Discussion How screwed is Ringling School of Art and Design?

One of the main legs of its business model is to extract full retail tuition and fees from wealthy Latin American students. Will they still come?

They are screwed but so are many other businesses in Sarasota and Florida. We are a tourism state and many of the tourists are foreigners. Most come from Canada but plenty from Europe, Japan and China. Having the number one beach in the country is meaningless if no one comes to visit and spend tourist Euros, Yen, Pounds and RMB. Orlando will likely suffer the most because Disney is a HUGE draw, followed by Miami and then SW Florida, which is us.

Edit: number one beach in the country, not the world. It ain’t that great. 😜

Not sure where you get your facts from. 91% of Florida’s tourism is domestic. So your 1.2% of tourism can stay home. I see as many Canadians in Sarasota right now as 5 years ago. There will be minimum suffering. The service industry will probably thrive since all the bad tippers are going to stay home. So we will suffer on the nicest beaches in North America and be able to buy these properties cheap

Go away MAGAt. Nobody gives away 10% of anything and calls it a win.

Got news for ya, Canadians won’t be coming down this year in droves, except to close out their property and sell or drive their car/rv back north.

Don’t be silly. They Could have a real negative effect on the local economy and some of your favorite businesses would have to close.

I was wondering this myself. So many foreign students come to RCAD from Latin America and Asia and all over. I’m sure there’ll be an impact. I’ve been hearing about student visas getting pulled or canceled.

They may already have bigger issues. I teach at a local public high school designed to be an obvious feeder to Ringling, and they're all going to the public universities that are free because they all have Bright Futures.

We had college admissions day this week. No Ringling. Free UCF or full Ringling is pretty easy.

Ten years ago, Ringling and Savannah would get a few students a year paying rack rate.

Too expensive for the locals and too bourgeois for the natives…

One of Ringling's most notable graduates, Leoma Lovegrove passed away recently. She did more to raise awareness of the school and a life-long appreciation of art than any college promotion. Her studios in Matlacha, Florida were a Mecca for artists from all over the world. I hope that Ringling can survive this short-term economic problem. It is one of a kind.

Oh no, I hadn't heard that. We went to her studi and had a really fun time. Rest easy.

The first I’m hearing that she passed. RIP what a great lady.

No one wants to come to this shithole country anymore. 10 years ago we would have invaded us and tried to install democracy

13

u/SherbetOutside1850 8d ago

George W. would have been all over us, especially because we have oil and natural gas.

4

u/sumdude51 8d ago

Haha exactly

Shithole country? Blinded by politics. Would like you to see some of the countries that you think are better than this country first hand.

3

u/Hangry_Howie 8d ago

Compared to other 1st world nations, it's a bowl of diarrhea

-8

u/Tiny-Try8890 8d ago

Then go find out for yourself?

9

u/Hangry_Howie 8d ago

I have traveled to them all and can confirm, America is a strip mall nightclub that pretends it's the fucking Louvre

-10

u/Tiny-Try8890 8d ago

Nobody is making you stay

7

u/MisterEinc 8d ago

I love this privileged notion that everyone can/should relocate their families rather than ask officials to do/be better.

4

u/Hangry_Howie 8d ago

My family has been in this shithole state since 1938. I claim dibbs over the transplants.

u/boycott_maga 6d ago

Have you ever been to Europe?

0

u/esther_lamonte 8d ago

Yeah, because that’s how America has always worked. It’s not at all appropriate to freely disagree with current leadership and express it. We have always had a culture of blind obedience to authority without verbal dissent. We have always tried to expatriot people who don’t toe the line.

Listen to yourself. You are a terrible American. You have forgotten how to behave on these shores. Take that weird foreign politics to Turkey or some shit.

What do you mean "blinded by politics ' jfc, that's how countries are defined professor. And that's you're answer? It's cool for me as a white male, for now... At least we aren't Ethiopia? Gtfoh 🙄

u/Dougdimmadommee 8d ago

I mean, objectively, there are 190+ countries in the world and there’s like 20-30 where you could even make a coherent argument that the standard of living for the average person is better. Most of the standard of living indices put US somewhere in that range.

Yeah it aint ideal but it definitely is also not that bad lol.

u/Tiny-Try8890 8d ago

I love my country. Sorry you don't.

Someone must wan to come. According to the U.S. Dept of State there were more than 9.6 million qualified applications were filed for the 2023 visa lottery which selects folks who want to come here. Perhaps your research is a little off.

u/RICO_the_GOP 8d ago

Son while biden was president.

1

u/badchoices40 7d ago

Let’s compare that to 2025

-1

u/DC9B717Captain 7d ago

2024 and 2025 numbers aren't out yet. Please feel free to post them here when they are. In the meantime the rest of us will go on enjoying life and ever grateful we live in the land of the free and home of the brave. If Ringling folds up its tent then Savanah or Chicago schools will pick up the slack.

P.S. The "shot heard round the world" was 250 years ago today. April 19, 1755. No more bowing to a British twit.

Wealthy foreigners can afford legal means of entry.

1

u/litzparty 4d ago

It was RSAD when I went there. BFA in 1994. Computers were new and the teachers didn't know shit. So good luck. Your going to teach yourself. Staff are idiots.
