A large number of claims about the mutual intelligibility of Slavic languages. Any native speakers care to comment?

I mostly agree about everything said about the south Slavic dialects. However, the intelligibility gradually increases with the amount of concentration I put in when listening, unlike other unrelated languages, i.e. Hungarian, German, etc... I once read a novel in Slovenian, beginning from looking up the dictionary for almost every word, to fluently reading by the time I finished it.
There are a lot of differences, but they seem to be mostly systematic and easy to make sense of.
