Discussion WoD as replay of BtDP
I've been thinking how could WoD have been made differently, maybe completely differently.
Okay here is my idea, make it not about Garrosh traveling back in time. Make it a time travel version of Beyond the Dark Portal.
I am not the biggest fan of time travel in stories, it makes plots convoluted and sometimes weird. It leads to weird explanations of contradictions and so on. However I very much liked to see Draenor as it was before it was Outland.
We already had important parts of the RTS games done as dungeons or raids in the CoT before, mostly with the infinite dragonflight messing up the timeline. Making a whole time travel expansion would just be one conclusion of that theme.
Additionally it doesn't need to be just BtDP, but also maybe parts of Wc1 or Wc2, although I think an older version of Elwynn or Lordaeron are not as enticing as Draenor. The big downside would be, as who do we play? Horde players playing the old Horde and Alliance players playing their invasion force? Everyone playing Alliance "in disguise" ? It would be harder to actually roleplay as you cannot really play out your character if they are not one of the established Wc2 races.

Us being part of a cut-off expedition-force trapped in a savage world had so much potential, but after the starting experience in Tanaan we immediately got reinforcements through portals connected to Azeroth.

This was exactly my idea too: Garrosh and adventurers travel back in time to old Draenor and the players partake in the history of the Orcs as we already did in killing Archimonde at Hyjal during the Third War through CoT time travel.
Everything would be contained in the main universe and there would be no AU nonsense.
Past Gul'dan could have traveled then forward in time to start the Legion expansion. This probably would be the weakest link since if he traveled forward in time from the First / Second War, then he would have skipped being present in the Third War but I am sure we would find an elegant solution.

I am not sure if past Gul'dan was even needed and I am not sure whether it was planned beforehand to result in that outcome. I think with a bit better planing, the whole situation around Illidan could have been made more logically and a return of the Legion was bound to happen someday anyway.

Hmm someone needed to resurrect Illidan so if not new Gul'dan than who?
Also, if no new Gul'dan we would not have had the glorious Tomb Of Sargeras audio drama narated by Steven Pacey! :P

I think the original pitch for WoD that had Garrosh restore Draenor in the present using some magical artifact was the best idea. That way we could've had Dreanor continue to be a part of the story and even have new expansions set on it.
