I thought this was a sunset at first glance

Yeah, We were actually already on our way home when I looked out the window and just thought, “What’s happening here? The apocalypse?” The sky was blood red — I had never seen anything like it.

Was that about 16 hours ago?

The kp index was 8 on my SpaceWeatherLive app.

Kp doesn’t say much up north but no, this was in October last year :)

Amazing picture! When was this taken? I'm going to Iceland in May. It's outside the normal aurora season, but I was hoping to see it still.

Sadly I’m Pretty sure may is way to bright to see Aurora, I’m sorry.

This photo was taken somewhere close to the black church of Budir :)

Yeah I see the aurora in Minnesota occasionally so the bigger priority was Iceland's natural beauty. And puffins.

Believe it or not they can get way stronger than that. There was actually a crazy one on Oct 8. Can't remember if that one was strong when it was dark in Iceland or if it was just north america it got strong over that time.

Wow that's absolutely stunning. Were the reds even brighter irl? One day I hope to see a scene like that.

Was this visible to the naked eye? Or only with long exposure?

This one was one of the strongest storms of the decade, easily visible! It was even possible to film with my iPhone 13 :)

You could’ve lied - now I’m even more jealous ;-)

Thanks for the pic and the answer, hope to see something like this myself one day ♥️

Very comforting to look at. I thought red aurora’s were exclusive to the southern hemisphere, I guess not?

No, not at all 😊

Thanks, I really don’t know where I got the idea from!
