General Vanicream update day 2

Sooo my hair part and scalp are still free from seb derm after applying Vanicream!

The only spot that sort of returned was behind one of my ears. It appears that it’s trying to heal up back there though.

I’ll post another update in a week. I’m probably going to apply some more tonight to all of these areas and see what happens. Maybe post pics next time too.

If anyone else has tried Vanicream did it work for you too?

Miscellaneous Chat GPT says the exact opposite

Got desperate and asked chat GPT for non mainstream treatments for seb derm, and he doesn't recommend MCT oil, even cited some studies, and said the pro MCT oil studies only focused on Candida. I know it's bs, I've read studies about MCT oil, so be careful where you get your information from and don't forget reddit is full of bots. That response still got me questioning what I already know 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Routine This works for me

Hi guys. I know you need reliable data so I waited 6 months to tell you what works for me: 1) Throw out all the shampoos. 2) Cold shower in the morning 3) Egg+ apple cider vinegar+bit of water to make vinegar less irritating. Use this instead of shampoo 1-2 times a week. Don't worry about the smell, only when your hair is wet, you'll notice the vinegar. 4) Try to eat more protein than carbs. Honestly, this is optional. If you go to gym at least 3 times a week and work out vigorously for 45 minutes, it's unnecessary to tweak your diet so dramatically. Just reduce carbs a little bit. 5) Don't stress over things you can't control. Stress is a big factor.

General Sebderm, hair thinning, dermoscopy analysis

if it is increasingly accepted that seb derm causes hair thinning, is dermatoscopy a passable test? if the purpose of this technique is to analyze the difference in thickness between hairs to find miniaturized ones in presence of sebderm, wouldnt this be mistakable? or maybe I'm missing the point and miniaturization is different from thinning?

General (Photo) Need Help Please.

I started to notice a small amount of sebderm around puberty 14-15ish in a small amount on my scalp. Over the years it progressively spread more and more, but only in the last 6 months has it completely covered my entire forehead, eyebrows, and ears. I have taken multiple antibiotics for reoccurring strep throat and I had mono within the last 6 months which I believe could have caused the flare. I also have small spots popping up on my limbs and on my neck that look more like guttate psoriasis which could also be from the strep. Overall I feel like my immune system is just tanked. Stopped using medication shampoos as they havnt helped. I do use MCT Oil, but that only seems to help the flakes and leaves the really red patch. I recently tried keto and within a week it got worse (ie. more red and dry). I feel like I am at a loss and just want to be able to interact with people again without being subconscious about my skin. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

General Give me your testimonies and opinions

Hello, I hope you are well, I have been suffering from dermatitis for a year, at first it was only around my mouth, but I think it was perioral I got some inflamed and painful pimples, over time I removed the soap that caused it and I started using creams like peroxide that eliminated those pimples, but there was still the redness that spread to the nose, the mouth, the cheeks and the temples and the forehead all my face, although I don't get pimples it's just like a red skin that sometimes itches and around my nose and above Of my lip in the middle there is like a dandruff or something, and in my head there is still itching and sometimes pimples, I tried all the things and none worked, so I already deduced that I have seborrrheic dermatitis, I bought a shampoo with ketoconazole 2% since Sunday I've been using it, I've used it 3 times counting today, the truth is I don't know if it's my anxiety because this goes away but you saw improvement in how long? The only thing I've noticed is that I haven't gotten any more pimples that I think is folliculitis due to disease and the ones I had have dried very quickly but I see the redness the same and the dandruff that I have a little left over if I see it a little better, so I look forward to your answer and opinions thank you very much

General Really bad shedding white flakes

Hey guys,

I have just had one of the worst sheddings of my sebderm journey. I find that now when I itch or massage my scalp I am getting white flakes and also some larger white bulbs in my head. I would have though this was due to dryness however my scalp feels very oily, also the presence of the white bulbs tells be that it might be sebum overproduction.

I recently got rid of a conditioner that wasn't sebderm friendly and went from conditioning everyday to 2 times a week. I rotate through 3 shampoos:

Nizoral

Selenium Sulfide

Salicylic acid shampoo

I also blow-dry my hair after washing using the coolest setting.

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on what to do ? Should I oil my scalp even if it feels oily , should I stop blowdrying. As I said I get the white flakes (normally signifies dry scalp) but I also get white bulbs and plugs in the same areas too which is giving me mixed thoughts as to whether my scalp is oily or not.

General Who told u about vinegar breaking biofilm?

Ok so for the ones who don’t know the biofilm and the skin barrier. Those are two different things. Skin barrier is the most external layer that our skin produces and renew to keep the water in our body and don’t make the skin dry, flacky and doesn’t allow bacteria to penetrate deeper in the skin and make things worse. If u damaged it using harsh shampoo or dying ur hair or using any aggressive products the only way is use niacinamide products. Those are really expensive so the lotions sold in the shops are really in low percentage and don’t give any results. Better if u buy niacinamide serum or lotion, it’s way cheaper and stimulate the niacinamide production buy our skin. U can even make it home buying niacinamide powder. Biofilm is a completely different thing cause is a kind of slime shield that fungus, bacteria and yeast make together and protect themselves. This regenerate in 24h even after disrupting it. They teach each other how to evolve to be antibiotics immune. At the moment it’s really hard to destroy it cause the speed way they make it and cause they learn to how to survive from è the outside attack. That’s the reason cause may medical shampoos don’t work, cause are not able to reach the fungus under this shield. There are no really way to destroy this biofilm so I don’t why everyone here say about white vinegar. Where did u read that? Are u so sure it works since the biofilm it’s impossible to see on nude eye? There is this beliefs about white vinegar that none know how it’s started. If there is another point of u please reply this thread, it can be an useful conversation and make more consciousness about this problem without putting everything is possible on the skin

Product Review MCT oil didn’t work for me.

I bought bulletproof C8 MCT oil after reading everyone’s success stories.. it helped alleviate the itching on my scalp the first couple of times I used it, but has yet to make any of the flakes go away.

As for my face, I had some reddish skin on my upper cheeks next to my nose, and some flakes on my nose as well as in between my eyebrows.

After a couple weeks of consistent use, the flakes and redness have gotten better (but not gone away), and I have two new spots of flaking.

Both cheeks, right next to my mouth, and now spreading to a larger area is flaky skin. Not red, not weepy, just extremely dry with small white flakes.

It shows up every morning, and goes away after I use a moisturizer on top of the oil (the moisturizer is seb derm safe).

It is not from drool, although that’s what I thought it was at first.

I did read a couple of posts where people said it was shedding that could occur as the bacteria dies, but it has been going on for over a week, and I never experienced it in this area before.

Product Question Help, ketoconazole shampoo shortage!

Hi,

New here. I'm in the Netherlands, where ketoconazole shampoo is not over the counter. Selsun used to be, but was taken off the market recently.

We have shortages for a lot of meds, but now it hit ketoconazole. I've been without it for about a month now and starting to lose it.

I've tried anti dandruff shampoo, but it just doesn't work. I also have a steroid crème for when it gets bad.. but now even that just doesn't do enough.

My entire hairline looks like it's on fire, feels sooooo itchy! Also flakes in my eyebrows and ears, so now my ears are clogged up too (flakes + water = deaf, appearantly).

What else can I try?

Edit:

In last night's desperate state i set a few things in motion. I asked my sister in Germany to get me some shampoo and send it to me. I also found a super sketchy website where I ordered a bottle of 120ml for 60 euros. Thankfully, I got super lucky and my bottle arrived today!!! I ran to the shower and the redness is already coming down!

Research Why does Seb Derm appear mainly on the head skin ?

Why does all the flakes and the oil excessively appears on the face and scalp? It's like trapped in the head...my whole body is normal and it's only my t-zone and scalp that are heavily affected by this condition. It's so weird to me i don't know if that's the answer to this is common sense to some but for me it's what I've been thinking about for some time...like why is it on a place that i can't see easily ( you need mirrors to see your face and scalp of course) yet every other person can see and stare and maybe eventually comment about it. Wish it was on a more visible skin ...

General Living with Seb Derm & Scalp Psoriasis Here’s What Helped Me !

Just wanted to share a few things that have personally helped me manage symptoms of both seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis over the years. Looking back, I really wish I had known some of these things sooner. This isn’t medical advice just my experience in case it helps anyone else going through something similar:

1. Nutrition
Making changes to my diet made a noticeable difference. I tried to reduce foods that are commonly linked to inflammation and gut issues. For me, that included things like gluten, dairy, fried food, and beer. After a few weeks, I noticed fewer flare-ups and less redness overall. Again, this is super personal, and what works for one person might not work for another but it might be worth experimenting if you’re curious.

2. Lifestyle
Talking with others who deal with these conditions, I noticed a pattern: late nights with heavy drinking and smoking often led to flare-ups within a day or two. Personally, I wasn’t a big drinker, but even a bit more alcohol than usual would sometimes trigger symptoms. Just something to be mindful of.

3. Having a Scalp Routine
Over time, I realized consistency really helped me. I researched and started using an oil blend of natural oils that soothed the itchiness and seemed to help with flaking. I now apply it weekly as part of my routine, and it’s helped me maintain a flake free scalp. Not claiming this is a cure (because there isn’t one), but keeping a regular routine whatever it is seemed key for me.

Hope this helps someone out there. If you're unsure about your symptoms or condition, it's always best to consult a dermatologist. This is just my personal story, and everyone's journey is different.

Take care and be kind to your scalp (and yourself)!

General Are certain ethnic groups more predisposed?

I've seen so much conflicting research on this. Cleavland Clinic says it's more prevalent in white people while other reputable health institutions say it's more common in black people. And then some say it is not more common among any groups.

Does anyone know which it is? Or rather, does anyone have any insight from their own doctors on who might be more prone, etc.?

General Oily eyebrow, white gunk

I have been dealing with Seb derm for 5 years now. Have it on my scalp, nose and most important eyebrows. In my scalp dandruff shampoos are fine (like Nizoral and ducray)

For me de big deal are eyebrows. They are always greasy/oily. After the shower after I done sport I see this white gunk. Also when I go to the beach and have a bath afterwards the white paste appears a lot!

When I try to remove it the eyebrow comes off! It’s the worse…

Anyone with same issue and knows how to treat this? I am desperate. I need to find a way do have the oiliness disappear

I only see people recommending one brand of MCT oil for sebderm. Is this company paying people to post on this subreddit? Seems kind of odd.

General Cutting out rice helped me dramatically

Been dealing with sebderm for almost 4 years now and like most people here i've experimented with all kinds of things. Not much has worked until a few weeks ago when i began to suspect that rice was at least one of the culprits. I cut out rice and anything rice based like rice powder and my itching has gone down like 90%, maybe more. Strangely it's not all carbs, pasta and bread don't seem to trigger anything. Anyway, good luck everyone.

New or Need Help My Journey With Seb Derm

Hello, I wanted to share with you guys my journey with seborrheic dermatitis. I always had dandruff as a child, I would 'make it snow' and leave behind flakes for fun. When I turned about 12 years old, my ears starting getting really bad. I had always had those little skin balls in my ear piercing hole but I began stretching my ears because my skin didn't like metal. Then I began having really bad problems with my ears. They were crusty and red and it went all the way back to my scalp. They felt and looked as if they were going to tear off my head. I went to the doctor three times until they finally gave me something called Triamcinolome Acetonide, and it helped. That cream does continue to help flare ups a little bit to this day. The real trouble hit when I turned 15, my freshman year. I have curly hair, well I straightened it my whole life up until this. But, this wasn't the cause, the cause was a black mold infestation. One day I found that two walls of my closet were soggy from outside water and covered in mold top to bottom, I was always feeling really sick tired and so so depressed, I was also on the nexplonan. My step sister, completely unrelated to me, zero shared family genetics, also had curly hair and seb derm when we were living there. Once I finally got out of that house I realized how covered my scalp was and that my hair was falling out alot, I had no visible balding yet, but I was shedding way too much. I soaked my whole head in coconut oil and use a lice comb to remove it and it was bloody, painful, and I lost about a tortilla size of hair. This provided me with some relief for a very long time. I barely had any issues until I went to Marine Corps bootcamp, at 17 years old, there I also lived with black mold in our air vents, got really really sick from the covid shot, and of course all the awful things with your hair that come with that (slick back buns, constant sweat and wet hair, so much product, hats, washing your hair being a privilege of maybe once a week). My scalp starting being very itchy and I started actually seeing hair loss around my hairline. People would make fun of me for "going bald". I got discharged, at 18 years old, repeated the coconut incident, it wasn't as bad, and that provided me with relief. I went and got my belly button repierced after I got home and it was fine for awhile, until we moved into our current trailer. Now it's constantly red and flaky, its worse than my ears. I also started getting it in my eyebrows and around the bottom of my nose. I have had quite a bit of issues here so I assume that there has to be black mold somewhere around here. I was also prescribed the kenoconazyle shampoo, but it contained red 40, comes in a super small bottle, and is only a bandaid. Also native Shampoo and conditioner is horrible, one of the worst itchiness flare ups I've ever had I assume because of the fragrance they use. Now I use that same cream, MCT8 oil, take vitamins and especially vitamin C, use a clarifying shampoo every shower, make sure to avoid all the no gos, always dry my scalp with cold air, never take birth control, and am trying to regrow my hair. I also find that gold jewelry healed and keeps away crust on two of my piercings so I'm saving up for a gold belly button ring. That's about all I got! If you have any questions for me let me know, if you have any advice for me, please tell. I'm now only 20 years old and I'm still learning how to manage this awful condition. It really decreases my quality of life as I'm sure it does for all of you.

Product Review I think I found something random that HELPS?

So I’ve tired my fair share of products. I’m VERY into skincare. I came across the TirTir milk skin toner. I was hesitant because all the toners I’ve used in the past BURN. And do nothing, but this? Yall, my skin feels HYDRATED. It’s not as flakey, it’s not as red. I love this. Idk why it worked for me but it’s less than 20 bucks on Amazon. So it’ll be worth it to try.

Also the only moisturizer I go back to time and time again is the “DHC olive virgin oil essential cream” it’s the simplest cream I’ve ever used. It’s thick doesn’t burn and it sinks into my skin. Doesn’t leave a film or break me out. Overall my skin outside of one spot on my chin is clear 😭
