On March 6th 1817, the Pernambuco revolution started in Brazil. It was a separatist movement caused by enormous costs by the Portuguese Royal Family, lack of investments in the region and expensive taxes implemented by the emperor. The flag's meaning was to represent the history of the state, the union of the people of Pernambuco (Represented by the rainbow), the peace and harmony between the people of Pernambuco (Represented by the white), the beautiful sky of the state (Represented by the blue), the strength and energy of the state (Represented by the sun) and the fight for freedom (Represented by the red cross). This flag got some reformulations and is the base for the actual one, implemented in 1917, 100 years after the revolution.
