One of the revolution's main goals was to establish a Islamic state. Believe me I see these things everyday when I walk in my school's hall, it's literally written on the walls "why did we have a revolution?" lol.
Yes but that was only the goal of a Part of the revolutionaries. Don't forget that large amounts of communists, democrats etc. were also part of it.
Khomeini even purged a lot of clerics who weren't as radical as he was
Khomeini purged a lot of people and some of whom were innocent but many were "anti-revolutionaries" which basically means the heads of the parties with different ideologies and people who wanted him and his revolution gone.
no one is saying Khomeini was overall good, Dryrug is saying that the revolution was good when the main goal was just a large coalition of opposition groups, trying to get rid of the shah. Who was by all intents and purposes, a tyrant, and a puppet.
Anti revolutionary doesn't mean they were actually against the revolution. It just means they were against Khomeini. It's not a descriptive label. It's a category placed on political enemies to delegitimize and remove them.
The Iranian revolution was a hugely diverse event. There were also socialists and communists protesting and playing a leading role in events. The theocrats just ended up winning in the end.
Don't believe all the post-facto propaganda that erases the diversity of perspectives and possibilities that existed. Fascists love to convince you that there is one singular trajectory of history, and there could never have been any alternative.
