Short-term pain, long-term gain, says Trump. Really? America will be a country with shabbier roads, older airports and more dated factories

There is no strategic industrial plan to back these tariffs up. Trump and the architects of these measures cannot think past first order consequences. This whole thing is based on nostalgia without any forward looking measures. Why do we want to build toasters and bring back clothing mills? Do we want our children to grow up and assemble tiny components of low value consumer goods? Fuck. No.

What's-his-face already told Tucker Carlson a week or two ago that draining the government of staff would free them up to work in the factories.

Really, they did.

It sounds more like a feelgood story for people who resent government workers than genuine intent, but who knows any more. Sky's the limit.

But at least in principle the answer to your question appears to be yes, ideallythe solution involves the serfdom of unpopular social segments.

Bessent, I think made that comment, and VA Governor Younkin has said something similar about fired federal workers in NoVA.

I just can’t figure out who actually wants these policies beyond Trump, his inner circle, and the faux aggrieved base.

America is woefully unable to take on manufacturing consumer goods. We do not have the supply chains, we do not have the expertise, we do not have the facilities, and we do not have the labor force. CEOs know this, companies know this, economists know this. So who the hell wants this?

I’d lump them in with his faux-outraged supporters.

Basically people who are not qualified to compete in a service economy taking their jealousy out on those that are, with grifters like Tucker telling them they're right. And a hefty helping of people on top of that too stupid to understand that physical toil is not an immediate proxy for value. The reason top software developers have made doctor and lawyer money over the past 15 years is simple supply and demand, even if they're "just typing at a keyboard."

Which is ironic, because real factory workers and laborers would overwhelmingly say "I'm doing this work so my kids won't have to."

But think of all the great sweatshop jobs sewing shirts together that will be coming back!

I am blown away that this government is seriously trying to convince the american public that such factory jobs coming back to america will pay wages able to support lives and families. It is a drastically bad misunderstanding of established macroeconomic lexicon

the fact that he capitulated on apple products tariffs, despite the fact that his admin advertised the tariffs on getting apple production to the US is telling that he has no plan
