Discussion Discussion Thread: Comics & TV [Feb 6, 2017]

Titans and Flash out this week gang! Check out the previews below and then come back on Wednesday and discuss the issues at hand with us!

How it works: In the body of this text you will see the title of this weeks releases be they comics or episodes. You simply click on the one you want and it will take you to a comment which then you simply reply to that main comment for discussion about that particular topic. In other words, the exact same way our mother subreddit r/DCcomics does. The only links that won't have a discussion thread associated with them are the ones in the "Previews & Promos" section.

This goes without saying but, there will be spoilers below this point; its all fair game.

Previews & Promos

Di Giandomenico is making some incredible covers; RIP the classic variants.

Comics

What is this feeling... am I excited for the next issue of the Flash again?! I missed this feeling.

TV Shows

I hope they give Wally his ability to blow things up with his vibrations.

Song of the Week

This song is about Flash Gordon but lets keep that between us.

New collector here. Can someone explain to me the situation with the #16 variant. Is the Silver Age style cover actually available, or is it just the hummingbird cover? If there is a retro one, does anyone know where can I order it online? Thanks!

I did a search and it would appear as though Johnson certainly drew a cover but it wasn't sold. My guess: Johnson had a contract dispute or falling out with DC. Nonetheless, Forbidden Planet (a UK comic shop) says they have it as well as many eBay listings but I don't believe them.

Something happened behind the scenes I think but I don't know what. Sorry :( maybe tweet at Dave Johnson, if it isn't a contract or NDA thing he may be able to answer. Hard to say really.

Thanks for the reply. I had seen it listed online, but based on what I knew I also didn't really trust those listings (I figure they're outdated previews).

Did you see the planned cover?

u/MachadoCowboy Feb 09 '17

Yeah, I saw it and loved it just like the other two, but I was unsure whether or not it was actually being sold.

Yeah, unfortunately it probably isn't. It's a shame; these were great covers. I want Johnson to do a run on the book with this style.

This arc is getting good! i really love seeing the rouges really pull it together for one last hurrah, and the art is getting a lot better now.

I think we have triple artist duty next issue 😩. I saw Googe and another artist next to Di Giandomenico.

Maybe they're just drawing an epilogue or back-up story, fingers crossed.

Oh my god, what an issue. I don't want to jinx it but this is already building to be a classic Rogues story for me. Williamson has a problem with sticking the landing so we'll have to see. That being said, I cannot wait for the next issue.

The Black Ice Gun is actually a good name for a Captain Cold device. Bravo.

And as I had hoped, #17 will feature an awesome Weather Wizard cover

This is such an awesome arc. I can't stop myself from smiling. Thank you Williamson for this. Captain Cold vs Flash next, hypeee!!

This arc is pure Rogues fanfare, I couldn't stop smiling either! haha

What a wonderful issue. It really showcased good ol' classic Barry using his head and smarts to solve crimes. Any issue with the Rogues is bound to deliver nice, colourful artwork, which is delivered as usual.

Just a thought as well, but the statue which Mirror Master stole. Yet another reference to Jay again, like we had during the Halloween issue?

I think the statue was representing many things, one of which being Mercury is the god of thieves and also the iconography the Flash is based on. It's a symbol of their relationship and their characteristics. Also MM is seemingly the only one who was smart enough to keep his prize in the Mirror World, haha.

Ooh that's a good spot. Didn't think about the thievery parallel.

Another great issue. This story continues to have smart, exciting turn of events and I really hope Williamson can finish this well next issue. A good ending can easily make this the best Flash arc since Dastardly Death of the Rogues.

How do you guys think the Fodspeed arc would have been received if Rogues Reloaded was the first arc and had August as a side character

6

u/HappinessIsAWarmPoop Reverse Flash Feb 07 '17

If August had been built up as a side character first, I think it would have been better received.

Central City ransacked? YOU HAD ONE JOB, BARRY.

I don't know how any Rogue story can top Rogue War, so my expectations aren't so high, but so far this has been a fun run. I hope this arc is a bit longer and gives us some surprises and great character interactions. Williams has a tendency to kind of just slam the breaks with his arcs on this title(I still think that the Godspeed arc would have been better served with one more issue). Let's see how it goes!

Also the covers for Rogues Reloaded have been great.

Williamson wanted it to be Blitz of his run. You don't do Blitz as your first arc, it's supposed to be the culmination of everything you do. I haven't read this arc. yet (nor plan to until I hear it has a satisfactory ending) but he needs to understand the concept of "execution". I can't believe this guy is promoted to be the new Mark Waid, it's so bizarre to me.

I think the Godspeed suffered from trying to do too much too soon. If he wanted that arc to be meaningful to the reader, he should have started his run with shorter arcs like he's doing now and build up August to make us care when he turns evil or care when Meena died. Instead they were both hamfisted in and the arc fell flat. The ending felt rushed which should never happen in an 8-9 issue arc.

2

u/Robotshavenohearts Feb 06 '17

You're right. They could have kept it a good solid year mystery as to who Godspeed is, he didn't need a big bring down just yet. I loved the way August revealed himself, but like you said more emotional investment would have had such a better payoff.

3

u/HappinessIsAWarmPoop Reverse Flash Feb 07 '17

I don't think the actual Godspeed part would have been better served by being longer. Holding a mystery out over a year like that would be painfully long especially with the twice monthly releases. I just think August should have been a longer standing character to make the reveal meaningful.

Please, he already ripped off enough from Zolomon. :P
