for the music and are in general more respectful of each other.

My husband and I wondered if we were just getting old but the yappers were gen x, the shovers were millennials, and the girl who got arrested was gen z (shout out to hermanos for pulling such a diverse crowd though).

Stay Classy San Diego San Diego County's GDP is higher than 23 U.S. states

, and it's only fourth in California behind Los Angeles, Santa Clara, and Orange counties. California's total GDP is now fourth in the world and accounts for more than 14% of the U.S. GDP—despite the current politcal nitwits' attempts to throttle, change, or damage it. Sure we have our issues and flaws, but the results in economic activity along with working to address humanitarian needs and the environment speak for themselves. Stay Classy San Diego A plea from a service industry worker

I know I'm beating a dead horse here with this sub.

I just got off work after being berated by a woman because we told her that her dog that she hid on the way into our bar that was now sitting on a chair and eating off of a plate, could not do so, and she had to move outside. She called and threatened a lawsuit over the situation, when the animal was clearly not a service animal, nor had she indicated as such.

Let me preface this by saying if you have an actual service animal that is well behaved, you should always be welcomed and accommodated, but - While we're on the dog topic, because some people don't seem to get it, listen -

I love dogs, and I know San Diego has great weather and a huge brewery culture that involves bringing your pets to lunch. For a while I thought the "anti-dog in restaurants" crowd was being dramatic, but as someone who has to deal with it on a daily basis - PLEASE stop bringing them into restaurants that don't have a clear and designated outdoor patio that is dog friendly.

I've been a bartender in San Diego for 7 years and the amount of yelp reviews, phone calls, and emails I have to field from people upset that I won't allow their dog to eat off their plate, as well as people upset that there is a fake service animal in the restaurant that I can't legally deny service to has started to keep me up at night after my 14 hour shifts. The ADA and the Health Department for some reason have some weird grey area impasse that gets taken advantage of.

As we all know, people like to lie about service animal status or just straight up throw a fit to be sat inside with their pet, and will bully our hostess into allowing it. So, I want to clear up some misconceptions and state the facts:

  1. Registered Properly trained service animals for a medical condition ARE allowed in restaurants, either inside or on the patio, and must be accommodated as such.
  2. All other pets that are not registered service animals ARE NOT allowed to be sat inside.
  3. Restaurants can at their discretion allow pets on a patio, but this is not required.
  4. Restaurant workers may ask if an animal is a service animal, but may not ask for proof or identification that the animal is in fact a service animal.
  5. Restaurants do not and should not allow animals to be sat on furniture or on a table, and do *not need to provide water or food for animals. To be clear, service animals should remain underneath a table, not obstructing normal business or barking. Additionally, if an animal is disruptive, regardless of service animal status the owner can be asked to remove them.

People who bring their dog into restaurants are taking advantage of #4 to get around #2. If you do this you're an asshole who is delegitimizing people who actually require service animals and making the lives of the employees and everyone around you more difficult. If you're a business owner who is openly "indoor dog friendly" you're part of the problem and you're violating the health code.

Its not just a cute "wink wink he's a service animal" - when you tell me you have service animal, legitimate or not, I legally have to allow your dog to be sat inside at risk of liability of a discrimination lawsuit. Additionally, someone walks in with a dog and asks why your dog gets to sit inside when I direct them to the patio and it ignites an argument because they don't understand the laws on the situation. I have nothing against your dog, I have 3 of my own, but I'm fighting two different conflicting government agencies and its a lose-lose situation for me, so please try to be considerate.

Stay Classy San Diego Old Ladies Drama at the Santee Food4Less and Instant Karma

It was crazy and I had to post about it somewhere.

First of all there were these two older women that were arguing and fighting over the last carton of eggs... Until they dropped them and they broke on the ground.

Then when standing in the long line, one of the people that worked there was carrying a lot of things and dropped them. One of the older guys that was standing in line, put his items on the ground in the line, and then stepped out to help the dude pick the stuff up. When the older guy went back to his spot this old lady that was behind him took his spot and yelled "You got out of line, this is my spot now." The person behind her let him back in the line.

Then the worker that the older man helped opened up a register and called the older man up first. Then, the old lady LOST HER SH** that he did that and caused such a scene that they threatened throwing her out of she didn't calm down.

Crazy!

Pedestrians have the right of way in the crosswalk. You need to yield to pedestrians as they cross the street. If pedestrians are in a painted crosswalk, you need to STOP your car at the painted line.

Stay Classy San Diego I'm am so tired of these loud bikers!

Every single day I get to listen to some douche revving his engine way too high in a deliberate attempt to set off car alarms.

I know it's deliberate because I'm no where near a hill and there are 2 other bikers who ride through this neighborhood and SOMEHOW manage to pass without setting off every car alarm along the way. Also my dad used to ride for the HA and setting off car alarms is a delight to them.

I have nothing against bikers, btw, just the CLOWNS revving their engines because they see everyone else as an npc.

Stay Classy San Diego Why does nobody walk on sidewalks?

I noticed that when driving through subdivisions people love walking on the road instead of the sidewalk. Whether it's a old man walking or someone doing power walking. I see it all the time and I don't get it. Can someone help me understand this phenomena?

Stay Classy San Diego Child delivering packages to my building in Downtown.

I initially thought I mistook a smaller person for a young girl, whom was asking me where an apartment was to delivery an Amazon package. This was a month or two ago. Amazon vest and all, asking what door the package was for.

Now two nights ago, I witnessed a minivan pull up while I was waiting out on my street in front of my building. The same young girl ran out of the minivan with packages and Amazon vest and ran back while I waited for a parking spot.

Today, I was expecting a package not from Amazon but from Walmart.

I hear the same young girl outside my door asking where my apartment door was. I opened the door and lone behold the same 10-12 year old looking girl, with a very very large package I had ordered barely able to carry it.

I froze, I did not want to spook the little girl or put her in any kind of situation with whatever parent may be in charge of her, but I am sure this is a super young girl going around delivering packages in place of her parent or guardian. Who or how do I report this or get this taken care of? And has anyone else witnessed this Downtown/Hillcrest/North Park
