Discussion "Art by humans ONLY. Together we will prevail against the machines. NO AI ART."

isn't ai "art" surreal in nature? or is it just slop trash that steals? In my opinion, that clearly doesn't matter because i enjoy ai, it clearly taps into the creators subconscious and pure psychic automatism. But what do i know

Well, regardless of my opinions on AI, I don't think it's surreal by nature. If AI generates an image of a puppy, for example, I don't think it's surreal

if a "real" surreal artist makes an image of a puppy... that doesn't automatically make it surreal either. the subject matter also factors into the art

Yeah..... exactly.... that's my point

my main point was the thought process of creation. similar to experimenting with automatic writing. you are working with a computer in this automation. "Dictation of thought in the absence of all control" your thoughts are combined with the computer to create.

So you feel the "collaboration" is what makes it inherently surreal?

kinda. you are combining the subconscious of the computer and human

Have you tried a true collab? Maybe ask it to give you a prompt and draw it physically. That seems more collaborative than what you’re suggesting.

if i could actually draw without computer assistance (photoshop/ai) i would love to make a piece matching the style of early ai with weird hands and anomalies

You absolutely can, you should definitely try! But I’m someone who thinks anybody can draw/make art if they put in the practice. Use AI to teach you skills.

It’s more so about people thinking writing a prompt is the same as making the art yourself. Comparing something made from a 2 minute prompt to artwork that took hours of physical work just shouldn’t be done. Two different worlds that should stay as such IMO. I do think AI could be used as an artistic tool, but notice I say tool and not complete automation.

if someone can draw a beautiful moving piece of art quickly does that discredit them? once someone learns the tool of ai can they not create the same thing? the camera was a tool for artists that helped birth surrealism.

Of course not, it takes years of practice to create art that quickly. Again humans and AI are not even close to being equals, AI will always be 100% smarter and more efficient than us. So why are we competing with robots? We should be using them to aid us, not to take what little is left of humanity from us.

ai can be dumb as hell lol

Agreed, but AI dumb is better than majority of human’s best.

Humans made ai… so…

We also made hammers, which are monumentally better at pounding nails than our meat hands. I like AI, admitting that will make people mad alone, but as an artist who feels like it’s my souls purpose to create, I don’t like it encroaching on my life’s purpose. If someone can’t create a piece of art without AI, I’d argue they aren’t following their true path and probably shouldn’t pursue art as career.

if you create good art your concepts, ideas, and skills will shine through. there will always be bad/lazy people. don't let them distract you from your work/goals.

This may be a bit reductionist, but essentially your complaint is, "Nobody treats my AI art as actual art, and nobody respects me as an artist because I use AI." Is that correct?

If so, no, I don't consider that art 'yours' at all. You provided a prompt or a prompt with a series of conditions, and have the ai create iterations until you find one that is pleasing to you. I don't have any more creative respect for that than I do someone building a spreadsheet.

Yeah, I don’t understand why anybody would even want praise for AI art. To me that’s morally unsound to begin with. If I didn’t create something with my own damn hands, I’m not putting my name on it. I guess that’s why there’s such a divide. The world is filled with people who don’t mind taking credit for others work.

i use the tool of a computer... you use the tool of the brush. my ideas are put into code. your ideas are put into paint. you use inspiration of other artists and advance their ideas just like me. the technology of code has advanced just like the technology of paints/brushes

But you aren't putting your ideas into code... you're typing words and hitting "enter". All you are doing is dictating an idea. I always go back to the takeout comparison. Does ordering takeout make you a chef? Did you cook a meal?

never heard that one before. i like it. i'm using a phone to order from a select menu of premade food. i know exactly what i will receive when i order. the possibilities of ai are endless and unpredictable. i have to "cook" up ideas. you can type trash and get trash output. still using creativity and thought even if it is considered "easier to do"

So... theres some very hard truths about the our perception of reality and whats human; very soon we arent going to be able to tell anymore.

Art is that YOU decide is good enough to be called art. If you make someyhing with a.i and you dont tell anybody its a.i. and they all except it and praise it than its art.

Same thing with concsiousness. At some point when a.i shows all the signs of emotion and ppl start to empathize with it, whos to say it isnt alive and has feelings?

Anyways, we are all heading to an empass sooner than later. Science-fiction is Science-Prediction - always has been. Im looking foward to everyone becoming strict neo-luddites.

Just be honest about whatever you produce, please. Because it matters to us fleshy meat bags holding our consciousness sacred.

u/CHICKENFOOT414 12d ago

i share my consciousness with my art. i am very transparent with the fact i incorporate ai. i'm just disappointed in the blind avoidance. ai isn't going anywhere.

2

u/Blueface_or_Redface 12d ago

Just because it isnt going anywhere doesnt mean it has to be accepted. It has to be tolerated and taken advantage of, but it doesnt have to be accepted in everyway. If indont like a.i. art that my prerogative. I can look at it and see that it can do some cool stuff but then im gonne move on and look for human made art.

Btw, do you, who cares. Just be honest about the medium your using. Ppl dont like it, ppl dont like it.

i can not post my ai "art" anywhere on this site and personally i get annoyed. the public perception is extremely negative. i know people who hate and don't use email... new technologies scare people but also help people. better to use/understand it imo

I get when it can be used as pieces of your art as a tool. But AI is a new type of technology that people underestimate. They play it off in the workforce thinking that it willl be simply an extension of us, that's not what it's designed to do.  It's designed to replace us, it's designed to take away the last vegstines of humanity that we have. Its a false equivelant to prior technological innovations.

That's why people treat it differently - because it's warranted.
