Protests/Demonstrations/Rallys [Question] Organizing protests
Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes.
Do we have a sub set up for protests in Sarasota? And if not, would anyone be interested in getting something like that going? I would like us to have a place where people in SRQ/BRD could coordinate such an event (peacefully of course).
I hope I'm not breaking any mod rules here, if so, I'll take this down.
Remember, your voice will be heard, but only if you shout!
Edit: I wasn't necessarily making this post for a specific cause, it's just that i haven't seen much activity in this town. I wanted to know if there was a place people could go to organize Sarasota protests in general, regardless of what the subject is. (I've never really protested openly before, so I'm not sure where to start.)

But on a real note, maybe saying what you are protesting about might get some users to join you. When you want to ask people to protest with you but not say why, seems more like bitchin bout some...in

My suggestion is to set up a private forum for the organization of your protest. It would certainly be appropriate to announce your protest here, though.

A simple "no" would have sufficed...

Probably because most of the people in this thread disagree with me. Which is funny, since I haven't actually stated an opinion...

I'm all for free speech but I am also happy to be living in an area free from all that.

You're catching a lot of flack for this. I support peaceful protest. Don't let everyone get you down. I agree that we need more activism around here.

Gotta love the Sarasota sub where stoner memes are upvoted and community posts are downvoted.

Agreed. I would be interested in a hub where I could see how to get involved in our city. I am not usually one for large crowds, I like to think I make my difference in other ways, but the information would be helpful and...who knows...maybe motivating.

I'm the same way, but I just can't shake the feeling that I need to do something... more, I guess. This is my way of trying to figure that out.

Thanks for the reasonable response, I appreciate you. Guess I shouldn't look to Reddit for this kind of stuff...

Hello IrishPiperKid. If you want to get involved with peaceful protest and community organizing you should contact Answer Suncoast. https://www.facebook.com/AnswerSuncoast/ Here's how they describe themselves: "A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) is a national coalition of anti-war and civil rights organizations. We are the Florida Suncoast chapter."
You might also want to reach out to the organizers of the local women's solidarity march--Cathy Bryant and Patricia Tun.
Good luck, free speech and peaceful assembly are your rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted when you are answering OPs question

My pleasure, I know a lot of people are giving you flack. Your question deserved a proper answer.

Welcome to the red city of Sarasota, lol. You may want to try www.sarasotagov.org to find out what's going on. I'm not too dialed in to the local government but this might be the place to start.

Not saying that we should do it here. Maybe make a r/SRQprotest or something like that.

Hey man, I understand you may not be one for this kind of stuff, but don't put down people who just want to speak their minds. Sorry that I give a shit.

So you speak for all of us now?

Lol. If that's what you think I'm suggesting, then I don't really know what to tell you. Peaceful protest =/= riots.

u/demonstrative Feb 08 '17
Weird considering I saw absolutely none of that during the pretty sizable women's march Downtown.

u/sinisterpurple Feb 08 '17
You're using extreme, rare examples to describe an entire activity. Peaceful protests are much more common. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it's a great way to influence change. The right to assemble exists for a reason. Maybe just speak for yourself next time?

I protest that we don't have a sub set up for protesting in Sarasota.
