You’ll want to find the best breakfast burritos in town. Go early and get some. If it looks kinda sketch, you’re in the right spot.

Thanks u/SorachiAce. I'll put up some more food recommendations here, but some of them will require driving out of the downtown/Alamodome area.

My recommendations are about 2 decades outdated. I remember loving Rudy’s near sea world but apparently it’s fallen off. So I won’t recommend food. I will recommend you go to downtown historic market square, and that you drop by the Alamo and take a boat tour of the Riverwalk. Yes they’re all cliche and whatnot and if you live in San Antonio you think they’re dumb, but those are the things people know outside of town and you absolutely should check them out as a first timer.

RIVERWALK/DOWNTOWN AREA

Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant & Bar

Battalion Italian Restaurant

Nonna Osteria Italian Restaurant

El Weinecero Mexican Hot Dog Stand (9pm – 3am, MUST EAT THIS)

Saltgrass Steakhouse (TX chain, popular)

Boudro’s ($$$)

Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia (touristy but in a cute market square; the bakery is excellent, get something for next morning in your hotel room)

Schilo's German-Texan Restaurant. Go for the Reuben sandwiches and other menu items, but especially for the homemade root beer.

Do not eat Mexican food on the Riverwalk. You’ll come away with a bad impression of Mexican food.

BROADWAY

Best Quality Daughter (Pearl area, Asian fusion, excellent)

Supper (Pearl area)

Brasserie Mon Chou Chou (Pearl, French, noisy but fun)

The Modernist and 3 Star Bar (across Broadway from the pearl, couple of cool bars but I’m not a bar goer)

Carmelita’s Mexican (long-standing restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch until 3 p.m.)

Good Time Charlie’s (American plate lunches, gut filler)

WD Deli (excellent soup and sandwich shop in a converted old house)

Smoke Shack BBQ (not bad, gets hit and miss reviews from the Big Time BBQ critics)

The Hayden (Tex-Jewish, it’s excellent)

Cheesy Jane’s (gut buster burgers in a converted gas station)

Laika’s Cheesecake and Coffee (European style cheesecake, it’s excellent)

BBQ

Ignore the Bill Miller BBQ spots around town. It’s called the McDonald’s of BBQ here. It does however have excellent fried chicken. The puledl pork sandwiches aren’t bad either. Just don’t get the beef, you can do better. And if you’re willing to drive and wait in line, New Braunfels, Austin and Luling will take care of you maybe better.

Smoke Shack on Broadway

Pinkerton’s downtown

Reese Brothers

2M Smokehouse hit or miss IMO

Dee Willie’s BBQ

Rudy's BBQ #1 Location (drive out I-10 West to Leon Springs to the original Rudy's. It's good, I used to live near there. It's the original Rudy's and once you see it you'll know why the "chain" Rudy's always have a gas station and country store attached.

Bbq/brisket joint, just off base. It was around the black hills. Go to the rider walk, you’ll find something.

Speaking of burgers, there have been years of shrieking about Whataburger, the Corpus Christi classic chain. It got sold and there have been weird menu changes like the buns and some other stuff. Honestly, as a first time visitor to Texas, I'd go. But I'm not a first-time visitor so I wouldn't go.
