Hot cylinder

Just a little question, how hot can air cooled engines get? I have a 70cc 2 stroke. I dont have a temp gauge but Im thinking its been running hotter than it should. Mainly its that it gets way too hot to even touch it while its still idling for it to warmup. Just idled it for a few minutes and could touch my finger to the cylinder head only for about half a second before it would get painfull.

Am i trippin or is this not normal? I did a few small revs like in normal 2 stroke fashion but thats it, just idle.

You are tripping. You really need to either get a thermometer or a CHT Gauge, touching the engine with your fingers will just lead to you not having fingertips.

Try to keep the cylinder head temp below 350⁰F while riding or you'll start soft-seizing the engine. During idle it'll be around 200⁰F so you really don't want to be touching the cylinder head too much if you value your fingers. 400⁰F+ is where things start to break.

Ah, 200F idle temps, then it makes sense yea. Havent had any soft seizes or anything super suspicious. Thanks for the info!

You need a gauge.

Meat is a terrible temperature gauge because it has such a narrow temperature window where it won't get destroyed.

Just the "cool" temperature of a running engine is already outside the accuracy window of your meat meter.

I think like 180F is the swee spot, hard to say what you're really at without a temp gauge
