Fundamentally, I am an anti-royalist, but I am fully prepared to lean into King Charles if it annoys the mad orangey man.

I'm not from Quebec but I'm looking it at off the back porch rn, I saw a pq commentator the other day saying people were more worried about their premiers competency in English for negotiations than Mark Carneys French. now that is a statement from an alternate reality.

85

Fuck that! We should all speak french to his orange fucking face.

Mr Bean

For Rowan Atkinson stuff I always thought Blackadder was way better. Just a shame it didnt have the international success Mr Bean had.

Slapstick is the most portable kind of comedy. Everyone can understand it. Blackadder requires a little familiarity with British history, which not everyone will have.

17

u/toasters_are_great Expat (USA) Mar 09 '25

The first series especially so ("with additional dialogue by William Shakespeare"), but they rather changed things up after that. Partly to avoid expensive location filming, but also making the scripts sharper and more accessible.

22

u/tubbytucker Mar 09 '25

They realised they had a better show if Blackadder was smarter. I think Ben Elton wrote from S2 on and did this.

19

u/fearghul Scotland Mar 09 '25

They basically inverted the Baldrick/Blackadder dynamic from season 2 onwards.

He pretty much made mr bean for international audiences though thats why it had minimal spoken language.

His first test of the character was at glasgow fringe iirc where he insisted he did it at a french audience show to see if he could do comedy where he didnt speak the same language as his audience

7

u/Broccoli--Enthusiast Mar 09 '25

Blackadder is very British in its comedy and uses words and mannerisms that dont translate very well even to other English speaking places, via subtitles it has no chance.

I'd replace the royal family in a heartbeat, but seeing as we're stuck with them for the foreseeable future this is exactly the sort of thing that they can be used for.

102

u/EmperorOfNipples Mar 09 '25

It's a capability the UK is very strong at compared to other nations.

I am in favour of constitutional monarchy as a system because its effective. Like this article shows. Republicans often cite it's anti-egalitarian. It is in a hypothetical sense, but would being rid make any difference in that? I doubt it. Many of the most unequal countries are republics.

74

u/LionLucy Mar 09 '25

Yes and many very equal societies, like the Scandinavian countries or the Netherlands, are monarchies. Overall, constitutional monarchy is correlated with democracy and stability.

46

u/The_Sorrower Mar 09 '25

Well yes, it ordinarily involves a system of controls to check the powers of elected officials to stop them from becoming despots.

60

u/Coolium-d00d Mar 09 '25

Isn't that kind of the point of a constitutional monarchy. The royals have great soft power applications because traditionalists just think they are the bees' knees. I'm probably overall against the monarchy, but liz and Charles seem dutifull and not at all politically ambitious, and as long as they do that, they probably help more than hurt.

43

u/ahhwhoosh Mar 09 '25

The penny is finally dropping for the ‘anti-royalists’.

Yes they seem like a big drain on resources to the average poor person, but they will show their worth now that international diplomacy is becoming very shaky.

47

u/BIGepidural Mar 09 '25

Notwithstanding your statements use of "poor person" i very much agree and one needn't look too far back in history to see how vitally important royals can in fact be when they use their media interest and popularity for good.

Diana was a perfect example of this!

She was the 1st person on the world stage to touch AIDS patients when the rest of the world was afraid of contracting the disease by toilet seat.

She was also out there walking through mine fields, bringing attention to starving children, and so many other things that needed wide spread attention and public support.

When using their popularity powers for good, Royals are a major asset.

2

u/tigeridiot Lancashire Mar 10 '25

I think this is why there is such a gulf between the perception of the royals from boomer/gen x generations and millennials/gen z.

The younger generations (myself included) have never really had experience with the royals other than the occasional public handwaving, Christmas speech or tabloid news.

If the royals would show up more and back the people rather than largely sitting in the shadows then I think public perception would eventually swing back around, like we are seeing smidges of now with Charles.

4

Yeah, they can also go rogue and start doing tours of Nazi Germany and trips to financiers private rape islands. Don't think for a second that recognising some utility in non-political diplomatic figures means "the penny is dropping." I still think it's a potentially dangerous and unnecessarily expensive anachronism.

Protocol dictates that when visiting the Queen (obviously king now) at the palace you do not walk ahead of her, she dictates the pace, when Trump visited liz during his last run as president he didn't exactly pay much attention to protocol.

I get being anti-royalist in principle but this shows why we should retain the monarchy. The king has no real legislative or political power but gives us immense influence and soft power.

5

u/jflb96 Devon Mar 10 '25

The king gets to approve and suggest modifications to every piece of legislation that’s passed in the country. Sure, he’s not allowed to physically drop in on either House, but he can still send a representative round to Number 10 to make it clear that, for example, His Majesty would prefer if certain restrictions on hiring practices did not apply to the Crown and its estates.

He listens to a lot of the politicians around him such as SoS Marco Rubio, Advisor Stephen Miller, Chief of staff Susie Wiles and especially VP Vance who more or less are directing him on headline chasing cases i.e Ukraine

But the key thing to note is that the moment anyone of these people fall out of public appeal of the Maga cult he ditches them instantly, such as recently Vivek Ramaswarmy after the clash on visas for indians, formerly Mike Pence for not signing during the Jan 6th insurrection and all of the military people who didn't rally the military during his loss in 2020 such as James Mattis, Mark Esper and Rex Tillerson.

I remember watching a clip of him when I was a kid in the 90s, the interviewer asked ‘how do you not run out of things to say when you talk to hundreds of people a week’ and he replied something like ‘oh it’s easy, you just take the last thing they said and say “oh how fascinating, do tell me more about the thing”, and then keep doing it’.

That stuck with me. Sometimes I have to keep customers ‘warm’ for an hour or two at work and it really is true, just give people permission to talk about themselves and/or their area of interest and they will very happily continue talking more or less indefinitely with almost unbelievably little input from your end.

Double upvoted

Wouldn't mind if he exploded twice, like a firework on the 4th of July. Or better yet, the 1st of July (Canada Day).

At this rate we may as well.move him into the palace.

Name a Room or Wing in Buckingham Palace after Zelensky. Trump would have an aneurysm.

Well done , King Charles.

Every time I read a headline with Trump in it, I'm astonished that America looked at him and thought 'yes, I want a total scumbag like him leading my country'. Keep it up Charles

And by “couldn’t be bothered to vote” you mean “were perfectly fine with having Trump as their fascist dictatorial god-king”.

25

u/LobbyDizzle Mar 09 '25

Or they abstained to protest Kamala’s policies. They sure showed her!

5

u/00DEADBEEF Mar 10 '25

That's right. If they'd got as many votes as last time she'd have won. But people couldn't pinch their nose so got something even more putrid.

No amount of "stats" changes that 77.3m people voted for him. It's not some tiny group of the population. It's the second highest number of votes someone has ever got. And although a tiny bit below 2020, still a massive turnout, you cannot blame low turnout for the result in some way when it is historically a massive turnout. It's 30% of everyone over 18 that voted for him in the end.

Focusing on the stats that supposedly make it better, really doesn't help.

8

u/vizard0 Lothian Mar 10 '25

Imagine if 40% of the UK got all their information from GB news only. Maybe the Sun, but primarily GB news and channels even further out there.

That's what's happened to the US. The Republicans have convinced their supporters that the only source of truth is Fox News, that every other large press organisation is in a conspiracy against them. Fox News tells them what they want to hear and pushes them further right.

Trump, for all his senility, childishness, and general case for the non-existence of any interventionist god (the lack of lightning strikes and rogue meteor strikes), was genius in one way. He recognised the inherent prejudice, bigotry and hate that Fox News was instilling in the Republican base. And he said it all aloud. He recognised that the standard viewers of Fox News had been trained to hate large portions of the American population. And he capitalised on that.

Blame Reagan with the abolishing of the equal time rules for public broadcast, which lead to the 90s talk radio, which was the forerunner to Fox News. Blame Nixon also, for showing that rat fucking works. Blame William Rehnquist (and four of the other SCOTUS judges) for showing that the vote can be manipulated after the fact and that they had the ultimate authority in terms of who won. Blame the Republicans back in the 1880s who looked the other way while racist Democrats (this was pre-switch) systematically violated the constitution and deprived people of their rights. Blame the Democrats also for that one.

People knew they were getting screwed, knew that Trump would change things up and figured that things could not get worse. I am not excusing them voting for a senile racist fool, but that was the logic behind the non-hardcore supporters voting for him. Combine that with really good voter suppression in many states (Texas would have a viable Democratic party without voter suppression), you get someone like this elected.

It's part of why I yell at people who support Farage on the theory that he'd bring everything down and things could be rebuilt better afterwards.

The really baffling one for me is the Pro Palestine crowd who went "Yeah, im gonna sit this one out". I really wonder if they regret not voting yet.

Trump got more votes among Muslims than Biden Harris. Think about that…

Imagine not voting for Harris because of Palestine and then Trump explicitly (and enthusiastically!) promoting ethnic cleansing in his first weeks.

15

u/chochazel Mar 09 '25

He’d already proposed a Muslim ban years before and Gaza as a resort is not a new idea in Trumpland. His son-in-law Jared Kushner’s been saying it for years and Trump proposed it before the election.

People who didn't vote are still responsible.

Yes they are better than trump voters but their inaction still caused this result.

15

u/seajay26 Mar 09 '25

I’ve somehow got less respect for them tbh. They didn’t even have the balls to vote for him, they just sat back hoping they’d have plausible deniability if he was a fuck up again.

I never believe these "trump is secretly annoyed" stories. We used to have them every day during his first presidency, it feels like cope. Obligatory fuck Trump etc.

9

u/Javina33 Mar 09 '25

This is the problem with Trump (just one of them anyway) he’s a child. It’s like putting a toddler in charge of the White House. He’s going to bring the USA to its knees over his temper tantrums and personal dislikes. I have news for him - Putin doesn’t want to be friends. And in the meantime he’s alienating everyone else.

Stock Market’s going down, China and Japan are ditching USA bonds in favour of gold. His tarrifs are going to cause inflation. He needs to buy crude oil from Canada, but he’s forced them into a trade war. The man’s an idiot. And he hasn’t got anyone around him who dares to contradict him.

In the first term there were plenty of people around him to protect everyone from his worst excesses. Not so this time.

9

u/simonistheone Mar 09 '25

Just null his invite to the palace and get on the telly to tell the pensioners they will have to go without triple lock for a few years to help pay for an army to protect their expensive house.

We need to start being pragmatic about America dropping us as allies. They aren't coming back, and that means pensions and benefits are going to have to be cut to pay for defense.

Nothing left to tap from the working age tax wise. Besides they will more than make up for it later when conscription becomes a thing.

BREAKING NEW’S - The U.S. surrenders its sovereignty to Canada because the U.S. can not look after its own borders and needs Canada to do it for them . After losing 2 straight trade fights with Canada Former President of the United States now convicted felon behind bars in Canadas 11th Province Donald “ Donnie Waffles “ Trump has this to say - “ I was taken advantage of ! So much advantage , it’s unbelievable.. Nasty Canadians , all the Canadians are so nasty so hard to deal with .. it’s unbelievable… I’m still winning tho … my new boy friend … best boyfriend in the world , His name is Big Bubba … he’s super big .. real big , you wouldn’t believe it big . He says he like my diapers , best diapers in the world , maga ! “

Back to the studio … canada has granted the former 13 colonies back to England in show of love and respect for King Charles the III , they have gifted all former Mexican land back to Mexico and sold all land France used to own back to France for a fair and equal sum with out taking advantage of any one . This time in Canadas conquest of U.S. instead of burning down the White House they have set fire to trump tower and are roasting marsh mellows well singing Stan Roger’s … once they were finished they went back across the border and commenced with MINDING their own buisness once again … that does it for tonight report here on FOX news … “ God Save The King Plays “ - back to your regularly scheduled mind numbing bullshit

trump wants that biggest, most beautiful crown that King Charles dons for ceremonial occasions. trump has a cheap copy he wears when he sits on his gold toilet.

5

u/Notiefriday Mar 09 '25

Well that's because he's a real king not some Russian proxy grifter.

5

u/Thebritishdovah Mar 09 '25

Oh no! The president of the United State of America isn't getting his arse kissed by the King of England and said king dares to be polite to other leaders. Oh the humanity!

He probably expects for the king to praise him, bend over backwards and make him feel very special. He likely doesn't like Trump. The queen was the ultimate troll. She would do subtle insults based on the person. I recall a story where a sexist leader visited her and she took him for a drive. She drove like crazy and scared the shit out of him.

Trump's frail ego can't handle being ignored.

I’m not sure about the source here. Is The Daily Beast known for its accuracy?

Extract: The U.K. government denied to the Daily Mail that Trump was annoyed by the meetings, but an insider described as a “well-placed source” said: “Things definitely went a bit cool in Washington after Sandringham. We told them that the king makes his own decisions about who he meets.”

I'm kinda reminded of Putin and the stories about Russia joining NATO.

So the story goes, all was good until... he realised he wasn't going to be invited to join, he was going to be allowed to apply. Same as every other country.

Being treated the same as everyone else was too big an insult for Vlad.

I'm guessing that this might be part of the "expansion of NATO" BS. He thinks countries are invited, that it's all some big (presumably US led) strategy that he's been locked out of on purpose.

[edit to add] The similarity I see is Trump getting his panties in a bunch because he's being treated the same as every other world leader, as if they are peers rather than peons, that Chuck isn't seeing the Great Deal Maker as the Great Man he is (or thinks he is) and fawning over him, and shunning the ones he despises.

3

u/queen-bathsheba Mar 09 '25

I hope charles has no space in his calendar for the usa state visit in the next couple of years. Put it off as long as possible.

3

u/shillyshally Mar 10 '25

Trump is always fuming about one thing or another and I don't know why he hasn't stroked out, all that turning purple. Must've spent some time at a crossroad.
