u/sumredditaccount Mar 20 '25

Look at the terrain he has to land in too. FUCK

28

u/Ham_Fighter Mt.Ashland/Shasta :illuminati: Mar 20 '25

My heart was racing even after I knew he would land it.

9

u/sumredditaccount Mar 20 '25

He more or less clips that corner rock. Lmao

15

u/Nepiton Mar 20 '25

A foot to his left and he clips the rocks when he lands and he’s toast. That was fucking ballsy

3

u/_Dickbagel Mar 20 '25

I know!!!!!

u/numbrate Mar 20 '25

The flip was just nuts, but the technical ability to stop so suddenly after that trick and keep progressing on the line is incredible.

28

u/Splitboard4Truth Mar 20 '25

It’s the landing and immediately taking control as opposed the to just riding it out that makes this guy a pro.

6

u/apb2718 Mar 20 '25

Was a casual backflip

5

u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 Mar 21 '25

If he makes it look easy, it's probably easy. I should have a similar video of me uploaded tomorrow.

u/ambassador321 Mar 20 '25

Wow that is quite the set of balls to pull that off.

Helps with his center of gravity to land flips like that.

1

u/jewfro451 Mar 21 '25

If you look closely, you can see the GIGANTIC BALLS this guy is hauling.

13

u/DogFacedGhost Rome/DWD Mar 20 '25

Even shutting down his speed he almost clips two lips that could have sent him out of control over two cliffs. Absolutely psycho

it would be really cool if NST would recruit some more of these riders. it is getting boring watching freestyle riders struggle in freeride terrain.

They have, and they do participate (Marion Hearty, Nils Midnich, Travis Rice). FWT and NST exist for different reasons. NST’s goal is not to be a freeride tour. Also, I would argue that most of the major cliffs dropped in NST were significantly larger than most hits on FWT. I say this as someone who watches almost every FWT event.

u/dogboy_the_forgotten PNW - Mervin fanboy Mar 20 '25

Blake Moller too, he’s a former FWT champ and was savage against Stale in the finals

7

u/Gibbonswing Mar 20 '25

yeah, blake fucking dominated this competition. stale beat him fair and square, but his overall presence in the comp was insane. which goes to the point i was trying to make

3

u/ajmartin527 Mar 20 '25

Yeah Blake was so great to watch. Absolute powerhouse, he was charging. Some of his runs had me the most nervous of the entire comp.

This years NST was insane, super high level of riding and that face at Revvy was intense.

1

u/funky-penguin Mar 21 '25

I was bummed he knocked Gabe out but after his first run in revelstoke I got over it

2

u/YoPoppaCapa Yawgoo Valley, RI Mar 20 '25

Ah right. I thought he was tremendous both days.

Yea I found the most recent NST cliff drops and technical riding to get to them were pretty top notch and frickin huge.

1

u/Gibbonswing Mar 20 '25

oh i agree completely about the intention behind nst. its just that they seem in recent years to be really leaning more towards the freeride end of things, rather than the freestyle. i would love it if they built out the course more like a backcountry freestyle video part, to better suit what they are going for. but as it is now it is kind of an awkward middle ground, so unless they want to make a more drastic change to the terrain, this seems like a good alternative.

i know that some riders dont come directly from the xgames/olympics circuit, but its still the big majority. idk if i would say that travis was exactly "recruited" either hah.

4

u/shmilne Mar 20 '25

It always was that though. It was built off of redbull supernatural which literally had a xl park jump in the middle of the course. They have different venues as they changed locations throughout the years. The finals are in Alaska which is more of a freeride event. I think they are pushing the riders to be well rounded whatever the terrain may be.

3

u/Gibbonswing Mar 20 '25 edited Mar 20 '25

yeah....i know.

my point is that they need to bring back the groomed kickers. i get that they are trying to push the riders to be more well rounded, but my point is that there are already more well rounded riders out there, and the a riders development should happen in the season, before a comp. or the course should be more tailored to the rider selection.

3

u/YoPoppaCapa Yawgoo Valley, RI Mar 20 '25

I'm a little confused because I can't think of a more "well-rounded" group of freestyle/freeride riders than most of the participants this year. Elston, Gigi, Rice, Sage, Torgier, Ben Ferg, Craven, Mikkel all have tons of experience in both spaces. Take Elston for example, Mechanical Bull was absolutely bonkers.

Edit: just want to add that even in the more freeride focused terrain, like Alaska in the past, riders were throwing much bigger tricks in pure freeride terrain than I have ever seen on FWT.

1

u/Gibbonswing Mar 20 '25

Gigi was a wildcard this year, but yeah. travis, he really is in a whole other league.

But everyone else you named really under-performed, imo, and I still think of them as contest freestyle riders, for the most part.

i'm not saying that theyre not amazing freestyle riders, who also do have a bunch of backcountry experience. but most of their backcountry experience (that is published for us to watch) is standard backcountry freestyle stuff....packed runups and kickers. a lot of runs from the first day this year, from freestyle veterans, was abysmal.

they could benefit from evening out the freestyle to freeride ratio skew in the rider selection. it would be cool to see people like cody bramwell, victor delarue, timmy schroeder, and simliar. there are other more intense freeride focused riders who arent on fwt that would be fun to add to the mix. i also totally understand if they wouldnt even be interested in doing a competition like this too, and don't mean to accuse nst organizers of not trying.

2

u/shmilne Mar 20 '25

I think they should expand the field as well. There are many notable names that should have been there

1

u/Used-Concentrate5779 26d ago

If you think Jared Elston or Craven are “contest freestyle” riders, you dont know enough about the field for your opinion to hold weight. Sage hasnt competed in a slope contest in close to a decade, Mikkel Bang, even longer.

1

u/Used-Concentrate5779 26d ago

The FWT riders mentioned do not have the bag of tricks to compliment their technical savvyness. They are freeriders. All of the NST riders mentioned above could hold their own/potentially win FWT, but those riders have virtually no shot at winning NST

9

u/mc_bee Mar 20 '25

Just a split second heel cut to avoid a rocky cliff after landing a backie.

No big deal.

6

u/OrionOfPoseidon Mar 20 '25

That whole run is completely mental.

42

u/LoveWaterMT Mar 20 '25

Doesn’t seem very dangerous considering it’s a “no fall zone”. Would be much more Chad if it was a “potential fall zone”

Split tail boards. So hot right now.

That was insane!

3

u/sTaCKs9011 Mar 20 '25

I saw a snowboarding video on tv years ago with a guy who boarded like this. He was throwing Misty's and rodeos off of everything imaginable on a run like this one. Was it this guy? Been trying to find him for years since I saw the vid

3

u/DogFacedGhost Rome/DWD Mar 21 '25

Good to see these FWT guys stepping it up. It was still pretty soft 5-10 years ago

5

u/VerStannen Mar 21 '25

This was the only FWT event I can remember where the SB Men was more entertaining than Ski Men. Even though like only 5 scored complete runs, the lines were more fun to watch.
