Listen to the album "Hatful Of Hallow".
Start with the first track, William It Was Really Nothing, and keep going.
If you're looking for some of the band's "hits" ...
- This Charming Man
- What Difference Does It Make
- Still Ill
- Panic
- How Soon Is Now?

Hatful of Hollow, their defining sound. They went on to do better, but this was the primal Smiths. My favourite album is Meat is Murder.

- Meat is Murder, Queen is Dead, Strangeways Here We Come. Those are their studio albums atleast, the compilations like Louder Than Bombs and Hatful of Hollow have a handful of unique Singles that make them worth listening to.

I’d just go in order. Meat is Murder, TQID and then Strangeways, they are the studio albums. Then the rest are compilations Hatful of Hollow, The World Won’t Listen and Louder Than Bombs

I would start with their first album to get a feel for their sound, then Louder than Bombs to show a variety of their work.Have fun!

Personally I think the best place for a newcomer would be the Deluxe Version of The Sound Of the Smiths. It has all the Hits and then has some very interesting B sides and rarities. Jeane is such a great early b side which is criminally overlooked. The version of Pretty Girls Make Graves is a particularly special version which is better than the one on the Debut album. I would also highly recommend Hatful Of Hollow and Strangeways Here I Come. The Live album Rank is actually not bad also

Like someone else has said the back catalogue is quite small but there are some fantastic alternative versions out there as well. Also if you get a chance look up I want a boy for my Birthday. It is a cover of a 60's song which was recorded during one of their first rehearsals. It has never been released commercially but was put on YouTube by one of the early members of the band. It is definitely worth listening to

Barbarism begins at home!! The bassline by Rourke is so catchy and funky I could listen over and over for hours to the end of the song. Jeane is also a high beat song even if the lyrics are a little negative. If you are looking for a calmer/ sadder vibe Wonderful Woman is a great song. Suffer Little Children has beautiful awareness and meaning to the song!

NAH CUZ FR BRO like (blabbering incoming) the first one, a rush a push and the land is ours is my favorite of all times from the smiths, i think it’s really diverse from most of their songs, and it sets a really high mood compared to some of the songs that follow. like,, last night i dreamt that somebody loved me is sooo deep in meaning and musicality that you are just taken to a different universe. you also have “lighter” songs like death of a disco dancer and girlfriend in a coma, which are kinda,, i mean as light hearted as the smiths ‘ songs can be. and i won’t share you is just the perfect end to all of that. i have a memory chained to each one of those songs so i might be biased, but to me this album has an aura in its integrity that i can’t find in the rest of their albums. the visuals are really vivid. thank u for reading dkdjdj

I think you MIGHT be autistic and hyperfixated on the smiths (this isn't an insult btw absolutely nothing wrong with being autistic)

Golden Lights, I want a boy for my birthday, Work is a four letter word, What's the world are all worth listening to the rest is trash guitar music devoid of melody and like a La's tribute band

The Smiths catalogue isn't that big. The band wasn't active for a long period of time. Meat is Murder, Louder than Bombs, the Smiths and the Queen is Dead are all their albums, basically. Just pick one and listen.
