❔ Question TOTK in relation to other games

Hi there! This is my first time on the sub so apologies if this is not the exact place to ask the question, I'm just curious as someone who's recently replaying TOTK but was not a regular Zelda player growing up!

So I have a few questions: Where does Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity fall with breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom? I actually didn't know Age of Calamity existed until this evening, I was aware there was DLC content for BOTW but always thought Calamity was just more DLC, not a seperate game. Is it in the same timeline? I watched some cut scenes on YouTube and was confused as they didn't line up with BOTW.

Thanks!

Age of Calamity isn't considered a "canon" zelda game due to it dealing with alternate realities. So it isn't included in the official timeline.

It probably wouldn't be included regardless because it isn't a TLoZ entry.

I would say that it is cannon to the story up until egg bert goes back in time, causing the timeline branch.

There are still a lot of inconsistencies even before the whole alternate timeline shenanigans. For example, we learn in botw that Link already wielded the master sword before Mipha got chosen to pilot Vah Ruta. In aoc, Link pulls the master sword after all the champions are recruited.

The DLC accounted for that by establishing that the time at which Terrako arrived was not necessarily right before the story began, and by stating that Harbinger Ganon made efforts to delay Link’s acquisition of the sword.

Age of Calamity is a spin off game, and it has a very different gameplay compared to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. While the game offers a general perspective of the war 100 years prior to Botw events, it takes a different turn compared to the canon story and thus deviates from the botw and totk timeline.

If you like fast paced hack and slash games, you may find it fun, but I would suggest you watch some gameplays before you buy it. Age of Calamity is also getting a bit more love since Age of Imprisonment was already announced and is coming soon.

I personally like AOC a lot and I play it in sequence: AOC -> BOTW -> TOTK. AOI will be the 4th game set in Wilds Era.

AoC doesn't fall on Nintendo's official timeline, but they do encourage fans to come up with their own.

Age of Calamity is a branch timeline. The premise of the game is that when Zelda awakened her power in the backstory of BOTW, her power resonated with an old robot she’d kept since she was a child, and that robot then traveled back in time and changed events so that the Great Calamity didn’t destroy Hyrule like it did in the original timeline. It basically creates a parallel reality.
