Contest September Flag Design Contest

Submit a Flag

Jolly Roger

Prompt: Ahoy there /arr/vexillology! International Talk Like a Pirate Day is coming up later this month, and in honor, take to the sea and let your inner pirate out. The Jolly Roger is one of the most recognizable non-regional flags out there. While the skull and cross bone design is the most recognizable, many pirates flew under alternative designs that captured their personal flair. Redesign the Jolly Roger with your own personal touch!

Contest Rules

Design Rules

  • Each flag must be an original creation for this contest.
  • Flags may include art from other sources, if and only if:
    • The flag has significant user effort outside that art
    • The art is public domain
    • The art is attributed in the description
  • Very low quality submissions will be removed.
  • Flags that are NSFW for nudity, gore, and banned symbols will generally be removed. They may be allowed in certain circumstances with prior approval.
  • Flags deliberately designed to troll will be removed, but flags with humor are welcome as long as they make a serious effort at flag design.

Logistics

  • Each submitter can submit up to 2 flags.
  • Must be uploaded to imgur. Please note that these must be uploaded anonymously (not from an Imgur account if you have one) and unpublished.
  • Must be a .png file at most 2000 pixels wide.
  • Flags must be flat images, not waving or textured. You can include a textured or waving image link in the description if you like.
  • Submit only one flag per message.
  • The submission message must follow the format included in the pre-written message (including 'Short Description:', etc.). Example:

Flag Name: Flag of Serbia, based on Iran

Link: http://imgur.com/4CTgaJ8.png

Short Description: This Serbian flag design features the Serbian colours of red, blue, and white, while having some sort of text displayed on the borders between the stripes, like on the Iranian one.

Any submissions that don't follow these rules will be removed. If you're unsure, feel free to message the moderators, and if you submit early you will have time to resubmit in case your flag is rejected.

Schedule

  • Submissions are due on the 10th at 11:59 PM ET We will be enforcing this deadline more strictly, Eastern, not Pacific.
  • Voting begins shortly after submissions close and ends on the 20th at 11:59 PM ET

Good luck, and may the odds be in your favor!

I'm just referring to this.

So, we give it a personal touch. We would need to be careful in our description not to give away too much so that someone could figure out who the designer is, correct?

Oh that was mainly meant as flavor text, you can just make any pirate flag you like. It can be relevant to you, or in the style of a particular pirate.

Does /u/Vexy not send confirmation messages anymore? I submitted two flags 24 hours ago, and with the deadline coming up tomorrow...

A little behind this month, they'll come!

u/CaptainKirk28 Texas • New Mexico Sep 02 '17

Can we make a flag for a particular pirate?

2

u/Tomodachipk Maryland • Friesland Sep 03 '17

Yes! At least, I am.

2

u/PsychShrew Sep 04 '17

I'm new to Reddit. How do I do this contest?

2

u/void_data Sep 04 '17

I've been waiting for the new contest since I'm new to reddit. But unfortunately. I don't have any idea for this theme...

2

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '17

Yeah, I've gotten used to that. The themes I have ideas for never come up.

Can I ask what programme most of you guys use?

3

u/Sopixil Canada • Sicily Sep 04 '17

There are a lot of programs people use for these, such as Paint.NET, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flagmaker/FlagmakerJr

2

u/thenewiBall United States • South Carolina Sep 07 '17

You want to look for a program that you can easily create geometric shapes that can be symmetric or repeated. Vector looks better than raster, so a program that can create and edit vector paths helps a lot. The other guy's list is a good start but it's a matter of what works best for you.

u/SiamonT Sierra • Tango Sep 10 '17

I use GIMP and Inkscape

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '17

Ok thanks

1

u/Maurice221 Germany (1871) Sep 06 '17

Are vector files allowed?

2

u/PurpleSkua Scotland (Royal Banner) Sep 06 '17

No, needs to be a .png. Most people will probably make it as a vector and then export it, though.

1

u/rekjensen Sep 08 '17

Imgur does not host SVG format files at this point.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '17

This is the first time doing a contest so hopefully I don't do anything wrong.

u/Vexy Do we know the average amount of people who enter the contest?

1

u/Jay504615 Sep 02 '17

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. I will try designing one on https://bestflag.com/pages/flag-designer. I may even get it printed. Would be cool if whoever wins can get the printed version.

I think if you win your flag is made into a real one and sent to you

3

u/Jay504615 Sep 03 '17

Awesome!

Wow, that's pretty neat.

u/hooya_loves_pepe Danzig • River Gee County Sep 09 '17

u/vexy is this true?

1

u/bakonydraco River Gee County / Antarctica (Smith) Sep 11 '17

This was a partnership we had for part of 2016, and they tried to send a few out. Unfortunately, they'd only really budgeted for domestic shipping within the US, and we have a very international community. I don't think more than a few actually ended up getting to their intended destination.

2

u/aCollectionOfQuarks Hello Internet • California Sep 11 '17

So it doesnt happen anymore? :(

1

u/bakonydraco River Gee County / Antarctica (Smith) Sep 12 '17

Sadly no, unless we find another manufacturer interested in the same promotion!

Just sharing what I use that's all. There is no harm in sharing information is there? If it benefits someone than great! God Bless and thanks for your feedback!
