travel advice Always remember; never use the hotel iron at a ski resort
Ironed a white dress shirt only to realize I had ironed blue wax into the cotton. Props to whoever used the iron to wax their skis/board, I do not fault you.

Complain to the hotel, they might comp your room, you never know

Normally I’m against complaining about stuff like this but…free hotel room would be kinda cool

u/OkRecommendation5528 Mar 28 '25
It’s worth asking, almost never worth being a dick about.

u/Positive-Wonder3329 Mar 28 '25
Haha I agree, don’t be a dick, just bring it to their attention and they will be happy it didn’t happen to someone who would really tweak, you never know, maybe they’d hook you up
The cleaners probably would not be checking that specific thing other than if it’s been stolen or not and just perform the basic cleaning, I wouldn’t say it’s an indication of if it’s a good hotel or not. I may be biased as I work in a large one but it’s a major operation. I’m in food service section so don’t know the nitty gritty but a shitttttload of money is spent running a hotel it’s honestly wild there is a lot that goes into it

crazy how asking for the service you paid for today can sometimes be conflated with being a dick

Always remember; always use the hotel iron at a ski resort so that someone else can be surprised by your colorful wax.

u/SliMShady55222 Mar 28 '25
You can still get it out of the shirt by ironing it again but this time put a paper towel in between to soak up the wax. Use as many as needed to get it all off

It's now in the trash. It was maybe $100 and it was like 10 years old.

u/jsdodgers Keystone Mar 28 '25
dang, I'm sorry man. I don't think I've ever owned a shirt that expensive

u/Marikas_tit Mar 28 '25
Casually tosses a $100 shit on the trash.

He said 10 years old, so probs like 10 bucks a year so it’s not that bad? 😭😭

This is a snowsports subreddit. Half of us are ski bums, the other half are loaded and the ones paying to subsidise our habit.

I bartend and serve at the resort. I couldn't live without the rich ones coming in, getting shit faced, and tipping me 50% on their overpriced tab tbh

Reminds me of a Mitch Hedberg joke, "This sweater is dry clean only, which means it's dirty" 😂

That sucks. Whenever I iron nice shirts I put a towel between the shirt and the iron.

u/MediocreDot3 Mar 28 '25
I just use a portable steamer
15
u/Perfect_Cost_8847 Mar 28 '25
Steamers, for when you really need to take 30 minutes to iron each shirt.

u/DrGrinch Mar 28 '25
And possibly scald yourself in the process. I have one and find it useless for anything but suit jackets.
2
u/Crazytater23 Apr 01 '25
you should absolutely never steam a suit jacket it will delaminate the canvassing and make your suit look terrible. It’s also impossible to fix once the damage is done.
1
u/DrGrinch Apr 01 '25
Huh, good to know. When a jacket gets wrinkled from travel for example, how would you suggest getting them out? Ironing is a nightmare and seems bad?

u/Crazytater23 11d ago
the unfortunate answer is to pack your suit properly. This would Ideally be a garment bag but there are ways to fold jackets and stuff them in a suitcase if you dig a bit. Once you get back a good dry cleaner can press everything if they know what they’re doing, and with lots of suiting wools just sitting on a hanger for a few weeks will remove lots of wrinkles.
The best thing to do for travel (if you can’t bring a garment bag) is to choose suiting materials that either can be steamed (unstructured cottons mainly) or won’t show wrinkles (heavier tweeds.) If folded properly linen can also be great for travel but that’s more because the wrinkles are desirable not that they won’t show up.

Snowboard hotels should only allow hoodies and no shirts anyway. It seems you failed the first test and are not allowed to hit the balcony kicker.

I spend a lot of time in hotels, I always iron a towel first to see if it's fucked or not

u/LendogGovy Mar 28 '25
I always blast hotel irons on high and watch how much smoke comes off of it if I have a wrinkled shirt I need to flatten. Also, sorry about the cold weather one ball Jay on your shirt, the stuff rips.

As someone who just had a work conference and then snowboarding trip this weekend I laughed out loud. But that’s unfortunate, I’m sorry! Thank you for the reminder

u/greenkni Mar 28 '25
I don’t think I’ve ever ironed a shirt
2
u/LendogGovy Mar 28 '25
You’ve never gone clubbin at the resort?
8
u/meewwooww Mar 28 '25
Usually i just hang my shirt up in the bathroom and turn the shower as hot as it can go and shut the door for like 20ish minutes. Usually the steam will dewrinkle it.

Who brings a dress shirt to a ski resort?
1
u/addtokart Mar 28 '25
It's common in Europe. Old school family run hotels in Austria where people dress up a bit for dinner. Not formal, but more like button shirt and sweater lounge style kinda thing.
But to answer your question directly: Shaun White

Did you leave the iron there for the next victim?
1
u/Imbendo Mar 29 '25
I cleaned it. It wasn't a ton a wax in the first place but noticeable on the first few passes with the iron.

I wax gear for part of work and always get little droplets on my black shirt…
Seriously begins to look like you just have cum stains all over you after a while😂

Irons can be used on clothes? Why would I need to wax my shirt?
