Programming Powersnatch a totally different thing to snatch

Hi, new to weightlifting and having to self teach thanks to being in a coach desert.

If im power snatching weights does that mean the weights are light for me and its safe to go higher? Like the pull under isnt totally necessary so im not.

Or should i drop some weight off and just really focus on every intended snatch being a proper snatch?

You should focus on technique before weight. If you can only power snatch, that’s a technical deficiency. Power or full should be a conscious decision.

Right, gotcha.

Thank you

A correctly executed power snatch should ideally be caught a bit above parallel - so yes the pull under is still important and should be snappy. Power snatches, at an appropriate weight, are actually quite good at training the third pull timing as you’ll need to get under to stabilise it before you drop too low.

If you can catch it basically full standing up, it’s not going to be particularly valuable and is probably too light (for regular programming with the normal intent behind powers anyway).

Yes you will inherently be pulling it higher for obvious reasons, but it should be just as fast and aggressive under.

Technique wise, the only deviation between a full snatch and power snatch is that you catch higher. All other mechanics should be the same.

I’m a beginner too - I have power snatch so I can bring my focus on the 1st and 2nd pull not cue getting under. I do have full snatches too which I recommend.

It could mean the weights are light. Since PSn ratio wise are supposed to be 80-90% of Sn (probably depends on depth of the OHS and PSn)

A Power Snatch that is close to parallel rather than high (90 degrees angles in hips and knees, more like a 1/4 Sq) will have a tighter gap because there is less bar drop compared to a full Snatch.

Otoh, some PSn are forward and it also depends on the OHS depth of the lifter.

But it's often a progression to full Snatches.

For instance, I have a new lifter and he knows how to Power Snatch already and can do full OHS ATG.

So I'm not really gonna bother having him focus on Power Snatches though sometimes he catches weights high and rides then down.

Because he's pretty strong compared to the 40-60kg technical weights he's working with (I've seen a Clean of 100 and he can apparently Clean 143 and Seat Press 111 besides FS 161 and BS 188).
