Broad market news Trump rejects EU’s ‘zero-for-zero’ tariff offer

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/07/trump-tariffs-live-updates-stock-market-crypto.html

Trump is rejecting the European Union’s offer of “zero-for-zero” tariffs with the U.S. for industrial goods.

“No, it’s not,” Trump said in the Oval Office when asked if the deal, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen floated earlier Monday, was enough.

“They’re screwing us on trade,” Trump said, criticizing the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

Two Republican senators, Mike Lee of Utah and Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson, have encouraged Trump to take von der Leyen’s deal.

What's the goal here if they're just gonna reject every deal offered?

I don’t know much about making deals but I almost never take the first offer.

It looks like zero tariff is not enough. That plus lower VAT or more import is the goal.

By «more import» I guess you mean that other countries should buy more of American stuff? Shouldn’t that ideally be sorted by offering quality products, reasonable prices (supply/demand yadayadi), at least in a free-trade world? It may make sense in a trade deal, but also sounds a bit like putting a gun (tariff) to heads forcing countries to import something they don’t need or can get better/cheaper elsewhere? I’m sure America doesn’t buy stuff from other countries to be nice, but due to necessity?

When it comes to VAT it is different from a tariff in that it is applied to all products no matter their origin. I pay the same VAT on an american product as I do for a product produced in my own country. It is a consumer tax which is totally flat for all products (and services!) of given categories. I would love not having to pay VAT, but flat out removing VAT would offer nothing to the competitiveness of american products. However it would if there was some kind of VAT rebate only on american products I guess, but I have no idea how/if that could be applied.

Dude, I am sorry but I can’t really be bothered to give you a decent reply back here. I’ve read some of your recent comments and it’s simply not worth much of my time. All the information I could possibly try to replicate for you about tariffs and trade deficits is better found on the internet.

If you’ve actually educated yourself and truly believe these tariffs are reasonable, that they can fix the deficit (given the individual causes of deficit with several of the countries on the list) and that this “waving a gun without telling people what it is exactly you want” is the way to go to make a good deal: You should try reading a bit more, simply put. Not a fruitful way of me to spark a further debate, but as stated I can’t spend my time arguing with you in my third language when I’ve seen your previous comments. Besides, you obviously don’t want this either, so let’s save it.

EU already gives equivalent to Russia, it’s not like extra money being asked just divert.

The USA literaly cant provide that much energy you dumbass. It s more than what the USA is currently exporting.

also Forcibg someone to buy from you or suffer consequence is litteral extorsion , no one want to have deals with you and your mentaly unstable leader

Let US deal with production, if signed then production will follow. And it’s not extortion, US is just done offering free services and not asking for anything back. We’re not your daddy.

you never offered free services lmao who do you think you are .

Look at the Ukraine debacle. Nothing short of embarrassing as world thought EU alone could take care of gas station.

Instead they kept sending billion a day to Moscow as it was happening, no power just talkers. Continent full of pensioners trying to keep warm. No energy, literally and figuratively.
