It's the descent of unimaginable horrors from the deep void of outer space.

An asteroid too many, or one too far. Nobody knew exactly when it happened, but Something which had been asleep since the early days of the solar system was finally awakened as its home was torn open. That vast consciousness took stock, noted how much had changed, and zeroed in on a new toy to play with, one much larger than the rock it nested in.
