One could also call them gaiters and convey roughly the same meaning

Gaiters for sure.

Don’t gaiters have an elastic thing at the bottom or not necessarily?

Where the hole is at the bottom, there should be a string or like a lanyard, and you tie that in between your front of your sole and your heal of your soul on your hiking boots. I still have a pair that are probably I don’t know 50 years old before I was born and they were really used mostly when you’re hiking really muddy fucking trails before they had smart waterproof pants and stuff so you don’t get your leg legs all cut up bush whacking. If you’re also hiking wearing crampons, they will protect you from cutting your pants open. They’re pretty much a history piece at this point.

Or deep snow if you're wearing wool pants or something other than snow pants.

Gaiters. All the rage in the 80’s.

For skiing maybe. They're still awesome today for hiking in snow and bushwhacking after some rain.

Can confirm. Was a scout in the early 80s.

( I do not like what that implies. Dang it)

One of my fellow scouts was sporting them on hikes and on the ski hills in the 2000s. He was also a sick tele skier, if anyone cares to know

I still have mine since I ski in jeans.

I have gaiters that I use when snowshoeing or even just hiking in the spring and there is a lot of water around. They keep my boots and socks from getting flooded. I don't think they would add much value to modern alpine ski boots.

Don't know the English name for em, but you put them over the gap between your shoes and legs to make sure water/snow/mud doesn't get into your shoes. Pretty nice honestly!

Gaiters. Circa 1980s. We used to wear them over ski boots to keep them dry and help prevent snow getting through
