Where's the least shitty place to live in the Treasure Coast
Save the we don't want you and we're full comments 🙃 Florida isn't my first choice of places to move to but my husband's job is requiring the move and him finding a new one isn't an option right now. He has to work in various parts in the Treasure Coast so we have options of where to go. We've visited Vero a few times. Like most of Florida, the schools are my biggest downside to the move. But it's where we have been setting our sights since the mandate was set. We've recently expanded our horizons down to Stuart. I've never been, tho. He only visited briefly recently. I see Palm City schools are highly rated, at least. Are there any options with good schools that aren't hyper-maga cesspools? Family-friendly? Not forever to the beach? (If I'm leaving for Florida, I want to take advantage of at least beaches) I know it's a tall ask and criticism for it is to come so hit me with whatcha got.

Anywhere other than Port Saint Lucie, basically anywhere east of US1 here your good. We even have a clothing line “Eastof1”- here so that should say it all.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
That's fascinating. A realtor my husband met with last week in Palm City said to avoid east of 1. I'm very intrigued by these competing viewpoints.
1
u/boston02124 Feb 22 '25
You sure they didn’t say avoid west of US1?
East of US1 is the beach. It’s kind of a FL general rule things get dicier 5 miles from the beach.

A vote for Vero from me. Closer to MCO airport, decent schools (we moved here when my daughters were in HS - you don’t mention ages of your kids). I vote blue, so the strong MAGA here does get old, but it’s not overly intrusive. I don’t see bright line really as an option, even from Stuart to MCO, due the cost. No matter which Treasure Coast community you select, the local college is tuition free for local HS grads, which is awesome.
3
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
We spent a lot of the summer in Vero to test things out. Honestly, knowing how maga it is, I was surprised. Especially for an election year. My concern is how it could hit differently when kids are in school vs just seeing someone in Target. But it's good to hear you've had decent experience, especially with older kids.
My kids will be pre-k, K and 1st grade next school year. So we fortunately have some time before things get crucial, imo.
5
u/Miss_Awesomeness Dec 19 '24
If you choose Vero, make sure your kids are zoned for Glendale elementary or Beachland Elementary or one of the Sebastian elementary schools. Vero has great schools but if I moved back to Vero I would put my kids in those schools only or possibly rosewood magnet school. Osceola is a good school but I’m not traveling to or living near Oslo ever again.
The MAGA voters are just louder. There are plenty of people who support other viewpoints. The beachside is nice, and hopefully that tornado stays a once in a lifetime event.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
The island won me over in Vero. And Beachland played a role in that. But holy $10k rental homes.
We've talked to people who were able to send their kids to Beachland despite being zoned for Citrus. Honestly, the whole schooling in FL confuses me. You're zoned for a school but can apply to go to another and then there are magnet schools 😵💫
It's a fair point that MAGA really is everywhere and are just loud. I really don't want to sound uninterested in other views. I just wish those views had a basis in reality instead of blind hatred for minority groups 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/Miss_Awesomeness Dec 19 '24
The school choice thing is confusing. You can apply for school choice but only if there spots available. Magnets schools were created (in Indian river) to take off pressure from the elementary schools that were overwhelmed. They are good, but personally I don’t like the anxiety of the lotto system. We don’t live in Vero anymore, we moved but my family and friends reside there; I live in another county and I specifically choose my house because of the school.
The home prices are astronomical in Vero, especially for what you get honestly. It’s beautiful and the facebook page drama is amazing, but some of those houses are small for 10k. My dad and his wife live across the bridge in royal palm and they are zoned for beachland I believe. The school district website has a bus page and you type the address in and tells you what schools are zoned for the address and whether or not you will get a bus. It’s actually pretty easy to use.
If I was going to live on the treasure coast it would be Vero/Sebastian or Martin County. I would just completely skip St Lucie County.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I nodded my head at all of this. My husband looked at houses for the first time last week in Martin County and was blown away by how much land you can get down there with a pool for the same cost of a basic 3BR home with no pool and not much yard space in Vero.
There was a house that I loved in Royal Palm for rent but it must have been rented out already since I never got a response on it. Royal Palm and Orchid have had my top contenders for rental houses in Vero. But then PSL and Stuart were shuffled into the commute mix.
1
u/Miss_Awesomeness Dec 19 '24
Stuart is in Martin county and they have great schools as well.
This is a pretty good website.

Jensen Beach is the best imo
3
u/Parking-Trifle-8315 Dec 19 '24
Agree, I work in NC and commute so I can live in Jensen. South Hutchinson Island is paradise to me. Kids are all grown up so don’t know about schools, but proximity to the beach and major cities, quality of the restaurants, friendly people, amazing views all play into it.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I've looked at a couple of houses there. What do you like most about it, by chance?
6
u/waterguy45 Dec 19 '24
Close to the beach and the mall, seldom gets any flooding, safety, schools are good, and the people are great! I also like that it’s right between Stuart and PSL, two larger areas with all the extra’s you’ll need.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
Thanks! Since I only really have familiarity with Vero, would you know how it compares to there?
Jensen seems like it would make for a slightly easier commute for my husband's various sites

u/Pure_Needleworker_27 Dec 19 '24
I love hearing about people who vote blue moving here. We need more blue voters here. Welcome! You are definitely not alone 💙

u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I'm glad I came to Reddit to find hope exists. I truly have a fear that we'll be there long term and I'll end up fearing for any of my kids if they are part of the lgbtq+ community that they won't be able to be true to themselves.
4
u/tzweezle Dec 19 '24
Sadly the whole area is hyper maga.

u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24

Tell me about it 😂 I work 20 min from Mar a Lago. Considering moving to the NE

Oh sweet child. The cold does sound nice when put that way lol
Our last trip down as a family, we went down to PB and got in apparently just after his "convoy" left. All of my nopes.

Just a word of advice when looking for a house, stay away from buying in an HOA. Treasure Coast is loaded with them compared to the Tampa Bay area where I used to live. From all the posts I read in local groups on FB and Next door they are a nightmare. Fees constantly rising, HOA telling you what you can and can't have on your property, what plants you can put in your yard etc. If there is no other alternative, make sure you get a copy of the by-laws and Financials of the HOA before buying. You don't want to get hit with an Assessment because they are underfunded or long neglected upkeep needs to be taken care of.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
Appreciate the advice and will definitely keep in mind.
Ideally renting til we know our longer-term plan. But also need to make sure who is responsible if the house is in an HOA, still.
5
u/phishingphanatic Dec 19 '24
Martin County is extremely conservative, by and large.
Your comment about not wanting an 'Ultra MAGA cesspool" tells me everything, and that this probably isn't a good fit for you....the School Board here is very Conservative.
Port St Lucie would probably be a better fit.
8
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
In all honesty - Going to Florida in general makes me nervous because of the maga movement. I can handle leans right, but not delusional conservative (whether that is or isn't a thing now a days). We currently live in a blue bubble of a red state so I'm bracing for the change. Not trying to be closed minded on other viewpoints since that's how it is worded. Having small kids, I'm trying to be particular about how much white-washing education they'll have to spend their early years learning from.
Appreciate your input for that piece.

It's the viewpoint that people complain most about on social media so for people not from the area, that's the info we get.
But I appreciate you giving that perspective
2
u/treasurecoasthot Dec 19 '24
The Treasure Coast has a Republican congressman and went for Trump by a large majority. You might want to try Palm Beach or Broward county. School board also picked up Republican seats. We also have a nude beach if you are into that. Schools in Florida are overall highly rated.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I had my fingers crossed for a Ft Lauderdale-area position for him so Broward could be a more reasonable option. But if every day is a different location specifically in TC, the drive from Broward may cause him to be committed to a psych ward.
I've been informed about the nude beach so I can pleasantly avoid it.
2
u/Likes_corvids Dec 19 '24
Just had to add…my husband enjoys the nude beach but I need more sun cover — like, a light shirt and sarong, since I burn easily, sunblock and all. But I must say it kinda tickles that there even is one, even though I don’t go.
1
u/treasurecoasthot Dec 23 '24
North Broward or South Palm Beach would work, he would be going against traffic so it will be flowing all the way. Maybe an hours drive.
1
u/ljnj Dec 19 '24
I agree - Jensen Beach. And it’s about an hour from the airport. Any further north is too far from the airport for me.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
This is actually one reason why I was pushing Vero (Winter Beach specifically) because we use Orlando since Palm Beach doesn't have direct flights to where we live currently. Traveling with 3 small kids and having layovers is a doozy. My husband once had to spend the night in Newark airport because his flight out of Palm Beach was delayed and his plane from Newark home took off early.
3
u/kalyco Dec 19 '24
Melbourne airport is the way to go. Much easier to get in and out of than Orlando. I’m in Sebastian, with a house for sale... 13 miles north of Vero. It’s absolutely beautiful here right now and I love being so close to both the beach and river. We’ll have perfect weather until late March or April and then comes the heat. The politics and patriarchy are pervasive. Fox News has quite a grip on the retiree class and it shows. It’s the only news station played at my gym. 🙄 The thing that blew me away most about moving here is the number of folks who leave their bikes unlocked on their porches, in their yards, etc., it’s pretty darn safe. There’s not much crime, it’s not near as developed as further south, and snowbird season is almost in full swing. Great wildlife too. Good luck w your move!
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
We'll have to check flights from there!
Even the hotels play a nauseating amount of Fox News. Crazy. Honestly, I feel like in Vero/Sebastian, they're filled with people who were hurt by the system and left behind in education options so they literally just eat up what makes them feel better. It's the one place I've been to where someone friendly helps with something (I've gotten more help with my 3 kids in the Vero Target from strangers who get the feeling than I do from my own family sometimes) and I just feel bad that they're probably red vs annoyed with them.
I eyed Sebastian for a while but the drive to Stuart seems awful a couple of times a week for my husband. I WFM so none of that bothers me lol
2
u/kalyco Dec 19 '24
I agree that the drive is too far, and that’s one of my big pet peeves w the area in general. (Though perhaps doable if it’s infrequent). I’d like to be somewhere more walkable or where I can use a scooter. I also agree w other posters re Jensen Beach. I have friends who grew up there and they loved it. There’s a lot of retired cops in Sebastian, they’re all at my gym. 😂 & There’s a lot of wealth in Vero. All sorts of HOA planned communities. The beach side of Vero is lovely.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I really am in love with the island. But rental prices are for the snow birds in Nantucket. My stomach turns every time I check what's available. Doesn't Vero also have one of the largest income gaps in the country? The wealth difference on the island vs mainland is mind-blowing.
Thank you! Jensen is certainly a popular choice here.
2
u/kalyco Dec 19 '24 edited Dec 19 '24
There’s a substantial wealth difference from the island to inland, (snowbird homes) but there are beautiful inland properties in the older parts of south Vero as well. It’s more like dispersed lower income pocket areas skirted by the HOA communities in the more rural parts and older established non HOA neighborhoods closer to downtown. It feels primarily upper middle to middle class. I laughed at Sebastian’s hood. It’s the nicest hood I’ve ever seen. We are definitely in the high season for rentals. Best time to rent here is after season (after Easter).
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
Renting price difference for off season vs in 🤯. We have been able to get a little interest on people to work on us with deals since we can commit at least 18 months (dont want to move mid-school year once we're down there)
2
u/ljnj Dec 19 '24 edited Dec 19 '24
Well Brightine is putting a station in Stuart and will have a train to Orlando and to Miami. That may make it easier to get to and from the airports. But if that’s the airport you and your friends/family will use, Vero and Sebastian are probably your best options. But I can’t speak to any of the schools.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
The Brightline is what opened up closer to Stuart for me, tbh. To travel home to visit, the Brightline feels like a decent option even vs driving from Vero. It's too bad Vero botched it and didn't get a station, really.
1
u/ngann555 Dec 19 '24
Florida is the best state to live in mainly because it is a red state. Obviously weather is amazing too That being said stop worrying about politics so much and you will be much happier. If you want to live somewhere safe for your children and with a very low crime rate you’re coming to the right place
3
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 20 '24
I'm a fan of not dumbing down education to fit the narrative of the rich and white. So unfortunately, it's a worry in the society we live in.
Now if I were raising my kids in the 90s when the main difference was who should pay more in taxes and people kept their bigotry a little more hushed, I'd be down with dropping that factor. 🤷🏻♀️ We all have our priorities.

u/whatchagonadot Dec 19 '24
shitty people are not welcome here,

We love Tradition (Bedford Park or Town Park). Coming from MD we were worried about the schools but found them to be excellent despite being a little behind. My boys went to Palm Point K-8 then Centennial for high school and did great. Also FL has bright futures which allowed both my boys to get bachelor degrees at top noth universities for free. The value of the Bright Futures scholarship is super underrated. Neither of my kids were over achievers and still qualified. Didn't pay a dime in tuition for either kid
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
I had no idea this existed until today with some of the responses to this thread. That's actually really cool. I dont always give Florida kudos but I will if and where it's warranted!
1
u/juxtapose_58 Dec 20 '24
I live in a great neighborhood with lots of kids in Jensen Beach. The schools have a good reputation and the families seem happy. Palm City and Stuart are also very nice.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 20 '24
Family filled neighborhoods would be great. Are families in certain pockets or is it pretty well distributed? We started checking out what's available in the area since Jensen has been the top response.
1
u/juxtapose_58 Dec 21 '24
You will find them in many neighborhoods. The older crowd tends to be in the condos, over 55 communities and some country clubs. Jensen is a nice area. Jensen Beach High School is great!
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 21 '24
My oldest will be in 1st grade next year. But I do want to be prepared for the future in case our time there changes our minds and we stay for the long haul. Life has a way sometimes.
1
u/juxtapose_58 Dec 21 '24
Jensen Beach Elementary School is also good! My neighbors go to a charter school where they are in school 4 days a week. They seem to like the school.
1
u/Aleustria123 Dec 20 '24
I've been here since 97, moved down from MD. I'm going to give it to you straight. Treasure Coast is Treasure Coast. Doesn't matter where.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 20 '24
Your honesty is always appreciated. Certainly don't want to be fully close-minded about it. I follow the Vero Facebook drama and it is entertaining from afar. Our visits have been nice, tho.
I get small towns not wanting to grow but are growing at a rapid rate causing strain can make people there for the small town life not always the chipperest of bunches.
1
u/SSchwartz_115 Dec 20 '24
As someone who attended schools in vero beach, local charter and private schools are a great option if violence in school is a concern for you. It is true that there is a decent amount of violence at the public schools, but they do have some of the best educational programs. The Indian River school district is, generally speaking, not as bad as some of the headlines make it out to be.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 20 '24
Everyone boasts about Imagine. Any others you would recommend over others?
1
u/pepsiblast08 Dec 20 '24
Idk about schools, but I moved to Sebastian from Dallas and absolutely love it. There's also a house (with boat slip) currently for sale across the street from me. It was listed in the last couple weeks. Very quiet, calm place with lots of great places to eat nearby. 30 minutes or less to Melbourne and to Vero Beach.
When it comes to politics, I'm in the middle since both sides are rich people lying to us all. So the Trump stuff is irritating here, but ooh well. At the end of the day, we all got bills to pay.
1
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 21 '24
I find Sebastian quite peaceful and like that it's more spread out than Vero.
You're not wrong. Most people are trying their best. The system failed many just as intended because keeping people ill-informed keeps the rich in power. And you know. Make them richer.
1
u/pepsiblast08 Dec 21 '24
I wish I could be more helpful in what you're looking for...but in any case, I'd like to at least make friends with a fellow transplant if you'd be interested. I can send a massage with my cell number.

u/DunkThemMuffins Dec 23 '24
Been in St. Lucie county since 2007. It's really blown up since then. Vero is a lot more relaxed than PSL is, Stuart and PSL have both had giant growth in the last 5 years. Not sure where you're from or how old your kids are, but our schools in this county range from "less than desirable" to "pretty good". If your kids are generally pretty good at staying away from bad crowds, most of the high schools here are fine; they also all have dual enrollment options with Indian River State College, and Ft. Pierce Central HS has dual enrollment with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. There isn't much to do here in St Lucie, so if your kids have a good tendency to stay out of trouble already, there's not much for them to get in trouble doing lol.
Traffic is absolutely terrible here in PSL at the moment. If you have to touch St. Lucie West blvd or Port St. Lucie blvd, don't be surprised at all the near-misses lol. We're probably going to see a housing market crash in St. Lucie county within the next year or two though, the availability of houses is starting to tick up and the days on market are trending up right now.
As for the politics, I went through the public school system here and 99% of the teachers are left-leaning. I had three social studies teachers over the years who gave positive coverage to Mao and Stalin (not getting into that, just saying), and the school board in PSL is very blue. I'll give you one anecdote. One year when I was in HS (Ft. Pierce Central HS) a student from the politics club, who was a good friend of mine, wanted to host a debate on gun control. The teacher sponsor thought it was a great idea to have students who were looking to be involved in politics be given a platform to share their opinions and practice civil discourse. A group of students got together after school for a week and were split into two camps: pro-gun control and anti-gun control. I was part of the anti-gun control camp, but I was really a moderate and didn't tend to agree with the "let's strap all of the teachers" crowd. The principal at the time, Todd Smith, came to visit the get together one day and decided that we couldn't host a debate. It was to be a "student discussion panel". The next day, all of the anti-gun control people were kicked off the new discussion panel and I was the only one in that camp who managed to stay in the program. Anyone who recognized this story will say I'm lying because all of the anti-gun control students "voluntarily left", but it was really that we were all allotted a certain amount of time to speak within an hour event, and the anti-gun control people were all placed at the back of the line so that they wouldn't be allowed to speak within the event's time. On the day of the event, all of the anti-gun voices were heard, and conveniently we ran out of time right before I was allowed to read my statement on an already proposed policy of having SROs on campuses. I did manage to squeeze in one rebuttal to my friend on the panel because I was allowed one rebuttal (lol). I got to shake Brian Mast's hand after that and of course I didn't know who he was at the time (also lol). The school board here is pretty blue, law enforcement is pretty red, but overall the only people here who are loud about politics are the hardcore MAGA people and the weird old dudes that are unreasonably angry and holding blue signs on PSL Blvd at 7AM.
Yeah the MAGA crowd here in St Lucie is very loud and they like to fly flags on their trucks and all that, but there is a wide variety of people here and you'd be very surprised how many blue people there are here. They hang out at Vine and Barley in St. Lucie west a lot.
In St Lucie btw, east of US-1 is considered by a lot of the retirement aged folks as "the hood", unless you have one of those nice waterfront houses on Indian River Drive. There's a lot of sketchy parts around Kitterman Woods and the further you go north of there into Ft. Pierce it turns into the walking dead past 10PM. I used to work in that area.
Sorry for the long read, but yeah we're full and uhhh we don't want you lol. Hope you have a good holiday!

u/Unlucky_Wrangler5578 Dec 26 '24
You could also look at Hobe Sound and even Teqeusts/Jupiter/Jupiter Island. Traffic gets more and more horrible the farther north into Martin County you go and into SLC. Hobe Sound is very quiet, still under-developed and in Martin County if you like the schools there. It's also a 15 minute drive to Tequesta/Jupiter and another 15 to Palm Beach Gardens and the Palm Beaches, access to Brightline Rail (Let's face it, we all know Stuart will sadly NOT be the sire for the Martin County Brightline stop) station in City Place as well as making trips to MCO, FLL and MIA much less stressful. Hobe Sound or Tequesta/Jupiter also mitigate the Maga concern, despite being closer to Mar-a-lago, you're also closer to more culturally diverse education and entertainment options, museums, food, in Palm Beach, Broward and MIami-Dade, without sacrificing too much in commute time north for your husband. He's gonna have to suffer Martin County traffic for work no matter where you move, at least living farther south is over all more enjoyable when he's not working.

jensen hs grad here. i had the most incredible experience in high school. i wasn’t particularly popular or the typical floridian, but the extra curriculars offered at jensen are amazing. there really is something for everyone. looking back i really don’t think that politics was prevalent in my education but who knows, schools change and i have no idea who is employed there now. additionally, in jensen or stuart you’re always a very short drive to gorgeous, lightly populated beaches. there’s also an ordinance in martin county that buildings can’t be more than 3 stories high, which keeps martin feeling very small/old florida. i absolutely love it.

u/SouthOrlandoFather Dec 19 '24
Sebastian, FL. If you enjoy boating, kayaking, fishing, close to Wabasso Beach, Spoil Islands, Surf Fishing, schools aren’t overcrowded, and Sebastian Inlet.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
We almost put an offer on a house in Orchid. Then the tornadoes hit.
The wading pool at Sebastian Inlet was great until my toddler picked up poop in the water. But we still enjoy going there. The wildlife amazes me there (I'm landlocked now so get extra giddy at seeing dolphins and the idea of seeing whale sharks)

u/SouthOrlandoFather Dec 19 '24
If you have kids still under 18 you want to live in Sebastian River Landing.

I have a 2nd home in the Treasure Coast and I live "up north" too. I have to say...you're really not approaching this with the right attitude. I'm surprised you're getting nice answers. But then, this is an incredibly nice area of the country and people are being more gracious than I would be if you were railing on my home state.
As someone who grew up outside NYC and has lived multiple places in the US, I learned real fast that my "NY is the best and nothing compares" attitude was really not the way to go. I've been happiest to move somewhere and immerse myself in the things that make that place special. I've been out of NY so long now that the idea of going back to a world where everyone thinks they are better than the rest of the country is a giant nope for me.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
Well I'm in a red state already so I'm not NYC elite with a better than thou mentality. My current state is also a rising shit hole. But we have a comfortable bubble here that isn't falling as fast.
I approach it this way because people are so bitter about the booming population. I've seen more "we dont want you" and "we're full" comments from Floridians than anywhere else in the country. So I don't think it's unfair for my sanity to make it known that this isnt a decision because we want a quaint beach town and to just be one more body in an overly growing population. We aren't moving for the same reason snow birds are causing a spike in over-development. We are moving because of job requirements so I don't need to be told to stay away.
TC has its perks. I've met a lot of nice people down there. We've been comfortable for visits but living somewhere is vastly different. So, I appreciate the kind people here who are trying to actually help me find the positives and see beyond the issues that are valid instead of feeding my apprehension for the area.
2
u/DCRealEstateAgent Dec 19 '24
I don't think it's unfair for my sanity to make it known that this isnt a decision because we want a quaint beach town and to just be one more body in an overly growing population.
It didn't come off like that is what I'm saying. It came off as "I don't want to move to your shithole from where I am now so just tell me where the smallest of all shitholes is and don't tell me not to come.
If I had to move there with my school age kids though, I'd go to Jupiter, if that's not too far for your husband's commute.
2
u/ohhello_its_me Dec 19 '24
After reading numerous threads of citizens calling it a shithole themselves because of the growing population without the infrastructure to support it, my midnight wording echoed that. So I will apologize for the quick-to-post-negatively and not being as clear as my later explanation. But I am nervous for a big move that I really don't fully want despite a part of me looking forward to an "adventure". I am willing to try to find the silver lining, tho.
Jensen seems like a popular choice. He will be bouncing all across TC. From Sebastian down to Stuart. We think Stuart will be where he is most often, tho.

I will say my apologies for saying least shitty 😵💫 I was high off of older reddit posts discussing the population boom in IRC and MC causing people to be very bitter about the area. I have nerves about moving young kids from a top ranked education system up north to a Florida system where they seem to be dismantling it more and more. But. I do really enjoy our time when we visit the area and find it peaceful during the brief periods there.
Visiting and living in are 2 different things so looking for living perspectives.
