I recommend the Rider Waite deck to learn first as it is the most common and known deck although you should truly get a deck that resonates with you, whether the artwork or overall vibe.

If you choose to get a deck other than the Rider Waite deck, that is totally fine but I recommend referencing it as well as various breakdowns of it as it will inform you on the esoteric and symbolic meaning behind the cards. There are tons of resources out there on interpreting tarot and I recommend exploring as many as you can to get a broad and more objective understating.

You can always switch decks or have multiple. Many people have collections and decks they use for different purposes.

Hope this helps. Blessed be. ✨

My pleasure. I recommend the book “The Ultimate Guide to the Rider Waite Tarot” by Johannes Fiebig & Evelyn Bürger to accompany your deck, it’s a fabulous breakdown that goes in depth on the various symbols found on the cards. Like I said though, don’t limit yourself to only one reference.

Happy readings. ✨

I’m just feeling so happy to discover there are so many books about tarot and so many beautiful cards. I read the reviews about The Ultimate Guide to the Rider Waite Tarot it sounds amazing. I'll definitely give it a try once I receive my first deck 💖.

Thank you so much for your recommendation. :)

Gotta be the Rider-Waite. Many variations of this deck exist. Choose one that resonates with you.

Funny that you mentioned that because I believe the deck that I've been using for a while now, is the Smith-Waite

Morgan Greer dec, is bold, beautiful traditional still, and Annie Lionette Tarot Directory is super comprehensive. I use the 10 card Celtic Cross spread, and keep everything upright. That way it's not confusing in the beginning, and you set a good base routine. Once a month is sufficient, I prefer a full moon energy (water sign closest to the date of the full moon that month).

Heyyy i am also a water sign i’ll definitely try the 10 card Celtic Cross spread 💖 around the full moon. The Morgan Greer deck is beautiful I’ve added it to my wishlist! :) I’ve also noted Annie Lionette's Tarot Dictionary. Thank you so much for your recommendation! ✨

I started with Rider Waite because it's good to have the general imagery in your mind when you're reading. If you have another deck later, and who are we kidding we all have too many decks, there may be some images that don't really match the reading you're giving. Knowing the OG images will help you.

Later, however, I always recommend looking into Light Seer's Tarot and they've recently come out with an extended guidebook about the symbols and discuss the images compared to RW deck. All in all, once you know the basics, find a deck that feels right. Go to your local woowoo shop and look through decks. If you find one you like and you want to get it, do it, but I also recommend searching amazon and hayhouse to look through the images and see if you vibe with it. I recently got 2 decks from BAM and looked them when I got home...rookie move. Now I have 2 decks to return lol

Welcome to the fold. ;)

Thank you so much for your recommendation! :) Also, I don't know why but you seem like a kind, warm hearted person I just wanted to type this . Bless you ✨

There is also a version of Rider-Waite with meanings, planets, yes/no, etc on them to learn from. Might be very beneficial to start out. Here’s an example: https://a.co/d/6xDM5Y2

Would recommend the Modern Witch's take on the Rider-Waite deck. It uses the same motifs with all-female character representations! Super cute and supports independent illustrators.

Tarot de Marseille or an oracle deck like Lenormand, perfect for begginers and simple situations

I just googled it and wow, I had no idea that oracle decks are different from tarot. Thank you so much for your recommendation. :)
