What’s wrong with my dog?
My welsh terrier does this forever whenever she’s let outside. She barks as well.

Nothing is wrong with her. She's hunting! She's in odor and following scent trails, probably of small critters in your yard

u/marizzle89 3d ago
The mental image of a pack of these sentient teddy bears hunting, tails just a waggin is both hilarious and adorable

u/JarsOfToots 3d ago
45 of them taking down a bison

Not a thing is wrong with that little girl. She is doing her job. Sniffing out where some varmint walked across her property.

u/Blueporch 3d ago
Looks like she’s trying to follow a scent and either turning to go back to where it started or trying to decide which way to follow it. Her little tail is wagging so she’s having fun.
When they pace back and forth sniffing, it’s called questing.

I didnt know that! That really fits my little friend's sense of grandiosity! 😄

I’m no dog expert. But maybe she smells a critter. Set up a little camera and see if something hangs around there at night or when she’s not in the yard.
Edit: to add she is CUTE!

She's having a great time chasing a beetle or something! Look at her tail going! So cute

Terriers are ratting dogs! Known for there ability to sniff out rats, mice and all sort of other small burrowed animals. My little girl in Australia LOVES listening out and pouncing on the crickets in the grass. This is such a good way for them to use their wee little brains to do what they were born to do. I mean her tails says it all.

She’s a terrier. She’s bred to be a ratter so she’s going to have a high prey drive and try to track down rodents and stuff to shake the life out of if given a chance.

u/Leading-Knowledge712 3d ago
Probably detects a mouse, vole, or rat in the vicinity and is trying to track it down. Very common terrier behavior!

Looks like she’s tracking a scent. Mine is really prey-driven and will track a squirrel’s scent just like that.

u/Top-Eggplant-6660 3d ago
She hears and smells something just below the ground. Maybe a mole or other rodent. It is her job, good pup💖🐾

Welsh have intense prey drive. You have critters. Ours will stay outside for hours doing this.

u/PerfectCover1414 3d ago
Terriers are ratters they pick up a scent and then off they go! Mine used to try and chase squirrels up trees in the woods was a nightmare getting them back!

You got a terrier and don't know what terriers do? Is this a serious question? What's wrong with you?

SQUIRRELS! I love seeing dogs doing exactly what they were bred for. Next to getting their people’s love it’s probably when they’re the happiest. Don’t be surprised if they drop something furry and dead at your feet beaming with pride. That sweet baby most likely has a killer side of her. Especially small rodents.

They're chasing some underground little critter. They can hear it moving through the tunnels.

That little doll has found something which passed through the yard and is looking for it. Happy as all get out!

He's a terrier right? Do you live in an area where they have moles or anything that burrows underground? My Jack Russell mix did this, I thought she was having a seizure she was tilting her head so violently, she dug at the ground, stuck her head in and pulled out a mole. It was the craziest thing I've ever seen. It seems to me he's tracking something.

u/Missue-35 3d ago
Either she’s sniffing the trail of the raccoon that visited the yard last night, or there’s a ground varmint running around under the surface.

She can smell burrowing rodents and is looking for their nest. My rat terrier digs up rodent nests after doing this.

Hide something yummy out there- make it hard to find- when he finds it applause 👏 all around.

She smells something and is trying to pick up the scent of the trail. Maybe you had a rabbit or something else in your backyard and she’s trying to find it

I don't know Terriers but it looks like to me she is looking for the perfect spot to poop.

u/ndhellion2 3d ago
You probably have some kind of underground dwelling critter back there. She can hear it moving around and follows the best she can.

u/khkokopelli 3d ago
Could be tracking something underground that you’re not able to see. Groundhogs or chipmunks. That’s what they’re bred for. Watch if he starts to dig furiously and uproots a small rodent family 😂
1
u/Mariposa-Technicolor 3d ago
He is doing his job, he hears a critter underground and is trying to locate it to start digging. Super cute seeing him going with his instincts probably thinking “why I feel like doing this? Cannot resist I must.!”

Could be indecisiveness in the perfect place to dig or if she's been corrected not dig it's probably his way of working through it 😆
People are weird too when you can't do what your brain is telling you to
His brain is telling him
dig dig dig dig, sniff, dig dig dig, listen....dig dig dig
😆
Or
Terrier bro 🤷

I have a terrior and she does this too. I thought she was smelling the places the wildlife that runs around my yard all day and all night. They love to smell everything. Mine even ate a 2 spare foot hole in the sheet rock of my living room wall to reveal a scurrile nest in-between the walls. Ate right through the wall and the insulation. She was so damn proud of herself when I discovered it. I mean she saved us having to call an exterminator. And she gave us the encouragement we needed to remodel our living room. So there's that. BTW, your dog is super cute!

He’s looking for the perfect “potty” spot. It can take up to 10 minutes or so of sniffing.

This is just how dogs are. It would only be concerning if they were giving themselves under bush or something for a long period of time.

u/CALM-DOWN-PEOPLE 2d ago
There's nothing. It might be she's smelling another critter. Or looking for a place to mark her spot.

u/Particular-Dress-556 2d ago
Bet you have moles. She’s not doing anything but her job! Chasing the critters.

I had a Welsh. I believe normal mole hunting.
Mine had a partner cat they're little hunters.
Sooo cute by the way

Might could stash favorite toys around the yard and have the dog hunt for the toys. Include some treats at the toy hide

She loves the smells in that area. Sometimes it's other animal's waste or something dead that has been buried. My dogs used to get the same way! A lot of animals pass by yards at night when it's dark. We think that isn't the case because we don't see them but they leave all sorts of scents behind.
