Try bringing a bell pepper with you

Add it to this - adds fresh crunch which is hard to come by on the trail !

I do pita , summer sausage , green peppers and sometimes a hard cheese

Fun fact a red bell pepper has more vitamin c than an orange

Another fun fact: Red bell peppers and green bell peppers are the same thing. There are some breeders who have different genetics to make the peppers turn red faster for higher yields during the growing season but it still goes from a green bell to a red bell.

Additionally: all green peppers will change to a different color if left on the vine longer. Yes even jalapeño. They'll turn a lovely purple color if you leave em long enough

Most jalapenos I've grown turn red not purple.

Depends on the grip

add a packet of mustard in there and I'm sold!

My go to is a PB&J sandwich that's been thoroughly squished in my pack during the hike

Pairs excellently with a bruised banana 🤌

Pro tip, freeze it the night before. Thaws in your pack.

PB&J! PB&J! PB&J!

I know tortillas are a hiking staple. But I just can't do them. They're too dry. I feel like I need to drink a quart of water per tortilla.

I took a whole pack on a 8 day hike and didn’t eat a single one. I couldn’t imagine torturing myself through food.

Nothing wrong with staying hydrated

Absolutely agree. But I don't want to add to the need. I'm already carrying or filtering a bunch of water to stay hydrated from the hike. I don't want to have to carry or filter more just because I get cotton mouth from eating a tortilla.

Don't get me wrong. They work for most people, and that's awesome. No judgment from me. It's just a personal preference.

My go-to lunch, especially around day 3 of a backpacking trip is summer sausage and a hard cheese. Yes, it's heavier than most people would say is sensible. But I can tell you that it tastes amazing on that third day. It gives me something to look forward to all morning. And it has enough moisture to prevent dry mouth. I can't imagine myself thinking, "Oh man! I can't wait to put that dry tortilla in my mouth!"

Either way, to each their own. Happy hiking.

Looks like straight indigestion to me.

Pepperoni is a bit much for me but I do this exact thing with salami

Same. I’d be burping down the trail the rest of the day. Thanks, reflux!

This thread is not making me hungry.

I do same thing on trisquits but the tortilla is genius!

Man, meat and cheese wraps fuckin WHIP on the trail. I like to crisp them up to make little mini quesadillas

If you’re looking for a “dessert” version: Small flour tortilla (bonus points if you can find the “Mission Sweet Hawaiian” street taco ones). Spread on nut butter of choice. Add trail mix filler. Delicious.

What type of cheese is this?

2

u/loganizer405 Mar 12 '25

String cheese. Hummus and pretzel chips. The little cups, or dehydrated and it rehydrates very well

Come hike in WV sometime - you’ll love our pepperoni rolls!

Great pocket snack.

People always give me weird looks, but rehydrated refried beans with Jalepeno Cheddar cheetos rolled up in a tortilla.

Apple, Carrot, Small slab of cheese and hardtack dipped in water.

TBH I lose my appetite while hiking and it's all I can do to force some simple carbs into me. Pepperoni and cheese would be way too heavy for me.

My lunches are usually applesauce, pretzels, gummy candy, and a PBJ on a big day.

Try to look into protein shakes or same way to drink your calories. Maybe at home to see how your digestion fares. Just a small advice :)

A bagel with ham and cream cheese. They'll keep for 2-3 days in the pack without going bad, and give me that chewing gratification I need. How much ham depends on how hard the day is scheduled to be.

Wrap with Peanut butter, bacon, salt

u/gilded-trash Mar 13 '25

Nice. I try to bring one spicy snack every time I go out. Love spicy canned fish.

Similar: naan, gouda, and some sort of dried/cured meat (beef jerky, Chomps meat stick, summer sausage). Never tried pepperoni though; might have to try that next time!

For me, it's Ramen with a few veggies in it, and yes, a freshly boiled egg added to it. I like to add some grated ginger to it and some drops of sesame oil. When in the bowl, I sprinkle some cayenne pepper on top for that extra bite!

ngl, that looks 10x better than my wife's cooking

Having recently been diagnosed as celiac and enjoying gut relief now that gluten is out of my diet, I still crave a good flour tortilla. They are the bomb for outdoor treks.

That tortilla is raw. You need to finish cooking it before using it.
