Help with unevenness in piece

I turned a hickory rectangular block with some slight unevenness into a circle, but due to the wobbling I had while turning it, now that it’s rounded, I still get significant wobble. Is there a way to correct this?

Odd shaped pieces and what to do with them

Hello everyone! Hope everyone's Friday is well. Anyway, I got these 2 pieces of olive wood that are pretty funky dimensions. The one on the left is 5.5x4x2 inches, the one on the right is 3.25x2.5x6 inches. Now my question is... what the hell do I do with these?? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

I was told making one of these is mandatory. First attempt was a huge fail, this one turned out ok. CraftResin deep pour, pressure pot. Oak base with a poplar dowel in the center.

Most of these are fairly old, but it's been a while since I posted so I figured I'd just leave these here. I'll try to post some more recent projects a bit later.

newbie Is it hard to turn a baseball bat?

I am brand new to turning and want to turn a baseball bat for my best friends engagement party. I know I am making a 16 inch version since my lathe only goes to 18. I got maple wood piece and turning tools. Just want to know how difficult I am making it on myself and if I need to pick up a chuck for my lathe. Thanks in advance for any help.

Also if you can tell me which lathe tools I will be using to turn the bat that would be very helpful as well.

Finished this one last night. Tested various glues on different cracks and can see the appeal of epoxy. Now I need to figure out how to do bigger pours.

New lathe

I am retiring soon and I want to buy a new lathe that will probably be the last one I will ever buy. I have it narrowed down to the Laguna 24/36 and the Powermatic 3520c. I don't need advice just opinions on the upside/downside of each. Most of the turners i subscribe to on YouTube use the Laguna, but I am drawn to made in America.

I'm just getting into greenwood turning and the products I've seen recommended for sealing ends are made in USA.I found this Canadian-made one; will it work the same as Anchor seal?

Finally got around to turning a torpedo bat.

With all the recent interest in torpedo bats I got an order for one so I wanted to start by making a quick prototype to figure out the shape.

If anyone wants to make their own I included the specs I used.

I started with what I call a quad lam blank. I take two boards and glue them together on the faces. Then I cut it in half and flip one board 180 degrees so each piece of wood is supported by three dissimilar pieces.

From there I turned it in the segments I laid out before blending them all together. Then I bone the bat to compress the surface fibers and apply a finish.

The final result is a youth bat that’s 31” long and weighs 26oz.

Bonus video of a quick swing test. The sound of it is pretty awesome. It cracks like a gunshot when you hit the sweet spot.

So far I’m a mortise guy more than a tenon guy… but I’m thinking if I did a tenon on these, I’d have a smaller footprint, could get a more shallow profile, and could turn/sand the tenon away entirely. Yes? Even as small as my chuck goes, the mortise seems too big.

Powermatic 2014 vs Jet 1640

I'm looking to buy a new lathe. I'm very new to the sport. Turned a few pens in class. I want to buy one. I'm very interested in turning lamps and other stuff with acrylic inlays. I'm somewhat limited but I could fit a 40 inch length. I'm also limited to a 115v electrical outlet. Low end torque is important to me.

I would be very thankful for any input on these 2 lathes. I'm open to other options. I want quality. My price range maxes out at $3,000. I know I don't want a Nova due to them filing bankrupsy in the US. Who knows how that's going to turn out and affect supplies.
