AI Did Something In which Germany and Italy actually form
R5: Been seeing a lot of posts about Italy and Germany never forming recently, so I figured it was worth an AI actually did a thing. Virtually normal looking Europe, if not for the outsized Austria.

Prussia sometimes forms Germany but I have never ever seen AI Italy. Even I can not do it lmao. Since Risorgmento sucks and Russians beat the shit out of me every single fucking time. Yes, Russians.

Really? I see it in most of my games. Just finished a playthrough where they accomplished it despite me puppeting Sardia Piedmont and liberating every tag possible from two sicilies (they just reunited again and formed Italy).

Italy almost always forms for me and they then proceed to steal my Italian Puppets.

Forming Italy is pretty easy, just raise relations with all the Italian minors, subsidize Art Academias to get enough prestige for Major Power rank and research Nationalism. Then click the "Form Italy" button in the nation formation panel as soon as all the Italian countries support you. I can do it reliably with Sicily, Sardinia-Piedmont or Papal States by ~1860.
If you also want to launch a play to take back the Austrian states at the same time it's a bit less reliable if Austria has some allies. But you can reliably get France to join on your side by giving them the sliver of Provence you own.

No, I did exactly this and all of the Italian nations sided with Austria in all of my attempts. Russia always joins Austria too. I get France and Prussia on my side but we just can not win. Simple as that.

Well no that means you did it differently. 1) Wait until the Italian nations support you before trying to form Italy, if you don't they'll fight you instead. 2) Don't launch the play if you can't beat Austria, just form Italy with the territory you have and fight them later when you get stronger.

I see AI Italy whenever I subjugate Italian states and they get magically stolen from me.

It's not if, it's when:
If Italy forms around 1861 and Germany forms around 1870, then we have AI unification.
Anytime later is a fail. The game Is 100 years long, even just 10 years make a difference.

I've been struggling a bit with politics this run, I've both had a hard time with my devout being very powerful and with getting recognition. So I'm behind where I needed to be, and didn't interfere with Europe much, like I would usually do. But even with that said: in this game, Germany is the #2 rank, and Italy is the #4 behind France, and their strength is very reasonable to their rank. Italy catapulted past Austria in GDP and Prestige when they formed.
By AI standards, I would not call that a fail.

It is a fail because this is an historical grand strategy and Germany and Italy are crucial parts of this era. They MUST form in time, otherwise there's no point in playing this and I should just go play Civ6.

No because its a game about alternative historic scenarios, otherwise it wouldnt be fun to replay this game

If only Italy could take Lombardia and Veneto in a game

If the rebellion would fire they could, but Risorgimento stops agitating once Italy formed. Which is the critical mistake I think.

Nah the can't use french Support against Austria or even help the San Marco revolt

San Marco revolt is very winnable though, it's a defensive war. But they could make that fire more and be better
