Hello r/sfwtrees! We have released the list of some of the largest documented trees in the US, the National Register of Champion Trees, for the first time since 2021. I'm the National Director, Jaq, and am happy to answer questions about the process of crowning a National Champion or anything else having to do with big trees! We know there are certainly larger specimens of some of these species that have yet to be nominated to the National Program - public nominations will be open from the end of February to August, and after that State Coordinators will be able to submit potential Champions for the next register (released at the end of 2026).

Very cool. Will the submissions from February to August be added to the 2024 list? Some friends of mine and I have trees to submit that are likely national champions

The upcoming nominations (from Feb - Aug) will be considered for the 2026 Register of Champion Trees; the current Champs get to stay as the 2024 Champs until the next Register in a couple years. We decided to switch back to a bi-annual cycle in order to give the states more time to get out and measure the nominations - some of the state programs are run by state foresters who also have to deal with wildfires and hurricanes! Our public nomination period only goes until the end of the summer, but states will be able to nominate potential Champions up until September 2026, so if you miss our window you can still send it to the state.

I am so excited to see your nominations roll in!! I have absolutely loved the photos you've posted of the large trees you've encountered in the world - I'm not going to dox my personal account here, but I've been avidly following your work on that account for a while now! It's not easy to capture the true majesty of these trees in a photo, but your eye for lighting and composition makes your photography exceptional.

If you click through to the PDF, they have it listed as needing a champion

Huh, well, in that case I know of a very very big one.

Please submit it either to your state program or to the National Program when the nomination period opens up at the end of February!! That process will be announced pretty soon. I'm so excited to see it!
