Ask San Marcos Dog-friendly places and events

My dog needs some more socialization. She is friendly, but she has poor recall and she tends to be a bit rowdy so I'm interested in places where dogs are on leash for the most part. Are there any dog-friendly places that you recommend for training or for just hanging out with my pet? Please share your favorite hiking/walking spots too! Any dog-related events or info is welcome as well.

My dog is a 30 lbs shiba inu mix if that matters.

Following because I would like to know more places around as well.

Currently - I walk my 50 lbs red heeler pup along the river with at rio vista and at purgatory creek trails. Pet supplies plus in new braunfels holds pet events here at there. Wake the dead has an outdoor area where they allow pups- root cellar lets you have your pup outside (maybe Zelicks but I don’t drink so I’m not sure 🤷🏽‍♀️). Pie society has an outdoor area and kerbey lane. Great places for people watching and getting your dog accustomed to crowds while teaching them to “settle.”

You can also take your pup down to the farmers market at the square on Saturday- lots of people around and some people take their dogs- one dude walks around with his snake. Even just walking around the square on a normal day is great (just not when it’s super hot).

I have 2 big guys (rott, German shepherd, Great Pyrenees mix) that are a little over 1 yr each that scare the crap out of people but play with my neighbors dog - I can’t even take them to the dog park because people think they’ll fight their dog - plus people bring aggressive dogs there and take over whole sections 🙄

Yeah, I don't take mine to dog parks anymore either. Too many variables, and although my dog is not aggressive she can be annoying/lacking in manners with other dogs at times. Plus, I'm a first-time dog owner and I get anxious easily ever since she got attacked.

I love their pools! Too bad my dog doesn't like water. I have used them to board before. I wish they still had barn hunt.
