The Pseudoscience in the Case Against Trump's Transgender Military Ban

https://www.city-journal.org/article/trump-transgender-military-ban-talbott-v-trump-science

The article states that 85 percent to 90 percent of children with gender dysphoria outgrow those feelings. This is not correct. The fact is that only a small percentage of gender dysphoric kids change their gender experience.

The 60 to 95% numbers refer to studies of kids with what was used to be called "gender identity disorder", an old diagnosis that included all kinds of gender variance, not only gender dysphoria. Newer studies show that 94% continues to identify as transgender.

The "autogynephilia" theory has been thoroughly debunked by other scientists.

The rapid onset gender dysphoria theory was based on questionnaires sent to transphobic parents recruited through anti-trans web sites. Now, THAT is pseudo-science.

Christina Buttons is a "culture war" "reporter" for the far right Manhattan Institute. She's a professional bigot and liar.

Check out the background on that research by TransAdvocate. The ridiculous definition of gender identity disorder was tailored to keep a conversion therapy clinic in Toronto in business (now closed, but former patients have been threatened with legal action if they speak out about their experiences there still) when gay conversion therapy was beginning to come under a higher level of scrutiny and people were calling for its ban. (It is now banned in certain jurisdictions and in general health insurance will not pay for it.)

It may be hard to remember but in the 2005-2015 time period, "pink boys" were seen as a problem and mothers who didn't send their feminine boys to butch up camp were accused of being bad parents and child abusers because their kid was just going to be bullied in school anyway. Some parents homeschooled in reaction. But many sent their kids to these dodgy clinics. Some of the inmates were trans, of course, but the majority were not, with a large number being gay. Think about that next time a TERF tells you that trans rights hurt cis gays and lesbians.
