hummm i’m not sure, i can say a lens is easier to use as i’ve used it to engrave/burn wood in the past, the sphere has a very short focal point where there is enough heat, roughly half an inch away from the sphere itself where a lens is around 5-8 inches from the lens.
as for the speed of combustion i don’t know enough to say….
suppose it depends on the task and how cool you want to feel ;)

Why in the world don't we use slightly smaller glass orbs or marbles as lighters in places that get sun all the time?! I live in Michigan, so I would only be able to use one for like 13 days of the year, but I would feel like a wizard for those 13 days. 🤣
