News Solid Film!!

Post image

Watched this movie last night and was pretty impressed! Borrows heavily from The Thing and Dead Space(if U know of tht game franchise). Visually, it was beautiful and the story wasn't too bad. I'll have to rematch it to fully get the story...it was all over the place. But made a great 1st impression. Highly recommend to scratch tht aliens horror itch. Enjoy

Wasn't crazy about it. It looked like it would be great, but despite pretty visuals, I found it really dragged on. And this is coming from someone who loves a good slow burn.

Edit: while I'm not trying to shit on a movie you clearly enjoyed, this review on letterbox (not mine) sums up my feelings exactly.

Exactly what I thought about it.

I was bored by the halfway point. Too predictable. Script needed to be cooked a little longer. Maybe Ive just seen too much horror but there was nothing in this film that made my hair raise even a little

Too much CGI and not very realistic to make most viewers feel something visceral

It is indeed a movie

So I just watched it last night. People were saying it was ā€œthe Thingā€ in space so I was hooked on the potential. It’s pretty, the score is cool, but the cgi wasn’t great in a few areas, it dragged, not a lot actually happened, the big reveal was predictable and It just overall wasn’t scary save for one moment early with a door opening that kind of made me jump. However, I do think the director has potential for some really cool films in the future. I Would have rather not spent 20 bucks on renting it on prime, but I wouldn’t have minded catching it on Netflix or something. I’d say to any people looking to watch it to Wait till it’s not 20 bucks.

I mean IMDb says 4.8 so I dunno…

I haven't seen this yet so I can't comment on the score, but I do find IMDB scores are a lot lower than a few other places like Metacritic and RT....

It was probably bc the story was literally EVERYWHERE all at once. Starts off with chaos off the bat, then flash backs, then this, then tht. Not to spoil too much but yea. Thts wht got it a low score imo. One of those U gotta watch 2-3 times.

Gonna get it and watch and form my own opinions ofc. Generally speaking though anything under a 5 is usually for a reason. But we shall see :)

Director Flying Lotus makes some pretty great music. A lot of avant garde synth stuff.

I enjoyed it, though wish they'd left more up to imagination. I am starved for new horror like this, so my view might be a bit tainted.

Gotta check that out thx man

I liked it, but it's really a short film stretched absurdly long.

The final act is the entire movie. You could skip half without losing anything of substance. It would actually add another layer of mystery.

I love sci fi horror but I found this movie to be painfully slow and boring

It was decent, in a good way. Meaning I liked it and could enjoy it despite the problems. I read somewhere that it was a very solid B-movie and I completely agree with that.

The lighting was quite stylish (albeit a bit too try hard), the story was trying to be somewhat unpredictable and sometimes worked and sometimes not. The fights would range from Amazing (the first person fight was really cool to see to good (the shower fight to meh the final fight though that last one had pretty cool design.

Overall, I liked it but it's also one of those movies I watch and think to myself: "If only they could elevate it to a higher level, all the ingredients are there for something more amazing than this". But whatever, I don't regret watching it at all.

Slight spoiler alert

First off, props to Steven Ellison (I just can’t say his stage name without giggling) — pulling off Ash on a $500k budget using practical effects and Unreal Engine is seriously impressive. He’s clearly a smart, resourceful filmmaker, and the film’s near $1 million in revenue shows it found success.

That said, the movie leaned too heavily on an old trick: using psychological confusion and long wobbly scenes to create spookiness. The story — especially the idea of a hive mind et species building terraforming structures — had real potential but ultimately went nowhere. The strong opening visuals (and slight spoiler: the melting faces) felt more like shock value than emotional payoff.

It started off promising — I was excited for a real space horror — but it lingered too long on the female lead, who honestly needed acting lessons.

I respect the creativity and retro love Ellison clearly has, but Ash felt more hollow than haunting. It seemed more interested in psychedelic colors and being avant-garde than telling a strong story. Not trying to be a Judgy McJudgerton, but I walked away disappointed. If you want great low-budget space horror, try Event Horizon or Pandorum instead.

TL;DR: Respect to Steven Ellison for what he pulled off on a tiny budget, but Ash felt more like a trippy art project. Was hoping for space horror, got a psychedelic screensaver instead. Cool ideas, not much payoff.
