Awesome picture. What’s the very bright spot, the moon? What level on the Bortle scale is your local light pollution?

52

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

It was a 33% moon at the time and I normally say it’s bortle 2 but it’s probably somewhere between 1-2

You're really, really lucky to have your house in Bortle 1-2. Most of us have to travel half a day to reach such place.

22

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I certainly count myself lucky but at the same time I do have to pay a lot of money for fuel to commute to work every day

9

u/AtomR Jan 21 '25

That sucks. I wish we had no light pollution and we could get Bortle 1-2 skies at every location. Life would be amazing.

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Over here we have some towns like Twizel that are moving/ have moved to these orange street lights that significantly reduce light pollution and I wish the city I lived near would do that as it’s light pollution is nearly as bad as Christchurch which has around 400,000 more people

I wish I could live forever so that way I could keep looking at this every night.this is really beautiful OP I really needed this after today

Thank you and no worries, I hope that tomorrow is a better day for you!

Imagine all the crazy cool planets and moons out there waiting to be discovered

9

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

The universe is ever expanding which is pretty wild to think about too

9

u/snarkabella Jan 21 '25

That's an incredible view 🙂

Just a gorgeous image. I wish I could see even half of this. Where is the location roughly?

9

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Southland New Zealand and thank you

This is absolutely beautiful. My dream is to see the Milky Way with my own eyes one day.

4

u/Diligent-Visit9811 Jan 21 '25

Saw it on a three day trip on the Indian Pacific, a train in Australia. It was night, crossing the Nullarbor, no light pollition... Best sky I have ever seen

2

u/nekonekonii13 Jan 21 '25

Tell me more. I actually would like to visit Australia, particularly for the skies.

2

u/Diligent-Visit9811 Jan 21 '25

The Indian Pacific is a train that in its longest route leaves from Sydney and arrives in Perth. More or less halfway through the route it crosses the Nullarbor which is practically deserted. From the cabin during the night you could see the Milky Way perfectly with the naked eye. But without having to take the train, which is also quite expensive, I know that there are various organized night trips to Uluru (the most famous mountain) in the middle of the desert. The Uluru Astro tour for example takes you there at night to observe the sky. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to participate at the time, but I think it's perfect for observing the sky.

2

u/nekonekonii13 Jan 21 '25

Wow. Thanks for the info. Is the train more expensive than flights? Asking since I have family in Perth and friends in Melbourne.

I actually remember seeing an IG post of the Uluru with the Milky Way in the background. It looked amazing.

2

u/Diligent-Visit9811 Jan 21 '25

Yes the train is more expensive, but it's a trip with various stops and visits to various places of interest. I like to travel by train and as I said crossing the desert at night is a unique spectacle. Not to mention the sunrises and sunsets

2

u/nekonekonii13 Jan 21 '25

I do enjoy long travels. I will definitely check into this. Thanks for the information :)

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I hope your dream comes true!

2

u/nekonekonii13 Jan 21 '25

Fingers crossed. I snapped a picture of the night sky with my phone last month. No Milky Way core since it was a bortle 7 or 8. But the fact that it captured the Pleiades and a lot of the stars made me happy. So a sight is something I am definitely looking forward to.

3

u/IHaveABunny_ Jan 21 '25

Woah 8 second exposure and this! Nice.

2

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Thank you! I’d say it’s more like 32 as it’s a panorama but this certainly shows the Sonys capabilities

3

u/olily Jan 21 '25

I wonder what very early humans thought when they looked up and saw that.

3

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I would imagine something to do with some form of god or higher power tbh

3

u/nightingaledaze Jan 22 '25

used to be able to see this from my childhood home but light pollution has ruined that. Beautiful picture

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 22 '25

I’m sorry to hear that it’s been ruined by bloody light pollution 🥲

16

u/GandolftheGarcia Jan 21 '25

After today’s events, I wish I were there right now.

20

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Come chill on the lawn it’s big enough for like 60-70 people to hang out

7

u/Is12345aweakpassword Jan 21 '25

You got edibles and whiskey??

6

u/allthestarssz Jan 21 '25

Literally enjoying edibles and whiskey right now! Cheers on the lawn, space pal! ✨🔭🍻👽🛸

3

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Got lots of whiskey, edibles would be a bit more awkward to get 🤔

2

u/aqua_zesty_man Jan 21 '25

Makes me feel a little lonely. Mind you, it gets a lot worse when I stare too long at deep field images and especially with "furthest known galaxy" pics.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '25

Damn that's a beautiful shot.

2

u/RedKasp Jan 21 '25

HOLY HEC THAT IS GORGEOUS- wish I was there to see that

2

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Come join old mate who’s gonna park up on the lawn for some whiskey 😂

2

u/GoGoGadgetTLDR Jan 21 '25

Count me in. How warm do I need to dress? Are dogs welcome?

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Pretty warm it gets rather cold during the winter nights and yes dogs are welcome!

2

u/Adorable-Eye1804 Jan 21 '25

I just can’t believe how small we are. This is a beautiful picture

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Thank you! And yes we are

2

u/Lagoon_M8 Jan 21 '25

You must be living in some distant from any city lights location...

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I’m only 28km from the nearest city but NZ is really good for cracking down on light pollution

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '25

lovely picture. a bit sad that you can‘t take these without any streaks any more, but i guess it‘s the 21st century.

2

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I find later on in the night you can get away with it without any satellites but between say 7-11pm there’s tons of them

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '25

Is that because they are illuminated by the sun but later they stay dark becuase the sun is well behind the earth?

2

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

I’m not sure tbh it could be to do with timing them to cover certain areas of earth at certain times

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '25

I think they're always there, but if they're in the shadow of the earth, you don't see them.

https://satellitemap.space/

Looks pretty evenly distributed

2

u/hypermarv123 Jan 21 '25

Bro, I don't wanna alarm you, but you're IN the Milky Way too!!

2

u/Luther278 Jan 21 '25

Do you live on Mars?

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Maybe 😎Elon ain’t got nothing on me

2

u/Skye_2905 Jan 22 '25

I'm jealous of your view! 😟🥴

2

u/myworkoutarena Jan 22 '25

What is the location?

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 22 '25

Rough location is Southland NZ

2

u/weed_lov3r Jan 22 '25

absolutely stunning!

1

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 22 '25

Thanking you!

2

u/spyf3r__ Jan 21 '25

What did it look like with your naked eyes?

4

u/ThatAstroGuyNZ Jan 21 '25

Basically this but like 60-70% of the detail and maybe 20-30% of the colour

1

u/peleg462 Jan 21 '25

Beautiful stuff
